Giants interested in Ensberg

This from an article in the chronicle this morning.

Trade talk: Barry Axelrod, the agent who represents pitcher Matt Morris, said Monday night he has not heard anything about a possible trade by today's 1 p.m. deadline. Axelrod also represents Sweeney and said general manager Brian Sabean hinted he might try to find Sweeney a spot on a contender. Also, ESPN's Peter Gammons reported the Giants are interested in third baseman Morgan Ensberg, who was designated for assignment by Houston.

Good to see the Giants exploring klesko-like opportunities.  Yes, I know it's Gammons we're talking about...but hey he was right on about the Braves and Texiera.  ;)

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
As long as we don't give up a ton for him, that would be an excellent pickup.
Who dat is? That's just Ortmeier's daddy.

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
Will Carroll said yesterday he couldn't find one team that had any real interest in Ensberg, so our competition should be pretty light.

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
Yeah right.  Why would you go with a guy with a career .367 OBP when you could have Feliz for a couple million more?

by Stoned Slacker on Jul 31, 2007 9:13 AM PDT   0 recs

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
Sabean doesn't believe in OBP anyway. it's all about timely hitting and scrappiness.

I needed a second reading to see the "s" in "scrappiness."

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
We lead the league in scrappiness.  We also lead the league in crapiness.  So, it's a wash.

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
I just listened to Sabes most recent Razor & Mr. T appearance and got quite a chuckle out of Brian claiming that he doesn't no where the idea got started that the Giants aren't friendly to sabremetric analysis.  They have the best numbers crunchers in the business and were at the forefront of statistical analysis way back before it was even the new thing.

Who knew?

Don't forget about Zito either.  Rapidly declining K/9 and rapidly increasing H+BB/Inning.

Let's give the guy 125 Mil!

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
By "number crunchers" he probably meant the shredder that gets rid of all that paper wasted with all those baseball statistics on them.

Of course, a fungible reliever just netted Betemeit from the Dodgers? Whyohwhy don't we get to make trades like that?

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
This is the kind of move we should be waiting - for a minimal investment we get a third baseman who might (I'd say probably will) be better than Pedro Feliz next year and be cheaper.

What is Ensberg's contract status?  Someone here must know.  thanks

No Ensberg after all

The Padres have acquired Morgan Ensberg from the Astros, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

Re: No Ensberg after all
Not sure but that's the proper way to deal for someone who is DFA'd.  You send them a PTBNL or cash.

What do we do?  Send a promising young reliever with a live fastball.

Re: Giants interested in Ensberg
they can have him. If he can't hit in Houston anymore, he certainly won't hit in either SF or San Diego. If we truly are "rebuilding," we should have no interest in players like Ensberg anyway. A smart thing would be to pick up the phone and find out if this trade means that Kouzmanoff is available.

When I was in college, we used to play a drinking game called "Gammons' Buts."  Next time you watch Baseball Tonight, listen for Peter's use of the emphatic  "but" and imagine taking a shot evbery time you hear it. 30 minutes of Baseball Tonight and you're good for the night.
