Andy D'Alessio

Does anybody have a scouting report or anything on the guy?  We picked him in the 19th round this last draft and he had 23 HR.  He's a 1B, too.  The only real downside are his injuries, from what I can tell.

Do we have a legitimate 1B power prospect in D'Alessio, or is he just another guy that won't really pan out to be much?  He strikes me as sort of a sleeper prospect from what I've read.

Re: Andy D'Alessio
He's definitely a sleeper pick, but, like just about every other baseball prospect, he probably won't pan out to be much. Commentating on the MLB draft is the easiest job around, all you have to do is say "this guy probably won't get more than a cup of coffee" after every pick and you'd be right 80% of the time.
Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

Re: Andy D'Alessio
He was ranked 5th by Baseball America for College senior prospects in the draft . . .it'll be interesting to see if he develops into something special.

Re: Andy D'Alessio
Don't know too much about him except he's a big kid who hit well with power at a top notch college program against top notch competition.  The odds are probably still against him, but I've followed that draft and how draftees end up pretty closely over the last 3 years or so.  Players that fit that profile do a bit better than the average draftee from a similar round.

Re: Andy D'Alessio
Don't college 1bs have a better draft record than any other position?

I remember someone on this board offering a detailed explanation just before the draft.

I think D'Alessio's got a shot.  I'll be wathing his K/BB pretty intently.

Re: Andy D'Alessio
I looked at his scouting video when the Giants drafted him, Im holding out hope for him because of how he performed in college. However, what little I know about swing mechanics led me to believe that his swing is at least a tick slow and too long. I could be way off in my diagnosis but thats what I thought looking at his swing, for what its worth.

Wouldn't Doubt It
There must be something scouts don't like about him or he wouldn't have dropped to the 19'th round.  Still, I'm cautiously hopeful about him.

Re: Wouldn't Doubt It
His swing looked really handsy and actually kind of weak for a guy with double digit home runs.  Maybe they can fix that?  hopefully.
this is a split signature of solidarity for Palestine and the current Giants "team".

Re: Andy D'Alessio
This is from the brewerfan.net site on D'Alessio:

D'Alessio was considered the top prep first baseman available for the 2003 draft, but slid to the seventh round, in which he decided to honor his commitment to Clemson. It has taken him a few years for his productivity to match his pre-college hype, but he is starting to show the power potential given his natural left-handed swing this spring. While he projects to hit for good power and will hit his fair share of doubles, his best attribute is his glove, as he would inevitably garner some comparisons to J.T. Snow and Doug Mientkiewicz.

I find it odd that he'd slip down that far in the draft.  He sounds like the definition of a sleeper.  Luckily for us, if he doesn't perform then it's not like we've lost much.

Re: JT with power? Sounds like sent from heaven
Can he play 1st?  Oh wait, he can!
Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Re: Andy D'Alessio
On the one hand, left-handed power bats (that don't belong to BLB) tend to languish in The Phone.  On the other hand, who knows, he'll hit a lot of doubles and triples.

Re: Andy D'Alessio
D'Alessio remains my favorite of the non-first round picks.

I liked the bat speed I saw in his scouting video....what I didn't like was the difference between his batting practice swing and his in-game swing.  In batting practice he had a short step, no hitch, and an incredible swing shape.  In the game footage, he had this Nen-like toe tap for his step, and it just seemed to throw his balance off.

The only thing I can possibly see about his slippage were the injuries he suffered early in the college season and his being a touch old as a college senior, but that's not enough for a power prospect to go to the 19th.  There must've been something else...I just can't find it.

I am very shocked that he's starting the year in the Arizona League.  I have to wonder if that has anything to do with Clemson being part of the post-season tourney, even if they were eliminated just after the draft.  His stats in seven games there are underwhelming, but it's just seven games.  I still expect him to be in S-K by August, with just Rothford and the occasional Downs and Ambort appearance at the 3 spot in Oregon.

D'Alessio goes yard once again
D'Alessio hit another HR on Tuesday. He is hitting clean-up. Angel Villalona was moved from the 3-hole to the 5-hole and is 2-3 today with a triple. Run Angel, run. Our boy Nick Noonan is 2-3 and playing 2B. Nooner committed his 4th error - ouch.
