Mischegas

So Vinnie Chulk is going on the bereavement list for a few days (condolences, Vinnie) and lefty Pat Misch is getting called up to take his place.

I'm moderately excited. Misch was a marginal prospect as a starter, but he's really found himself this year in the Fresno bullpen: 2.03 era, 16bb/62k in 57 innings. And he's a ground-ball machine, with a go/ao ratio of 1.88. Here's hoping Sabean can find a taker for Steve Kline and Misch is up to stay.

Nu?

Re: Mischegas
Yes, I'm very interested in seeing what Misch can do. And I hope he's up to stay sooner rather than later.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Re: Mischegas
I've been verrrry interested in seeing Misch in the show all year. I'll be paying close attention to the kid (and hopefully I'll actually be able to see him play). It should be interesting.

I'm not sure how he projects toward the end of games and the like, but with Hennessey struggling to lock down the closer spot, I welcome any bodies that can possibly compete there for next year.

Coming to you by proxy (I adopted: Dave Righetti!)

Re: Mischegas
No condolences necessary for Vinnie, his father is not dead, just having heart surgery. Pat looked good tonight. I liked the readings he was getting, but then Kline came in and they were showing 91mph, so I doubt they were accurate.

Re: Mischegas
He looked good, but I'll give him time and he'll learn how to pitch like a Giant.
And I get so high, I just can't feel it, in and out my brain, running through my veins.

Re: Mischegas
yep. Somebody mentioned that he's not a true Giant until he walks somebody, but I think he has to give up a walk off homerun before it's official.

Meister holds young Giants to a higher standard.

Yes, a higher, deeper, farther standard.

Starter?
I still see Misch as a starter.  Welcome him to the show in any capacity though.

I'm disappointed I missed Misch pitching tonight.
Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not fascist: SF Dugout

For just pennies a day, you too can make a difference in the life of a Giants player...like Kevin Correia.

Re: Mischegas
Mischugenah! Is Pat perhaps a Mischigander?

Dr. B -- why do you still see him as a starter? He seemed to hit a ceiling in that capacity at Fresno, whereas he's thrived there as a reliever.

Jesse Foppert: Welcome home, my son. And meet your adopted brother, Kelvin Pichardo. He's from the Dominican Republic.

Starter?
I think Professor Pat actually did pretty well as a starter when he got called back to Fresno last year:  4-2, 4.06, 65 IP, 11 BB, 57 K.  An ERA of 4 is pretty decent for a starter in the PCL and look at those periperals. Granted, his numbers are a whole lot better this year, but I was predicting a breakout year as a starter in Fresno for him, so I tend to believe he would have similar success if he started down there.

Misch is a 4 pitch pitcher.  At least before this year, the rap on him was that while all 4 were good pitches, none were "out" pitches.  My argument is that starting would allow him to use his full arsenal.  I think he could be at least as successful as Noah Lowry as a MLB starter.

Re: Starter?
You make a good case. I didn't realize he'd been that good in Fresno last year. Strangely enough, his strikeout rate and walk rate were much better in AAA than in AA. In the bullpen this year, his K rate went way, way up, but he also apparently figured out how to get grounders all the time. That's a great combination.

Re: Starter?

I can't believe we are in full agreement on an issue Doc, but I have always felt Pat , given the opportunity, would be a solid starter. I never understood why he was moved to the bullpen. A typical start in Norwich would be 4 to 6 K's and a whole bunch of GO's. Unless I miss my guess (again). SF fans will enjoy watching him no matter what his role is.

Re: Mischegas
There's too many starters ahead of him though. His path to the majors in this organization is through the bullpen. I look for a Steve Kline deal and a Morris deal that pushes Sanchez into the rotation. That would leave a nice lefty spot for Misch open in the bullpen.

Re: Mischegas
But we're assuming at least one starter is going to be dealt, right? When a spot in the rotation opens up, it comes down to whether the organization thinks Sanchez is best cast as a starter and Misch as a situational lefty, or vice versa.

Personally, I wouldn't want to give up on Sanchez as a starter altogether, but I think he's a lot more likely to be successful in the pen.

Misch's minor-league numbers don't show any consistent difference between how he handles lefties and righties, so he might be miscast in the Steve Kline role.

Re: Mischegas
Excellent point, Evan.  As much as I am excited about Sanchez, when you look at his splits, he gets lit up by RH hitters.  Now, the splits I have access to do not separate out his first stint and his stats since he came back up in early June.  But if his success is coming against LHs and he is getting hit hard by RHs, then managers witll stack their lineups w/ RH hitters and Sanchez could be in for some short nights.
I do think, at the start of the year, the organization had Sanchez above Misch, but I think it should be reversed and Misch (because he has 4 legit MLB pitches) should go into the rotation until Sanchez can get his other pitches under control AND develop better strategies against RH hitters.

Re: Mischegas
I was glad I got to see Misch in Sac town last week.  Mowed down righties and lefties, induced weakly hit balls mostly.  Fluid motion that, with luck, should avoid injury.
None of these lefties is a situational guy--Tasch, Misch, and Sanch all do as well or better against righties usually.  So maybe Misch is the change of pace guy after a flame thrower (Cain, Tim), and Tasch is the hard throwing 8th inning guy if he can stay consistent.
And Kline is just chucking whatever.

Go, Antoan

Re: Mischegas
Kline can still teach the younger guys a thing or two though. Did you see the first pitch he threw to Brandon Phillips in the atbat after the grandslam?? Brandon just reached across the plate against Correia and jacked the pitch over the centerfield fence. Kline knocked him right off of the plate and then got him out. If that was Correia's first pitch that fatal atbat might have been different.

Re: Mischegas
Good point, RX.  Kline gets criticized largely because of his age and because he doesn't have sexy peripherals.  But, other than 2 admittedly ugly outings (one the load the bases, give up a grand slam against Oakland), he has been very reliable.  We should have such reliability from Correia.
You can pretty well rest assured that people who criticize him haven't looked very closely at his numbers - other than his strike out rate.  He has been very consistent over his career, except for his awful year in Baltimore (for which he can be forgiven), which allowed us to sign him relatively cheaply - and a damned nice pickup it was, too.
