MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?

Is MLB intentionally hiding Lamar's pursuit of the HR record? Or just trying to cram ads into every single spot of the ballpark?

The usual look (besides missing the Babe)

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
The Giants should temporarily remove Mays from the leaderboard for the next few days to compensate.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
I think the "ads" side of your conspiracy is probably what is driving this insanity, but to remove Bonds altogether is pretty f-ed up, and the timing is a bit rotten. I hope to see this fixed by the HR derby.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
It's outside the ballpark on the wall near the Mays Gate. Judging from the insane line to get in today lots of people will see it anyway.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
Yeah I figure that most people coming to the park know of the record, but I just find the ad placement interesting. And those line were crazy today. I can't wait to see how they will be tomorrow and Tues when the park is actually at capacity.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
I did notice the signage removed from the brick wall. I almost made a comment on how they seemed to gentrify the ballpark for the All Star events. It's still our house. I guess they wanted to be gracious hosts to the All Star guests.

Re: No, that's always been there
The point is the visual representation of the chase to the home run record isn't hiding since most people go into the ballpark via the Mays Gate and they can see it right there.

Re: No, that's always been there
Maybe they want to hide it from people watching on TV.  More likely it has to do with Diamond Nuts and ads during the All-Star game.

Naturally, Big Boys and Girls Clubs have to use their undue influence to hide the Bonds chase. Typical of those large mega-non-profits!

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
You'd think with the other space available (admittedly, not much left), MLB would have left it alone.

:::shakes head:::

Also, for BaysideBaller: There was an interview with a fan who has been to a couple of the post-9/11 All-Star games, and he said that the wait times to get in (because of the metal detectors) were the worst he's seen. I can't recall if it was on KNBR or printed in the Chronicle, but it was interesting nonetheless.

So for those of you who shelled out your $4,500,000 for your seat in Section 330, better get there early. (nyah).

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
Try the Marina Gate. The line to get into the Mays Gate was around the corner. It was insanity. The Marina Gate is hardly ever crowded anyway, and yesterday we made it through pretty quick.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
It's obvious that someone put out a burn notice on Barry Lamar Bonds.  All he can do now is take whatever odd jobs he can find...until he finds out who put the burn notice on him!!

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
Someone else who loves Burn Notice on this board?! My lucky day!

As yummy as Jeffrey Donovan is in the lead role I have to admit the series would be more entertaining with Barry as the burned spy tooling around San Francisco with Bruce Campbell as his sidekick. With Jeff Kent the mastermind behind the whole plot to remove Barry from the business.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
Is it just me or do the number 421 look different in the two pictures, and also, why do they take a picture from when bonds was at 699, isn't there a more recent photo.  I want to know what it looked like the day before the game, not a year ago.

by saamhr on Jul 9, 2007 12:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
The number looks different because of the angle of the sun.  Check out the shows in the archways.  They're prominent on one phone, not so much on the other.  Just a different time of day.

I'd imagine that the number isn't more recent because it was Bayside who was taking the picture.  Maybe he/she hasn't taken another picture from that perspective recently.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
Yeah I didn't have a chance to find a more recent picture in my collection. I knew I had a picture from the same angle from when Bonds was close to hitting 700, so I just used that picture. I'll see if I have a more recent one. But the only difference is that now the Diamond Walnuts ad is gone. And no photoshopping involved :-). Those are the actual pictures.

And just for the record, I don't believe its a conspiracy. Just an ironic coincidence.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
Well it makes sense if the diamond nuts is there because they may sponsor the giants, but not the futures game, so covering up all that has that on it makes sense to me.  It's a cheap shot if they truly were covering up bonds, and this is coming from someone who can't stand the guy, especially when I see him steal a base and a couple innings later drop  a fly ball (which happens a lot) and then start hobbling around like his hurt knee caused it.  The guy is a selfish player, and unfortunately really really good at the same time, so he will pass this hallowed record with boos galore and I just hope someone flies by him soon so we can forget him forever.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
I call bullshit on this.

He has 5 SBs this year and 1 error.  You telling me the ONE error he has, he did the above?

Take your hate to a dodgers blog.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
yeah he has 1 official error, but that is just because baseball still has that stupid rule that if you don't touch it they call it a base hit.  I wish I could remember the exact date for you but I know he ran when it was beneficial for his stats and then let a ball drop a foot to the left of him like he wanted to lose it in the sun and then absolutely hobbled back to his position acting like its a miracle he can walk.

We can start a new blog on how stupid that base hit rule is, honestly there should be some common sense in rulings if two guys don't call a ball and it drops after 30 seconds in the air, someone or the team should get an error, I'm a pitcher so I'm probably biased.

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
I've been watching Barry's defense as closely as anybody and I feel like I can confidently say that you're actually basing Barry's overall defense this year on a single play that you happened to see that had room for criticism. Remember that time Barry strck out swinging on that pich waaaaaay out of the zone? Yeah, I'm tired of seeing this terrible hitter do crap like that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bonds isn't as fast as he used to be and his first step and last steps can both be pretty wobbly (stopping and starting on no knees can be pretty hard), so there is an amount of balls that fall for singles that would have been outs ten years ago, but he runs the best routes in the league and starts that hobbled first step as soon off the bat as anybody playing the field today (excuse my slight exaggeration), and because of the nature of the fly ball the singles that would have been outs ten years ago account for like, only 5% the balls that go anywhere near left field.

You're talking about a guy who still plays passable defense with an age related fault that nobody can do anything about who now gives up singles at a rate roughly 5% (5, 10, I'm no statistician) greater than he did when he had knees. It's miniscule.

And sure I'm very likely speaking in hyperbole, but whatever extra damage his defense causes to the team is still pretty much statistically negligible when you account for the positive effect his offense still has on the team.

Blah blah blah.

Coming to you by proxy (I adopted: Dave Righetti!)

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
I'll agree that he more than makes up for it on offense (the games he actually plays) and it really has nothing to do with his actual, physical play, it is his selfish wha wha, poor me, attitude that bugs me and that is what I was addressing.  The same way that (though not proven) he supposedly told Ken Griffey back in the day that he was jealous of McGwire and Sosa getting all the attention.  It's all about Barry, always has been always will be.  There's a reason they've never won the series with him (Pitt or SF).

Re: MLB Hiding Bonds HR Record?
I agree that errors are worthless.

However, if you "drop" a ball (and don't dive or anything) you will be consistently awarded an error - hence I looked for his errors.
