All-Star Game Activities

Well I usually steer clear when major sporting events come to where I live, but this time I'm dipping my toes in.  I just scored a $15 seat to the Futures game off CraigsList and will be sitting on top of the RF wall.  The schedules were just released for FanFest, which looks only half-entertaining to me, but I am intrigued by the autograph opportunities:

Friday, July 6
Vida Blue, Bob Feller, Rollie Fingers, Bill Laskey, Jeffery Leonard, and Gaylord Perry

Saturday, July 7
Will Clark, Darrell Evans, Rollie Fingers, Dave Kingman, Fred Lynn, Rob Nenn, and Earl Weaver.

Sunday, July 8
Luis Aparicio, Darrell Evans, Bob Feller, Fergie Jenkins, Harmon Killebrew, Dave Kingman, Jeffrey Leonard, Jack McDowell, John Montefusco, Robin Roberts, Earl Weaver

Monday, July 9
Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers, Tony Gwynn, Monte Irvin, Harmon Killebrew, Fred Lynn, Juan Marichal, Kevin Mitchell, Robby Thompson, Matt Williams

Tuesday, July 10
Luis Aparicio, Goose Gossage, Monte Irvin, Fergie Jenkins, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Matt Williams

Monday looks great to me.  Maybe worth taking the day off work.

Full schedule here:

I'm interested in knowing how the autograph scene works at this thing.  I think it's free.  I wonder if these guys come out on a schedule, randomly, or all at once.  Also, I understand that FanFest tickets are for timed entry - do they kick you out at some point?

If anyone goes, please post about it here!  Diary can also be used for any participant (OK, live spectator) reports from All-Star weekend.

Re: All-Star Game Activities
Everything at Fanfest is free (other than merchandise and food stuffs), as long as you have a ticket, which is $22 for adults and $17 for kids. The ticket can only be used for one day, but I'm not sure about the timed entry. I do know that tomorrow night will be limited for some sort of Safeway and Pepsi promotion.

I'll actually be working tomorrow night from 6pm -11 (and some other time) in the Baseball Legends area where you can get autographs from Hall of Famers and/or former Giants. I'll also be wandering around as a fan on Saturday. Which would you rather have: getting an autograph from Will Clark or seeing Natto live in person? Come on, that's the biggest no brainer in the history of baseball.

Fanfest looks like it'll be awesome though. Plenty to see and to do. And there's a really big baseball.

You vastly underestimate the model of commercialism that is Natto and his Mando T's!
Omar Vizquel hates Joey Barton too. He's a wanker, mate!

A $15 ticket for the Futures game?! That's amazing. I might have to look into it.

Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not fascist: SF Dugout

Re: All-Star Game Activities
Yeah, check it out.  I also saw two Field Box seats in 114 (behind the plate) for $45 each.  I must have been slow on the draw though because that guy never got back to me.

Face value for good Futures tix should be no problem.  I'm figuring FanFest tickets are going to be virtually given away this weekend.

If I hadn't made plans with friends who are less than understanding of my sports obsession, I'd go Friday to get an autograph from Perry. Blast.

Futures game
Burlingame native and Indians prospect Chuck Lofgren is on the US squad.  Cool stuff.  I saw him strike out seventeen batters in one game as a 13 year old...and I understand that he throws even harder now.  Them foreign types don't stand a chance.

Report from the Futures Game
The Futures game was a hoot!  I went armed with my printouts from MiLB.com, running down all the prospects, and made it to my second row CF bleacher seats, just to the RF side of the batter's eye.  (Get there early if you're going though... there's metal detectors to clear.  Also new:  An elevated platform on top of the RF concourse for ESPN.)

Well it was great to see all the future stars.  Evan Longoria roped a ball on his first AB that hit the wall about 10 feet in front of me, just over Justin Upton's grasp.  Justin got his revenge with a really hard hit HR to left later.  When Jay Bruce came up the second time, I said to the guy next to me (who was toting a glove) that this might be his best chance to get a ball.  Then Bruce smacked one off the extreme upper left corner of the brick wall, about 30 yards to our left.  Bruce looked good running out that triple, and his arm was decent too.

The Giants prospects looked good... Henry Sosa had a three-up three-down inning, and Bruce Bocock worked a walk after giving up a couple of strikes.

The celebrity softball game was pretty forgettable, so I left after watching both Rollie Fingers and Robb Nen go "deep."  It was nice to see the old Giants out there though.  Matt Williams looks like he could still play.
