Skip Bayless II?
No thank you. I hate that guy.
I was just trying to see if I could fend for Brian Sabean, but obviously I can't. I really don't like him. I feel like Ned Coletti might have had a little more know-how and cajones than Sabean. Sabean seems weak, and he almost cried on the Razor and Mr. T, show when Barbierri called him out on Benitez.
At any rate, I'm writing this bad boy from the airport in Japan wating to return to my native San Francsico. I caught a couple of games out here and I must say, these guys are good. I'm surprised there aren't more playing in the MLB. I understand the whole posting fee and then signing the players after that could be a task. But I feel the Giants should give this market another shot. I know Shinjo might have scared the Giants off for a while, but there are legit players here. Particularly 23 or 25 year old Norichika Aoki of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. This kid is the man. Does anyone else have any thoughts on any Japanese players?
Also, I've been hearing a lot of rumors involving Saltalamacchia. None of which involve the Giants. Has anyone heard anything about the Giants trying to obtain him. He's a switch hitting catcher with pop from both sides of the plate. He could be a nice piece in our "rebuilding process". Just a thought.
I was hoping this offseason we could make a run at A-Rod. That of course will probably remain a dream. The way I see our FA offseason going is this. Mike Lowell, Jermaine Dye, and David Eckstein/Omar Vizquel. These guys fit the mold for the Giants. Past their prime and overpriced. What do you guys think the Giants will try to do this coming offseason?
That last "diary" got a good response, I'm hoping this one will have a similar one. I'm looking forward to hearing what you kids have to say.

Re: Skip Bayless II?
Re: Skip Bayless II?
I think they will trade Matt Morris, Steve Kline and perhaps Ray Durham at the deadline. I think they will focus on hitting prospects in return, but I wouldn't be shocked if they received at least one pitching prospect (which I don't mind if he is the best prospect available).
I think they will make a very big move at Alex Rodriguez, although I doubt it will ultimately bear fruit. They might take Torii Hunter as a consolation prize, or they might even have to settle for Andruw Jones.
I don't think they will bring Pedro Feliz back, possibly opening the way for Mike Lowell. More likely to me is that they will pick up a third-base prospect in one of their trades.
Omar Vizquel will likely be gone, which should lead to the Giants trading for a shortstop prospect.
IMO Ryan Klesko could return if the dollars aren't too high nor the contract too long. If Klesko were re-signed for two years, he might be able to bridge the gap to Angel Villalona.
The Giants will likely search for a catching prospect, but my sense is that they won't acquire one until the winter after the 2008 season.
I think Noah Lowry will slump in the season's second half, leading the Giants to trade him over the winter if they feel fairly comfortable that Jonathan Sanchez can take his place.
I think that Tim Lincecum is right now establishing himself as the staff ace and that amazingly, Matt Cain could be traded for a really good bat in the winter after the 2008 or 2009 season.
I think the Giants will trade for another bullpen arm over the coming winter, likely dealing a player they are unable to unload at this year's trade deadline. If not over the winter, it is possible they could also wind up trading Durham for a reliever at the 2008 deadline if Ray hasn't gone by that time.
I think the Giants would like to acquire one more big outfield bat, but that their primary trade focus will be for infield prospects for the left side of the infield.
The Giants will almost certainly get a lot younger, and the age change could be dramatic. Assuming they sign at least two of the three first-round draft picks this season, I suspect they will deal one or more young prospects by the off-season following the one coming up for a prospect or prospect who is more major-league ready, possibly even a player already in the majors.
These are just guesses, and there is every possiblity more of these ideas won't come to pass than will indeed happen. The next couple of years will likely be disappointing -- but they should be interesting in a way that hasn't happened with the Giants in over a decade. Hopefully they will acquire players who whet our future appetites to offset our dismay with the present through the end of the decade.

it'd have to be really good, and probably more than one. like the Miguel Cabrera with a side of Hanley kind of really good

Re: Skip Bayless II?
You've got to pick your targets, something that the giants don't seem to do very well regardless of the player's nationality.
Re: Skip Bayless II?
Unlike Mr. Sharksrog, I do not believe Cain will be traded. It's our starting pitching which is our strongest and most youthful area in which the rebuilding has already begun, and trading Cain would hurt that. We have nobody in our system who is able to replace Cain's ability, unless the trade brought us a Philip Hughes (or perhaps even a lesser quality, a la Jeff Niemann) caliber pitching prospect.
David Eckstein will not be playing here. At least, he shouldn't be. I'd MUCH rather take Cesar Izturis than Eckstein. I can understand Mike Lowell. And I don't believe we should sign A-Rod, because we'd be able to sign at least 2 quality players for one year of his contract (think Lowell, Eric Gagne, and possibly Torii Hunter).
Re: Skip Bayless II?
If Eric Gagne is ever anywhere near a Giants jersey and it's not an opposing player's or an assailant's, I'm going to have to think long and hard about the potential health benefits of morphine and its various cocktails.

Re: Skip Bayless II?
Don't know a whole lot about the Japanese market, about the only thing we do know is that Japanese relievers own, but bullpen should be the least of the Giants concerns right now.
The reason you don't hear the Giants in Salty trade talks is they'd have to give up Cain or Lincecum to get him and that's not going to happen.
I agree the Giants don't have much of a shot with A-rod, unless they plan on increasing payroll over the 100 mil mark from next year onwards.

Re: Skip Bayless II?
Another market we should focus on is Latin America. For the life of me I don't understand how a franchise who was one of the fisrt franchises in MLB scouting down thier, and brought players like, Cepeda, Marichial and the Alou brothers , hasn't done anything in Latin America for years. I mean you would think we could have found the Cabrera's, Ramirez's, Pedro's and Big Pappi's before other teams. But Im glas with Angel's signing last year, and that other kid last week that we are looking down their again.
I agree A-rod ain't coming here, the sooner fans realize that, the less heart broken you will be when we don't sign him this off season. I say trade Morris(if he still has any value) Winn, Vizquel , Durham and maybe Lowry and Bonds(if the price is right) get some young players in return(Balentin, Jones, Brandon Wood, Asdubral Cabrera or any guys with potential) and play them and our other kids(Frandsen, Lewis, Shoeholtz, Ortmier) . I rather see A team of young guys get sweep, then that pathetic display we saw over the weekend.

Re: Skip Bayless II?
Our new guy we got from the Dodgers - kind of a trade with the Dodgers for Colletti - and he was involved with signing Raul Mondesi and other Latinos for the Dodgers previously. He seemed to have a good track record with the Dodgers but I don't recall any other names other than Mondesi.
Yeah, I would have to agree that A-Rod isn't coming here. El Lefty Malo covered the 2008 payroll in a post at his site and there probably isn't enough money to get A-Rod, let alone A-Rod and other free agents.

Re: Skip Bayless II?
A Cromulent Reply
What a nice laundry list of unrelated arguments! That was a well-written piece of non-claptrap that never made me want to retch!
Daisuke also wanted to come to the bigs! Need I remind you that the player's desire to enter the majors does not directly determine the posting fee?
Sit you butt in your seat, KID. (Do you like being called kid)? The fact of the matter is, the fee is determined by the competition among teams desiring his services (though under-the-table business between a MLB and the Yakult Swallows could occur).
You can at least properly reply to hometownboy's comments, but you chose to start another line of messages. He was talking about the $51 million posting fee, which to a first approximation, has nothing to do with the player's desire to come to the bigs. Teams have to bid on the rights to negotiate a contract. And since he is not a free agent until 2012, wouldn't the Japanese team want a LARGE compensation for posting him? Hmm? They would lost potential years of milking money of his fan attraction! $$$
Oh, what do you say? His desire to enter the majors means he will accept a lower salary?
BS. Jpo, since you appeared on this site, you have been full of hot air. Really, he isn't going to try to get as much money as he can? Athletes don't care about money?
In addition, your reason that he will not cost as much as Dice-K is that "he's not a pitcher?" So you rule is that pitchers are always paid more than position players? Is that what you are saying?
What kind of money was being sent to position players like Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano during the off season? Their contracts were at least comparable to the contract Barry Zito, a pitcher which even you should know, signed!
