This is too odd. . .

Steve Kline is a career 38/38 in save opportunities.  Does that strike anyone else as just one of those "wtf?" kind of facts that make NO sense whatsoever?

It made me wonder: how weird would it be if we had Kline closing out games for us?  A guy that's not too bad or not exceptional as a middle reliever/setup man is lights out as a closer.  Wow.

Re: This is too odd. . .
Is that just ninth inning save ops? Because I find it hard to believe he's never blown a single save op his whole career (and harder to believe he's only had 37).

Re: This is too odd. . .
It has to be just 9th inning opps because he has 21 career blown saves according to ESPN.com.

Re: This is too odd. . .
Maybe, although I'm guessing it was just a mistake.

Re: This is too odd. . .
This actually brings up a pet peave of mine. Kline has 151 holds, and 21 blown saves (Presumably all before the 9th). Those should really be called "blown holds" and essentially make him 151/172 (88%) in hold opps and 38/38 in save opps. But instead, his career save percentage is 64% (38/59), which is deceptively low. The bottom line is: you shouldn't get a blown save in the 6th or 7th inning because you weren't attempting to get a save in the first place.

Re: This is too odd. . .
Absolutely. There are problems with the save statistic to begin with. There is the blown save problem you mention, and then there are a ton of problems with the hold stat. Many ineffective outings end up as holds, such as the infamous day in LA when Dustin Hermanson earned a hold and a loss in the same game since he wasn't actually on the mound when Finley hit the grand slam. (1/3 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 ER, a loss, and a hold.) Add it all up and save percentage for a setup man isn't really a stat at all, and hold percentage is pretty shaky.

Scott Linebrink: 4 for 24 lifetime in save opportunities, and if he takes over for Hoffman next year, I guarantee you some jackass San Diego writer will use that stat as proof that Linebrink doesn't have what it takes to close.

Re: This is too odd. . .
I don't think there is anything magic about it - coincidence?  Kline used to be good?  (Instead of pretty OK - right groug?)

Kline isn't our best pitcher - not even close.  He shouldn't be the closer.

Re: This is too odd. . .
It's an amazing stat... repeated twice by Krukow.

And it's entirely untrue. Kline is 38 for 59 in career save opportunities, which is about what you'd expect for a guy who spent most of his career as a setup guy, where he rarely gets a chance save a game but often gets a chance to blow one.

Factor in his 151 holds and he would by 189 for 189 if he had never blown one. That would be pretty OK.

I think we've definitely established that Steve is pretty okay!

Re: This is too odd. . .
Steve ISN'T OK.  He had a good ERA last season, but only because the guys who relieved him did an exceptional job of keeping runs off his ERA.  Add in the fact that he allowed more inherited runs to score than average, and the guy was responsible for about six runs per nine innings.

That's about what his actual ERA is this season.  Pitched well tonight though.

Yeah, we know he sucks.  We're just playing to groug's signature.

Well, I am anyway.

Re: This is too odd. . .
I was watching on mlb.tv so it was the wrong feed and I didn't hear it, but I think what Krukow meant was that he was 38/38 in save opportunities, so his blown holds (to use the correct stat) weren't counted against that record.

And I'm glad that I can get people to think something just by putting it in my signature.

Re: This is too odd. . .
Kline blew a ninth inning save here... there are probably a few others out there somewhere.

I'm sticking with "there was a typo on the on-screen graphic and Krukow had know way of knowing the numbers were wrong."
