Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!

So on the BART ride back home from the Futures Game today, I started a conversation with a woman when she asked me about the Futures Game and the article I was reading about it.  The topic was makeup, how some players have it and some just don't.  She mentioned her son pitches in Arizona, and how he's being scouted by many universities.  She told me a teammate of his has a strong mindset and is unflappable on the mound, then when she saw I was wearing the good ol' orange and black, she said her son's teammate is named Timothy Alderson.  So, I asked her about the guy, and here's a little summary of it:

-He does intend to sign with us.  I remember someone mentioned in an earlier diary that his parents were more keen about him signing than he was, but it sounds like he's stoked to sign.

-His agent will most likely be Alan Nero.

-He is 6'7", but not the 210 lbs. he's listed at.  He's between 230 and 240.

-His fastball sits between 91-95, consistently.

-His delivery is incredibly deceptive, and his curveball is very difficult to pick up, so he gets a lot of swing throughs.

-Very athletic; has hit balls over 400 ft. and plays a good 1B, so his hand-eye coordination is good.

-His brother is 6'10", and Tim is still growing.  It wouldn't surprise her if he hits the 6'10" mark.

-Very low-key, well-grounded and a good kid.  Responds well to pressure.

She had nothing but good things to say about him, it sounds like he's a great kid and he is a solid pitcher.  Given his unorthidox delivery, deception and poise, it wouldn't surprise me if we converted him to closer (seeing as how he throws exclusively out of the stretch to begin with).

I hope that excites some of you, it definitely got me going!

I'm glad to hear he plans to sign!

I hope he does grow to 6'10"+ because then we'd have two Tims with odd deliveries... but one would be 5'10" and the other would be a foot taller... I don't know about anyone else, but I think that would be awesome.

Not a bad report from TIM'S TEAMMATE'S MOTHER on a BART TRAIN. My mom doesn't even know what I do, let alone my colleagues in my field.

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
I never expected anything like that to ever happen.  Seriously, what are the odds of something like this happening, on a BART train no less?!

She was VERY knowledgeable about the scouting process and recruitment.  It sounds like Tim thought he was going to Detroit, because they told him they planned on picking him.  But we got him first!  And he sounds like a solid prospect.  It also sounds like it won't take too long for him to develop either.

What BART train did you take?! All I got was some asshat guy asking me if I really knew how to keep score. Why yes Virginia, that's what I was doing filling out the totals on my scorecards on the ride home.

Pittsburgh/Bay Point, then had to cut the conversation short to transfer at Macarthur.  I left like the last half inning of the celebrity softball game.

So I'm hoping next time I'm on BART I meet someone who's related to Jessica Alba and wants to introduce me to her.  One step at a time!

I was also on the crowded as F Pittsburg/Bay Point train. The asshat guy got off in P Hill. I ride all the way to Pittsburg on game days. I don't know if I could have seen you on the train today!

I was one of the many people standing, wearing the black Giants warmup pullover, hat and blue jeans.  Basically, I blended in with everyone else.

I think Mccoveychronicle people should wear like a flashing light at games so we can spot one another.  Not only do we become aware of another's presence, the flashing lights clear paths in crowds!  Which would have helped for the horrible lines at security . . .

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
I'd like to see the Giants put him in over his head to begin with just to see how he handles the pressure.  That could give us a good indication of whether he is the right kind of guy to be a closer.

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
I hope he gets every chance to succeed as a starter before we think about moving him over to closer. I'm not sure I trust this management team to know how much more valuable a starter is, but they seemed to with Lincecum and they may be gone by then anyway.

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
Actually a top notch closer is about equal in value to a #2 starting pitcher -- and that's without considering the leverage of the situation they pitch in.

Explain.  What is a no 2 starter, worth, exactly?

by zenbitz on Jul 9, 2007 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
Er, I understand the school of thought that the leverage they pitch in makes a closer as valuable as a #2 or #3 starting pitcher (though I don't know that I agree with it because I think closers are used rather poorly) - but I've never heard anybody say that is the case without leverage.

How is 80 innings of work > 180 innings of work, not considering leverage?

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
I mean, I see how that could be the case, but I think that we may have different notions of just how good a #2 starter is vs. just how good a top notch closer is. There'd have to be a pretty hugely significant quality difference in those innings to make up for more than twice the quantity.

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
I'm using VORP as a measure of a pitcher's general value and so far as I know, leverage doesn't play into it.

Since there are 30 teams in baseball, i'd say it's reasonable to call the 30 best starting pitchers #1 pitchers.

In 2006, a reasonably normal year the top 30 pitchers had VORPS from 40 to 80.

By the same logic I think it's fair to call the 31st to 60th best starting pitchers #2 pitchers.  In 2006 these are VORPS from about 25 to 40.

In 2006 there were about 15 relief pitchers with a VORP between 25 to 40.  There are more RPs towards the bottom of this group than the top.  There are still 7 RP's in the upper half.

This is the basis for my statement that a top notch closer is just as valuable as a #2 SP.

Yeah, maybe he could be like Richie Sexson, without, y'know . . .all the strikeouts!

I met Buckethead's girlfriend on a BART train once, and she told me he was working with Axl Rose a year before it became public.

I think that counts as my post for the day.

In the article below, Alderson says he's "split" on whether to go to college of sign -- partly because OSU won the World Series.

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
From what I was told, he has every intention on signing with us.  But it's possible that she hadn't talked to Tim and his family for a while, and things obviously could have changed.

That article is very recent, and I have no idea when it was she had last talked to them.  It could have been that day, for all we know!  But I guess we shouldn't count on anything happening until the contract is actually signed.

On the plus side, if Bumgarner and Alderson opt not to sign, we get the picks after their slot next draft.  So we'd be getting the #11 and the #23-and in a draft that looks to be somewhat filled with future impact hitters, we could benefit from it.

Re: Insider scoop on Tim Alderson!
First, thanks for the scoop!

My thought is that here he is talking to a reporter about this future.  He's clearly negotiating for a larger bonus than usual - $2.0M over the $1.5M slot; for comparision that's as much as Lincecum got last year at 10th overall pick and Alderson is the 22nd overall pick plus Lincecum got more ($200K) than would have been expected, based on what the #8 and #12 picks got - so it would be dumb of him to say that he's probably signing with the Giants, gives him no leverage.

However, OSU won the World Series after he was drafted, so perhaps the cachet of being part of that team appeals to him.  Of course, that will come with its own set of pressures, potentially being the team that breaks the streak.

But, unless he thinks he going to improve his draft slot by around 20 spots, even if he moved up to 10th pick in 3 years, he only gains maybe $500K plus bonus inflation.  Plus Sabean thinks he can make the majors by the time he comes out again for the draft.  I don't see any baseball prospect turning down that much money AND the chance to make the majors by the time they are 20 years old.

Unless, that is, he thinks he's a #1 pick, like Rick Porcello thinks, in which case he would easily pass that up and gain $1-3M by waiting.  I'll bet that Detroit will shovel out the dough for him.

I think he's going to try to wring out as much bonus as he can but not excessively so (else he probably would have signed with Boras).  The Giants have generally been generous with their first round draft picks, paying more on a percentage basis for them relative to what they did for other draft picks, when compared to the bonuses paid after that pick.

So he will probably get around $1.6-1.75M bonus, a slight uptick over what other 22nd picks got (if I remember right) and he will probably sign sometime near the end of July, so that he can play about a month in pro ball this year and get a taste of the pros.
