Two Quick Ideas

Jay Witasick is in waivers from the A's and seems to be healthy.  He's owed $1.5M before he clears waivers.  I think he's worth considering, if not signing.  If he clears waivers then he could be signed for the minimum and I think that's a no-brainer.

The Yankees are down to Josh Phelps at 1B for the next two months, or more.  Would they give anything worthwhile for Klesko?  Would they give a box of baseballs?  I don't think Klesko adds much to the Giants lineup these days, but he might be worthwhile for the Yankees'.  And that might make his value higher now than it will be at the deadline, when he's still hit only 2 HR or thrown his back out.  Or, at least, he might look viable enough to entice the Yanks to give something relatively worthwhile in return.  Bronson Sardinha?  Great name, of Portuguese descent, and the Giants can match the Phillies Hawaiian for Hawaiian.  Hopefully Sabean wouldn't take Jim Brower back from Scranton.

Rip away.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Klesko is a huge part of our offense, and he only makes $1.75m (right?).  The Yankees are moving Johnny Damon to 1B anyway, and he makes too much money for them simply to give up and bench him.  Besides, Klesko isn't that much of an upgrade over Josh Phelps, and like Phelps, Klesko sucks against LHP.

As for Witasick... meh.  I don't know if he is better than Correia or Chulk.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
I would rather hang on to Klesko seeing as how I don't think Richie has been producing enough to be the sole 1b on the team.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Considered by itself, I wouldn't want to trade Klesko right now. He is nominally one of our power hitters.(!) If were out of it in July/August, trade away. In that case, call up Leone or McClain or see if Ortmeier could handle 1B.

I'm not sure the Yankees have enough surplus in their minor leagues to be trading us anything we really want.

On the other hand, if there is a weakness we might exploit now, I'd be making inquiries.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
I agree, there's no rush. Klesko's performance is not a fluke. Dude has always been a hitter. So I don't feel the "trade him before he comes back down to earth" impulse I feel with, say, Matt Morris. (I suppose a "trade him before he inevitably gets hurt" perspective might have some merit.) Beyond that, for now he should be in San Francisco and batting third against every righthanded pitcher.

But, yeah, it never hurts to listen to offers.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Maybe in July we can trade Klesko, but I can't stomach the idea of Rich Aurilia as our everyday first baseman at the moment.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Whatever gave you the idea that Richie is a firstbaseman?

Oh, I see. The lineup card.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
I'm not too crazy with acquiring Jay Witasick.  But I could see it happening.

I think a more intriguing option is trading for Mike MacDougal of the White Sox- he seems to have fallen out of favor with Guillen (I believe he was sent down to AAA today).  Although he's been struggling mightily this season, I think it'd be worth making a small deal to grab him.  Dude's got closing experience, who knows . . .

I am the thinking man's thinking man.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
I also like the idea of trying to aquire Macdougal.    He was sent down today along with David Aardsma.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Similar to the Jenks deal? (without the exception that when the Sox did the deal they were actually a GOOD team)

Re: Two Quick Ideas
I like Klesko (weird to say that) on our team and think he should be in there every single game against righties.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Klesko is one of the few batters on the Giants who does not make me think "Out" when he bats.  As much as I like Rich Aurilia, there really isn't a comparison as to who's the better first baseman.
Steve Kline: He's pretty okay!

Re: Two Quick Ideas
I could watch the replay of Klesko's homer today a bazillion times and not get tired of it.  Ridiculous.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
He also gets his share of walks, which is very rare on this team. The Yankees tried to sign Rich Aurilia during the offseason, maybe they would be interested in him. I think Richie will heat up in the second half no matter which team he is on. By the way, the Yankees are kind of thin in the minor leagues. Who did you want for Klesko??
Hate to be the Messenger of bad news, but strike three, you're out!!

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Yeah, the problem with that deal is (and I am very much about shopping any and all veterans on this team) that Klesko is the kind of guy who can fetch a B-level prospect and the Yankees don't have many interesting B-level prospects. They have some top-tier talents (Hughes, Tabata, maybe Chamberlain) but not a lot of second-tier talents that really get me excited.

Re: Two Quick Ideas
Also, it's looking more and more likely that the Yankees won't be buyers at the deadline, so they'd have little use for Klesko or Aurilia.

We've already seen what Jay Witasick can do in high leverage situations.  Pass, pass, pass.
