Bud Selig will attend Bonds's Games

From foxsports.com

"Throughout this season, I have watched Barry Bonds' pursuit of the home run record. Now that he is on the verge of tying the record, the time has come to announce that I will make every attempt to attend the record-setting moment," Selig said in a statement Tuesday.

"Out of respect for the tradition of this game, the magnitude of the record, and the fact that all citizens in this country are innocent until proven guilty, I will attend Barry Bonds' next games to observe his potential tying and breaking of the home run record, subject to my commitments to the Hall of Fame this weekend."

Bud will be in Cooperstown for the HOF induction ceremony on Sunday.  If Bonds hasn't broken the record by then, I expect him to be off on Sunday.

"Grass is greener on my side", said Bud
Bud Selig is smiling somewhere. All he has to deal with is PEDs. David Stern resides over huge integrity issues over his game while Roger Goodell has PETA barking at his door.

"Grass is greener on my side"
I'm sure that you didn't mean to downplay the seriousness of Vick's charges.

While PETA often undermines its message with its theatrics, there central message remains a valid one - animals should be treated humanely. What Wick is accused of doing (and there seems to be a tremendous amount of evidence against him), is hundreds of times worse than anyone cheating on a game!

It will be interesting to see if the media will grab onto that story with the same ferocity as they have the Bonds steroids case...

I'm a long-time dog owner and condenm these barbaric acts. These criminals should and will be punished. Yes, this is a story that has gained national attention, moreso, than Bonds for steriods.

Re: "Grass is greener on my side"
Never will the media go after Vick as much as it has Bonds.  Whatever Bonds has, whatever he is, he incites so much vitriol in the masses.  The people want to tear down the idols and the giants.  Vick is neither.  What Vick may have done is unforgivable but he is just some NFL player, albeit a popular one.  Bonds, however is a giant in many ways.  For that and the fact that he never played the game the way the man wanted him to, he will always be a target.

There is a huge thesis comparing the celebrity of Jordan to the infamy of Bonds in a society of racial tensions.

Innocent until proven guilty....piss off Bud.  He isn't Mike Vick and hasn't had shit for charges put up against him.

Oh...and <yawn>.  You're tiresome Bud.  Very tiresome.

Oh, but they still have the grand jury for that great case with Kimberly Bell, star witness!  You know, the disgruntled mistress who heard Bonds say lots of stuff before she got mad at him for not giving her more money and went to pose for Playboy!

Her credibility is rock-solid.

Exactly.  Worst application of the presumption of innocence I have ever seen.  This is the lamest story going. Does anybody other than news media types give a crap about who is here to watch Bonds break the record?  Now we have to watch his ugly mug reaction shots.

On a tangent
It was mentioned on the radio that Bonds could pull a Clemens next year.  Not that he would, but that it might be an idea to keep him fresh at 43-44.  It seems apparent that Bonds will want to play next year.  It would be interesting to know what others think of this.

Re: On a tangent
well, he'll be massacred in the press for it. just like Clemens should have been every year.  Not to mention the crap RogerRocketJesusofPitching (tm) should be taking for steroids as his career follows an even more obvious user's pattern than Barry's...

Re: On a tangent
I hate Clemens but I have to say he's pretty smart. He can get a crapload of money for playing half a season to prolong his career. As a guy declines but still wants to and can play, and the team is willing to commit the moneys to their payroll, then there's no issue. As much as we complain about how stupid many sports execs are the people who sign Clemens' checks know exactly what they are getting into. Should Barry go that route, I wouldn't be opposed to it until it's clear that he's not productive to the team.

I don't have an issue with Clemens the ballplayer.  I just throw up when ESPN covers him as if he's the second-coming.

I think Clemens is a grade A asshole, but the guy is still a pretty amazing ballplayer. And yeah ESPN is just beyond vomitous now. I can't even watch Baseball Tonight anymore. The network has managed to suck the fun out of everything good.

Re: Bud Selig will attend Bonds's Games
He didn't have to make the innocent until proven guilty comment. That was classless.

So, here is the Van Smack statement to the Commissioner of Baseball:
Enjoy the game(s). Please respect security by moving from the archway in right field when asked. It is requested that the minute Barry hits 756, you hail a cab, go directly to the airport and get the hell out of town.

Re: Bud Selig will attend Bonds's Games
Innocent until proven guilty of what?  Last time I looked, and despite yours and the entire Federal Governments tax-payer sponsored 5 year witch hunt,  he hasn't even been charged with being late for the post-game spread. Innocent? Until proven guilty?  Why you presumptious, overbearing, little bag of fake hair follicles!  Who and What gives you the right to insinuate and imply criminal behavior in the greatest hitter in the modern era and arguably of all time? A book? The testimony of a vengeful, renegade IRS agent? A couple of twisted hacks from the Chronicle who find no problem in receiving stolen testimony and using it to finance their own personal agenda?

You of all people, who plotted the overthrow of Bart Giammetti's  esteemed successor, Faye Vincent in a secret clandestine meeting in the basement of  a Chicago hotel. You who, schemed and connived your way into the commissioners job for your own personal financial gain? You who presided over the first and only cancellation of the World Series in the 130 plus years of MLB--a feat not even Hitler, Hirihito, and Mussolini combined could accomplish.  You who went in front of Congress in 1994 and lied about expansion. You, who took in the same Sandy Alderson who helped institute the "21st Century" sports conditioning and medical treatment in the Oakland A's clubhouse of Canseco and Mcgwire, to usher in the so-called "steroid era". The same Sandy Alderson who you made your right hand man when he was done in Oakland? You who appointed George Mitchell, notorious player-hater, to be a "special investigative commissioner" to supposedly "restore the integrity" of the game. You who sat like a tree stump in your own taxpayer funded house of ill-repute and declared ASG a "tie", rather than  demand that "the show must go on."  ...home field advantage in the World Series indeed!  A more poignant example of baseball ignorance does not exist in this universe you hack!  It is those actions that somehow empowers you with the moral authority to pronounce someone whose jock you are not worthy to carry, "innocent until proven guility"?

Unbelievable arrogance. Infuriating condescension. An insult to anyone old enough to understand the difference between right and wrong. What a humiliating and derogatory thing to say in public.  Really jaw-dropping. This is the kind of shit I would only expect to hear from some sonorous pompous asshole on the floor of the US Senate. No wonder he is such good friends with George Mitchell.

Re: Bud Selig will attend Bonds's Games
Bud has finally figured it out. It's one more little bit of pressure on Bonds if Selig is sitting there night after night, focusing attention on how Bonds is struggling to get across the finish line. The more it gets dragged out, the more chance that Bud's real dream comes true and Bonds injures himeself in some way that stops him short of the record. Picture this -- Bond pulls an oblique and doesn't get his power stroke back in time to finish the record off this year.. then what?

Re: Bud Selig will attend Bonds's Games
Listened to Kruk on KNBR this morning...not only did he call Selig a "great" commisioner, but thought it was a "great" statement. He did criticize him slightly for making the statement now, instead of two months ago.

This is crazy talk...in what world could Selig be considered a great commissioner?

About the commissioner position..I hate to bring this up again...but what does it say for the position when our current president feels that he's got all the qualifications to replace Bud after his wonderfully successful stint in Washington?
