'02 Draft
Maybe Sab's isn't so bad. ESPN says we had the 3rd best draft in '02. Insider only: http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft2007/insider/columns/story?columnist=law_keith&id=2892330
3. Giants: The Brian Sabean era is not commonly associated with solid drafting, but the Giants might have nabbed more big leaguers in this draft than any other club. First-rounder Matt Cain is very good, with star potential; second-rounder Fred Lewis should be an everyday player; and they picked up Dan Ortmeier (third), Kevin Correia (fourth) and Clay Hensley (eighth) along the way.

Re: '02 Draft
Cain was a brilliant find. Lincecum falling to us at #10 was pure luck. Lowry could be decent over the long haul. Hennessey is moderately serviceable. Linden looked great on a baseball card. Lou Colletti was no doubt thrilled to be drafted, just like Nick Conte. Otherwise, I have a hard time giving the Sabean Draft Era a grade above "D." Okay, for not wimping out and passing on Lincecum, you could make it a "D+." Without Cain and Lincecum, it's a straight F for his entire tenure.
In the midst of the miserable inaugural year of the New York Mets (40-120), manager Casey Stengel was famously quoted as saying "Can't nobody here play this game?" I think the same thing when I review Brian's drafts.
