I'm sitting in the Richmond Airport, quite bored, so I decided to elaborate on my dislike for Dave Roberts wearing orange and black. A couple days ago I posted a little diary called, "Warriors and Giants Draft Choices." In the diary, I made a poll asking the McCoven which of these terrible options would they most rather have: Dave Roberts playing every day in center field and leading off, Sabean signing on for another 5 years, having the Giants win every single game from here until late October only if you receive a punch in the genitals before the first pitch each game, Cammy in the booth next to Kruk and Kuip, and Cain-er continuing his valiant efforts on the mound, only to have a deceivingly bad record. I was a little surprised at the deinitive support for Roberts.
I mean, I like the GUY, Dave Roberts. He's a very likeable GUY. He's got a great smile, he's fun to watch, the fans love him... I just hate the ball player, Dave Roberts.
I posted a scouting report for the aging veteran as if I knew what I was talking about. Someone called me out on the fact that I would not expect more than a .240 average out of him. They said he's a career .260 hitter or something. Fine... But I would not expect more than a .240 average out of him THIS year or any year after this. I don't think the guy has a bad approach. I just don't think he's much of a hitter. He hardly hits anything hard. Most of his hits find holes. That's great that he does find holes, but I think you need to hit the ball hard to be a great hitter. Ichiro would NOT bat .330 all the time if he merely slapped the ball into the ground, found holes, and beat them out. He drives the ball very well. So, that's my completely knowledge-lacking opinion fo Dave Roberts from April 1 of this year on to the end of his career. He won't be expected to hit much more than .240 over the course of a season.
Next, I received a rather puzzling argument against my assertation that he plays bad defense. Some people said there is no statistical evidence to support this. Ok, maybe not. I'm not the biggest stat guy. I like stats, and I like people that hoard stats like fat girls hoard donuts. Stats can be very useful. But Dave Roberts poor defense goes beyond stats. Maybe there are stats to defend that he doesn't have a below-average arm. Maybe there are. I don't care. He throws like my girl-friend after she's pitched nine innings. He is inaccurate, and incapable of breaking rice-paper (that's not a racial comment even though he's half Japanese). Aside from his rag arm he is a poor route runner.
I know he's not catching passes from Drew Brees or something, but he should be running better routes to the ball. He's been a major league outfielder for how long (someone help me out here)? Safe to say at least 5 years. I know he's primarily a left fielder. Maybe that's where he should stay. A back-up left fielder for the Twins or something. He looks lost on anything that doesn't hang up in the air. Hell, Noah Lowry can catch balls that hang up in the air. You want to see a good route-running center fielder? Some that come to mind in the modern era include, Mike Cameron, Andruw Jones, Torii Hunter, Ken Griffey Jr., Aaron Rowand is amazing at it... Even Bonds pre-2000 ran good, clean routes to scorching liners and gappers. A good, major league outfielder can run with his head down, look up at the last second, and run down something over his head or to his left or right side. Roberts cannot. Plain and simple. He is as big a defensive liability in center field as the young Fred Lewis.
Ok, I have to go board this damn aircraft now. I didn't have time to edit, or spell check. Sorry for the rough read.
