Scary stats

Remember when the Giants were 12-8 and riding an 8-game winning streak? We were in first place and loving life, and winning the close games as well. Here are some statistics:

On April 26,

Overall record: 12-8
1-run game record: 5-2
2-run game record: 4-2
9-4 in games decided by 2 runs or less

Post April 26,

Overall record: 16-24
1-run game record: 2-9
2-run game record: 2-9
4-18 record in games decided by 2 runs or less
12-6 RECORD IN GAMES DECIDED BY 2 RUNS OR MORE!!!!

I don't really know what to make of this, but it is clear that the Giants have a problem winning close games. From tonight and this past week it is obvious that we keep making mistakes in the clutch when there is an opportunity to put the game out of reach. Making outs on the basepaths, striking out or popping up with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs, going 0-1000 with the bases loaded...And all it does is put more pressure on the pitching staff and especially the bullpen. Everyone knows the Giants can't score runs late in ballgames when it matters, so its just a matter of time for when the bullpen will give up the run to win the game. Is there any solution to this?!!?

Re: Scary stats
No way - the sky is staying. It's pretty clear that Vizquel has been playing out of position a lot more frequently than before.

Re: Scary stats
Seems like if we had a respectable offense, we might be winning more games. It would also help if we weren't 'cursed'.
Good news: Brian Sabean has left us in position to be in contention by the next century, at least.

Re: Scary stats
So i guess this is what it must feel like to be a Rockie fan year after year only reversed in terms of offense/pitching, but still the same level of overall suckitude.  The only bright spot of this season is knowing that Brian Sabean will be out the door at the end.

Re: Scary stats
Wasn't it around the end of April that Barry went into his huge skid?

Re: If I could fix one thing, it would be Barry
I agree with placing this blame squarely on one Barry Lamar Bonds.  He is the leader of our offense and he ain't leading and thus too much pressure is being put on the rest of the offense to pick up his slack.  I am not taking about the pressure of hitting after a walk to Bonds.  This Barry can do noting about.  I am talking about having to bat in too many critical situations and feeling you have to come thru becease you gib guy has not come thru.

Everybody else on the offense will start relaxing and producing as soon as Bonds starts producing.  It all depends on Barry.  He Mom is right, he is the big guy and he ain't performing like the big guy.  He needs to lead with results!

VERY NICE !!

Omar Vizquel wants Shepard out. NUFC would be better for it!

Re: If I could fix one thing, it would be Barry
I wouldn't blame Barry.  He still is by far the best offensive player the Giants have had on the season.

Re: Scary stats
I can tell you one thing.  I am physically tired just from watching this last batch of games, partly because I go to work very early, and partly because I'm almost 40.

So it's hard for me to imagine what it's like to PLAY all these extra inning games, with jet lag and flying around the country.

Or to keep using the entire roster in games.  Last night was the worst, but pitching guys one or two innings in these 12 and 13 inning wonders means extra wear on the bullpen (and almost starters, last night).  So, regardless of the causes of the close games, I'm thinking depending how many folks end up on the DL after this, the winning percentage isn't going to get better in the near term, maybe not until the allstar break when almost everyone will be able to rest anyway.

Re: Scary stats
The Giants are on a pace to play almost 90 one/two run games.

Won't happen though. They will totally collapse and be noncompetitive by the end of the month and will no longer be close in games after the fifth inning.

Save Matt Morris. Save The Pitchers. Save The World.

Re: Scary stats
You don't need to look too deep to find bad stats. The won-loss record and the amount of games we're behind the leaders is all you have to look at. If the Giants plan on getting back in the race, they better make a major move soon. If not, say so and start unloading.

Re: Scary stats
It's easy to have an emotional disgust at losing close games, but it's a basic sabrmetric idea that winning or losing the close ones is fairly flukish, so the numbers you show make me optimistic.

Re: Scary stats
unfortunately, I don't agree. I don't think it's flukish. Teams with a good bullpen, clutch hitting and smart hitters who know how to move runners are going to be better in close games. I think the Giants have a decent bullpen, but the offense just will never get it done.

Re: Scary stats
To attempt to answer Joe Birdie's question, the scary stats mean that the Giants have been very unlucky.  The Giants have scored more runs, 269, than they have allowed, 246, and their expected win total is 33-27.

There has never been proven to be clutch or "unclutch" hitting, just lucky or unlucky run scoring.  If a finger can be pointed to their poor record in close games, it can be pointed at their inferior bullpen.  I believe they have blown seven late inning leads this season.

But anyway you shake it, this is a .500 team.  I think their starting pitching has been allowing less runs than they ordinarily would, their offense has been unlucky and their bullpen stinks.  Might be better in the long run that they have lost more games than they should have.  Maybe.

Re: Scary stats
Is Ray Durham popping up on a 3-1 count with the bases loaded and one out unlucky or just bad?
