from inside HQ...

I've got a mole at 24 Mays Plaza (sorry to be all Machiavellian, but it's someone who can hear what's going on but has no input on decision-making) and he/she hears that Morris is "gone", Durham is "untradeable", and Klesko is available but fetching little interest. Discuss among yourselves...

Re: what's the scoop on "The Albatross"?
Zito??? I didn't ask--but ROFL. Let's see--no one would pay him nearly what we offered before he stunk up the joint for 20 starts. Draw your own conclusions.

On a serious note
Has The Brass considered packaging any of the older players with some minor league talent to see if there is any interest?

Re: from inside HQ...
Durham is untradeable because no other team wants him. He isn't very good, his range on defense has been reduced and he costs too much this year and next.
The Fringe was right.

Re: from inside HQ...
Maybe I'm delusional, but I think Durham still has one more comeback in him. His power surge last year messed him up and he's getting the ball up in the air too much, but he'll get over that. Defensively he's not great, but he's not terrible. If I were the Mets (or, now, the Phillies), I'd want him.

Utley creates more demand
Do not wish him ill but the more demand the better for SF.

Re: from inside HQ...
Durham has an 11% line drive rate.  11%!!  That is unbelievably bad, and completely out of line with his career lines.  He hit fewer fly balls last year, but many more of them went out of the park.

This year?  Tons of fly balls, and none of them are going out.  And he hits ground balls when he misses pitches, so they make their way meekly into fielders' gloves.

I think Durham just needs to fix his approach and he would be just fine.  Not last year good, but more in line with his career numbers.  How the hell does Ray-Ray have an 11% LD rate?  Abysmal.

Re: from inside HQ...
Thats about ONE line drive every 2.5 Games.  That is pitcher territory.

He either needs to go on the DL or be DFA'd. He doesn't play defense very well. He is obscene in the legal meaning, prurient interest only with no socially redeeming value and definitely not up to this community's standards

Is there anybody left in this organization that has any baseball integrity?  Bueller? Anyone?

Maybe all the air out of Bonds' drives (turned into Grounders) went into Durham's.

Re: from inside HQ...
The injury to Chase Utley could possibly open up a market for Ray, especially if he magically got hot between now and the deadline.

by sharksrog on Jul 26, 2007 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: from inside HQ...
Sorry, I think Ray-Ray is injured (abdomen or groin, I forget which) and ain't gonna get hot and ain't gonna get traded.  He should be on the DL not on the field.  Enough of this M Morris style 'toughing it out.'

Re: from inside HQ...
Especially with Fransden getting stuck out of position to get starts bull-malarkey.  With Fransden and Aurilia to play 2nd there is NO reason Durham should play hurt....  If he just sucks (see 11% Line drive disc. above) and needs to fix his approach i guess thats another matter.

Re: from inside HQ...
Sounds reasonable. Although I'd like to see them at least get something Pichardo-esque for Klesko.

You'd think there'd be a buzz
If Lowry was on the block. Morris won't fetch much. It's starting to sound like we'll get one not-too-exciting deal and that's it.

Unfortunate side effect of extending Sabean: his job security allows him to "play it safe" and neither commit to rebuilding nor commit to winning now. Basically, he's committing to Jack $hi+.

Re: You'd think there'd be a buzz
An extension means little when it comes to a GM.  There isn't really any job security there if Magowan and Co are willing to eat his contract, right?

So basically, he has to commit.  He has to commit to "rebuilding while winning" or whatever it was that Magowan was preaching when the extension was signed.

Anyone catcch Sabean on KNBR yesterday?  He basically said he expects August to be more eventful than July because "there's no way most of our guys will be claimed considering what they've done this season."

Nice, Brian.  Nice.

Re: from inside HQ...
I heard that interview. He also indicated that whether they unload any or all of their veterans by July 31, they're planning on playing the kids a lot more often so they can have more time(not just in September)to evaluate the makeup of the team for 2008.

Nothing terribly surprising, but it was heartening to hear him emphasize the team could be classified as "sellers." Now if only there were some buyers out there...

Once that first big SP goes game is on
Other teams will then be looking to upgrade too. This wildcard race is shaping up with about 6 teams within 3.5 games. Should be plenty of demand.

Re: from inside HQ...
I would like to ask Brian why his scouting system didn't pick up on the incompatability between AJ Pierzynski and the Giants, and if he felt he overemphasized Joe Nathan's poor 2003 post-season in comparison to a highly intriguing 2003 regular season in evaluating him for trade.

Maybe how he could have picked up such out-makers as Neifi Perez and Jose Vizcaino (the second time around).  And how much of the $126 million the Giants gave to Zito was based on marketing considerations.

Fun stuff like that that probably would make it difficult to have a conversation with Brian.

Then just ask him about the easy stuff, like Alex Sanchez, Ruben Rivera, and Marvin Benard. Then work up to the harder stuff.

I've actually been a semi-pro gambler (avocation) for 15 years.  No lie. Blackjack is my friend, and I've had a couple of good sports betting systems (math based).

But I did broadcast football and basketball in college. So maybe I am Fleming and just don't know it. It would explain those blackouts...

Re: from inside HQ...
I agree with the mole, although I think if the Giants really want to move Klesko they will have no problem doing so. You don't think he's an upgrade over Julio Franco in Atlanta?? And he's cheap as well. Atlanta is working on the Texeira thing though, and that will have to fall through first, which it probably will. Teams work on the big stuff all the way up to the last day, and then get around to getting the guys that actually are available in the last few hours.
