Sanchez to DL, Atchison up

Giants placed LHP Jonathan Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 25, with a rib cage strain.

Sanchez hadn't pitched since the series against the Yankees, so he'll be eligible to return right after the break.

Giants purchased the contract of RHP Scott Atchison from Triple-A Fresno.

Atchison, 31, was a nice surprise for the Mariners in the second half of 2004, but he hurt his elbow the next spring and hadn't pitched in the majors since. He's back now after amassing a 2.11 ERA in 42 2/3 innings for Fresno. He'll be tried in middle relief.

I like when they call up somebody from the minors, and then they ruin it by calling up a 31 year old guy.

Relievers don't have to be young to be successful, you never know what you might find.

Atchinson has had a solid season this year in Fresno, I say give him a shot.

Amen. Atchison has struck out 45 batters in 37.1 big league innings, had a great 2006 in AAA and has been lights-out so far this year. Take away his injury-riddled mess of a 2005 and you have an intriguing track record. If he works out, he can make close to the league minimum for a few years before even becoming arbitration eligible. At that point, I wouldn't care much about his age or whether he came up through our system.

Atchison, wow. Good for him. Does this mean Atchison will hang around until Chulk comes back, and Misch will stay until Sanchez is activated? I'd think Misch has more of a future with the Giants than Atchison.

At least it's not his arm, which is what I always worry about wit Sanchez (and every pitcher, but I tend to worry about it with Sanchez as opposed to just being aware of it for most others).

This better be a placeholding move until Chulk is back - if we send down Misch and keep Atchinson I'll shit.

I'm hoping that when both Vinny and Jonathan return, Atchison is sent back to Topeka and Steve Kline is traded to anywhere.

I agree, but four lefties in the bullpen is a bit much, so I wouldn't have a problem if Misch gets sent back down. Maybe Sanchez will be sent down and stretched out once again in anticipation of a Matt Morris trade.
