SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum

For those of you who haven't read it yet.  I like it when Verducci calls Tim the "IT guy".

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
Good fluff piece, but the parts about Bochy's view of pitch counts for those two guys is much more alarming than fluffy. I get that Lincecum may just be a freak in that regard but I really wish we weren't insisting on testing that.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
It is a good article though - Verducci clearly does have an opinion on the pitch counts but he has done his research and presented some good counterexamples - a rarity in today's often agenda-driven sportswriting.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
I also like his point about innings - that's just a ton of innings he's on pace to throw and I agree that he could be served with some Verlander-esque resting or, as Verducci suggests, bullpen time in August and September.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
Maybe so, but pointing to Maddux and saying "Hey, it worked out OK for him!" isn't really evidence one way or the other.  Some guys can handle that many pitches and that many innings; it looks like most can't.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
Yeah, I meant counter-examples to the idea that pitch counts are maybe overrated - He appears to think that Lincecum can probably throw 100+ pitches without a problem but did still point out cases where doing that blew out arms. I tend to think that he may be right about The Enchanter, I'd just prefer not to have to find out so soon.

Wow. So not only is Lincecum good on the mound, he's the guy everyone calls when they can't read their e-mail or log on to the server.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
Tiny Tim is a horseshout nickname.

Nice article, and good anecdote about the kids in the city.

It's great that he's joe rubberarm and all, but I don't think I'd be quite as blase about it as Bochy.

Finally, what's the deal with all the raving about his "durability" and "slight build"?  Would it be better if he had a history of sore arm and a Charlie Manuel gut done-lapping over his belt?  Kent Tekulve, Rick Reuschel, whoever.  I don't think I buy that physique has anything to say about performance, except to the extent of poor performance from big fat slobs, or likelihood of muscle pulls, cardiac arrests, or insulin shock from going without donuts for a whole game.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
I've always wondered about pitchers' sizes.  On one hand, people want taller (and bigger) pitchers in that they potentially have a better trajectory for the ball.  Okay, I suppose that makes sense.

But does it also make sense that someone who's 6'4" and weighs somewhere around 210 to 240 kind of "too" big?  Starting and (especially) stopping that body within a motion as violent as a pitching motion can't be good for that player.  I'd imagine it takes a huge toll on the ligaments in the leading/front leg of a pitcher.  Does this make sense?

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
Might I add that Verducci is a cunt...

I mean, the pitch count comparison was nice, but was there seriously anything in this piece we didn't know, let alone, wasn't totally obvious?

Verducci's about as insightful as that annoying couple on 1,000 Places To See Before You Die.

Go to India: "Wow, it's so beautiful here"
Go to Paris: "I'm really amazed by how beautiful it is here"
Go to the Bahamas: "You know, I'm struck by the beauty of this place"

Screw you Verducci and 1,000 Places To See Before You Die couple!!!!

Still, always nice to get a good fluffing...

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
Nice insight, Bryce.  I haven't knowingly ever read Verducci, but already I have more respect for him than for you.  When someone feels the need to call someone a name, apparently he doesn't have much else with which to demean that someone.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
So because you already know everything in the article, that makes it crap?

Lincecum has 6 big league appearances, so I'm guessing the rest of the country's (SI is a national publication) non-hardcore sports fans  are still just hearing about him.

I hope blasting the article and writer just so you can be a know-it-all made you feel good.

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
Well, calling Verducci an abusive name and ridiculing the couple from 1,000 Places to See Before You Die is an example of ass-hole humor, which admittedly is not everyones cup of tea.

For reference, Verducci was prominently featured on television when SI published the Game of Shadows chapter in '06, and used to be syndicated on Yahoo! Sports...but really his only claim to local infamy is in dumping on Bonds.

To some extent I can sympathize with the plight of the nationally syndicated sports columnist, who must come up with easily digestible material that has broad appeal.  However, I find Verducci just re-frames the obvious, or argues a point of no consequence.  I feel like there are way better bloggers, and even espn.com writers, than Verducci, and we're only here talking about his piece because it's SI, a pub, IMHO, long declining in relevance.

I've also historically held SI in low regard for cashing in on a swimsuit issue each year to the tune of $50M, and will always jump at the opportunity for make fun of a long-tenured SI "reporter" for owing to Kathy Ireland for their livelihood.

Look, don't get me wrong, it's nice to be fluffed...

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
SI's quality of writing has gone steadily downhill. I subscribed to SI once upon a time. There's a reason I don't waste the money any longer.

I should say Verducci is a cunt, but at least he's getting paid pretty well for it. We should all be so lucky.

See what I did there? I explained why I think Verducci and friends are cunts. I explained myself. It'd be better to say why you find a comment ridiculous rather than just saying "UR RIDICULOUS!"

Re: SI Fluffs Cain, Lincecum
As to why your comment ridiculous, I think calling anyone that name is ridiculous.  And when I read the article, it seemed fine, possibly even with a bit more depth (pitch count) than most articles.

I just LOVE it when people criticize others who are better than they.  Maybe you're better than Verducci, but I'm doubting it.

It appears you may have a journalistic background and/or education, so that would at least give a hint of validity to your criticism.

But let me ask, why the need to criticize?  Why the need to call someone you don't even know by such a vile name?
