Hey guys. As some of you may or may not know, I was the representative for Giants Cove in the MVN Mock Draft.
Looking for some thoughts/comments on the picks I made for the Giants. Keep in mind, we're only picking round one, and then stopping there because of time contraints (minorleaguebaseball.com is a tad more efficient). Without much further ado, here's what I took in round one:
#10 Jason Heyward OF/1B (HS)
I believe there was already a thread about Heyward, so I'll just go over some basics. Heyward's a very talented outfielder/1B type with a big bat that's drawn comparisons to guys like Derrek Lee and even Willie McCovey. Needs some seasoning in the minors to learn to utilize his lower body, but comes off as a solid pick.
#22 Matt LaPorta 1B/C (College)
While some may shy away from LaPorta here, I love his bat, and the fact that he's a college player helps as well to balance out the high school aged Heyward. LaPorta has "unlimited power potential," and to me is a can't-miss at 22 here. A Boras client, he may prove to be a tough signing, but with a bat like his, is worth every dollar.
#29 Michael Burgess OF (HS)
Burgess comes out of the same mold as Heyward, as a toolsy outfielder with a great bat, only has more speed and a cannon for an arm. Picture a Giants team with Heyward in left, Burgess in right, LaPorta at first, and Miguel Villalona at third.
There are your 2-3-4-5 hitters of the future. All three of these guys have huge upsides and unlimited potential to be great ballplayers. These three make out for a pretty good haul in the first round. Feel free to comment, and yes, I've read the Scout.com scouting report about how Heyward is supposed to be the bust of the draft, but his talent to me outweighs a single report.
