"Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"

Henry Schulman of the Chronicle wrote an article that was in today's paper, here:

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2007/06/29/SPGC8QO0L31.DTL

Sounds like he's trying to tell us fans to not expect anything great from Sabean, or that we'll actually be buyers at the deadline.  Is he just trying to keep us from getting our hearts crushed?

I'm sure I'm not the only one out here who isn't very confident in Sabean's direction, even as our team stumbles.  The moves he could make at the deadline could very well help resurrect our franchise with good, young talent, it'll stay the same, or he'll just mess it up even more.  Perhaps I'm wrong in thinking he'll be replaced after the season's end.

While I long for the rebuild
I don't expect it, and would be hard-pressed to outline a plan that could actually look a) remotely realistic or b) any good.

Cain's 2-9 record may be a good thing, in the end, as it conceivably hurts his trade value. I must admit that, once in a while, I can almost conceive of trading Cain, much as I absolutely love the guy. Then I have to remind myself that we simply are not going to get the young studs that we all want. Here's the two options I foresee:

a) more of the same. Ugh. Probably the most likely scenario.

b) losing as many vets as possible, getting a small group of fair to decent youngsters, and sucking for a while as part of a genuine rebuild. Requires new GM.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
In his KNBR show last week Sabean seemed to admit that some rebuilding was in order:
http://media.knbr.com/knbr/sabean.mp3

The problem is rebuild with what?  Unlikely to get much for out vets, and the article points out.  Niekro, Frandsen, Figueroa, Ortmeier, Schierholtz, Lewis... Our best trading chip is Matt Morris, and how much can we really expect back for him?  Maybe a low level B prospect.

Hardball times just posted an article boosting Paul DePodesta as the best GM candidate out there, not a shock that writers there would feel that way, but makes an interesting argument that P DeP lay the groundwork for their current success (trading for Penny, signing Lowe & Kent, avoiding Beltre) and that Colletti's been reaping the benefits while bumbling along (Schmidt, Pierre, Nomar disasters).  I don't think either guy gets credit for the success Dodgers' farm system, but I agree with those here who have put DePodesta as a possible candidate to replace Sabes.
Here is the link:

Last question, wasn't Dave Stewart in the market for a GM position a while back?  What happened to him?  I have no idea what kind of GM he'd make, however.

Here's to starting the long, painful rebuild with a new GM.

I don't think there will be a rebuilding.  In 08' It's going to be more of the same of what we've seen the last few years except bonds well probably be replaced with some FA. Hot swappable/Plug and play "win now" type of teams.

New to this site never posted before post on some other sites, but I like a lot of the info I get here, especially on our minor leaguers(or lack there of) so here's my 2 cents.

I say blow it up, trade anyone who has value. Im sure some contenders like, Cleveland, Detriot, maybe even the Mets can use another starter like Matt Morris. Mayabe someone who wants a bat with some pop can use Pedro Feliz, or Durham, maybe a team who needs some defense up the middle can use Omar. I say trade all these guys for some young bats.

Forget trading the old guys, Sabean must go first!!!!

Welcome ramirez415.  When you say "trade anyone who has value", are you including guys like Cain Lincecum and Sanchez?
Despite having a "For Sale" sign stapled to his forehead, Ryan Klesko's OPS+ is 123 as of 6/25/07. (Platoon shmlatoon; it's 195 vs. LHP)

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
No , sorry I should have been more clear Goofus, I meant trade any of our older veterans that have value. I want to keep our young staff of Linecum, Cain, Lowry , Zito, and Sanchez in tact. I also beleive a guy like Messenger can become a good closer, that pitch he struckout Khalil Greene with in the 9th the other day was nasty(to bad he gave up the homer in the 10th)So guys like him , Wilson and Hennyssey should stick around to try and build a bullpen.

but trade everyone else outside of Bonds with value.

Yes, EVERY player can be had
I would trade ANY Giants player(s) if it would improve the team for the future and for a long time. That would include Bonds, Cain, Zito, Lincecum or Villalona.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
I saw Jayson Stark's chat yesterday and he said the Mets would have little interest in Matt Morris because they only like power pitchers. That would explain why they're chasing Jose Contreras right now, even though he has already failed in New York. Here in New York, they would say Omar Minaya has no interest in Matt Morris because he's not Latin, but that's a different story. As I said on the other thread, the Phillies have to be interested in a pitcher like Morris, especially when he pitched such a great game in their ballpark last month.

what do you expect Towers to say about a fellow NL west team, especially one that has his friend managing it?? He's going to be gracious and pretend the team is not a joke. I would like to know what Towers says about the Giants when the media is NOT around. Towers picked up Milton Bradley today, and that's a great move for his team. Put him in the outfield with the returning Brian Giles and the Padres are the best team in the NL west for the third year in a row.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
I think folks are pessimistic about the value we could get for Winn, Durham, or Morris in a market that always seems to get increasingly desperate come late July.  But I'm also to the point where I don't much care what we get in return: Let Bonds walk and move Winn, Durham, Morris, Vizquel, Feliz, and Kline. I can't remember how long all of those contracts are, but their combined '07 salaries are nearly $35M.  Just to get out from underneath all that, SF doesn't need bats in return.  We should be willing to get batting donuts in return.  Cut your '08 salary commitments to about $50M and start targeting FA's at the corners and in the outfield.

Even if they do nothing, Feliz, Bonds, Klesko and Vizquel come off the books.  Remember, Matheny and Benitez's salaries come off the books this year too.

They shouldn't deal Morris, Durham and Winn just to clear salary room.  They need to bring back some value.  Otherwise, the team just has more holes to fill next year in an inflated salary market.

Over at Lefty's there's a nice piece about how HUGE-DONG-HITTING-FAs (esp. lefty HDHFAs) aren't likely to sign with SF because of May's Fields' far-away fences (he goes on to advocate moving the fences in).

So even if we free up a bunch of dough for '08, it could be the case that we are still unable to get what we need thru Free Agency.

Good article, but it made me sad.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
This is ridiculous.  The years to do the implosion was not this year.  He is three years too late, it should have been done in both 2005 and last year.  Imagine what he could have got for Schmidt or Durham last year?  They clearly had no intention of re-signing Schmidt.  Why keep him when you are in a race only nominally and when you really can't win it?  Last year he missed a great opportunity, but no one on the roster this year has the big name rep like Schmidt had.

The Winter of Discontent
The years to do the implosion was not this year.  He is three years too late, it should have been done in both 2005 and last year.

The club could have gone a different direction (as promised) this past winter. When Sabean rebuit this club in winter of 2006 he used spare parts of vet savvy once again.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
He supposedly looked to move Schmidt at the deadline last year but he wasn't going to do it cheaply, and you can't blame him because the Giants still had a shot last year. He supposedly offered Jason to the Mets for Lastings Milledge, but the Mets were after Roy Oswalt, and didn't want to trade their future for a pitcher they figured didn't want to sign an extension and play in New York.

No
it's time for Sabean to go. The team needs to get someone in there who will have the ability to rebuild via the draft, trading expensive veterans for young players, and signing free agents that are under 35 years old to reasonable contracts.
The Fringe was right.

Firesale
I agree, that Sabean will not become a seller easily.  I think it's possible though.  He kind of flirted with the notion the last two years and then drew back, but if we are under .500 and 10 or more games back as we approach the deadline, I think he may just pull the trigger.

What I'm less sure of is his ability to get good value in return.  It just seems that Sabean has been coasting for several years now.  The moves he makes and the players he acquires are the ones everybody else knows about.  He's shown very little imagination, no scratching under the surface.

I also disagree with the premise that a firesale would be unproductive if we don't get a franchise prospect in return.  Teams out there have value that they are willing to part with if you look hard enough and know what you need.  I mean, Ryan Klesko has been a good sign for us so far, so no disrespect, but Billy Beane picked up Jack Cust for virtually nothing and got a better hitter for a fraction of the salary.

Let's just look at 3 teams who could be potential buyers this year:

Cleveland:  No blockbuster prospects here, but I would be happy to pick up either Asdrubel Cabrera or Wes Hodges plus a second or third tier pitcher for Matt Morris.

Mets:  I'm not so sure Lastings Milledge is all that untouchable now.  They've got Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez who have probably moved ahead of him in their prospect rankings.  What about Mike Carp, a hard hitting 1B prospect?

Braves:  Doubt very much they will part with Salty or Elvis Andrus, but what about Brent Lillibridge or Kala Kaaihue?

Much as I would like to see the Giants make a playoff run, I just don't see that we are one or even two players away.  I think we can get value for several veteran players.  Trade the ones we can get value for and address the rest after the season is over.  Kevbo, Nate, Fred Lewis, Ortmeier and even Brian Horwitz need to get as many MLB AB's as possible between now and the end of the year.   I'd like to see Sanchez moved to starter and I'd like to see Pat Misch get some MLB innings this year.  Let the future begin now.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
I have been critical of Sabean here in the past, and especially after the horrible (imho) recent draft. To be fair, let me pass along something. I was talking to a Giants scout this past weekend; he's a longtime Sabean associate, still wears the Yankees WS ring he got while employed by Brian in NY.  We commiserated on the terrible season the Giants were having this year, and he said that "Sabes" (yeah, he actually called him that) told him a few years ago that it was Magowan's idea to surround Bonds with veteran talent while he was still playing, and that he (Sabean) was afraid that one day soon it would all go bad in a hurry (my words - paraphrasing here).

So, it appears the veteran-savvy-lover is Magowan, and we can blame him for that directive.  However, I still blame Sabean for the awful performance in the draft, and for that reason I want him gone a.s.a.p.  I just no longer blame him for everything.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
I'm not one of the more rabid Sabean-bashers around here, but this anecodote didn't improve my opinion of him any. His contract has come up a couple of times; he could have left if he seriously disagreed with the direction Magowan was insisting on. He could have got another front office job in a minute, and probably another GM job within a year or two. Budget constraints are one thing, but not being able to have a say in how the team is composed would have to make a GM feel pretty impotent. If this is how it truly went down, Sabean should have had some pride and bolted years ago.

I am skeptical, though. In my heart I believe that Sabean really believed all of those quotes like "at the end of the day, we thought signing Jose Vizcaino was the best thing we could do to help our ballclub."

Magowan vs Sabes
Let's see, a guy who's been with Sabes since Yankee days blames someone else.  Hmm....not too surprising.

Surrounding Bonds with Vets is not, by itself, a bad idea.  Sabean didn't even do a good job of that!

I suppose it was Magowan's idea to eschew power hitters for OBP/speed guys and then sign players with no power, low OBP's and no speed?

I suppose Magowan told Sabes he just had to have Michael Tucker and the only way to get him was to dump that draft pick?

You have the long series of bad trades starting with Russ Ortiz for Damien Moss.  Oh that's right, Merkin Valdez is going to make that a smart trade.

I can forgive Sabes for signing Felipe Alou as manager after Dusty left.  I can't forgive him for re-upping his contract long after everybody else had figured out he was an uncommunicative, impatient, crazy old man.

No, Magowan's main problem is that he didn't both Sabean and Alou himself at least 2 years ago.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
So I guess its Magowan's fault that "Sabes" gave

Marvin Benard 10Mill over 3 years
Edgardo Alfonso 28M over 4
Armando benitez 27 over 3

Traded Ortiz for Moss, Hillenbrand for Accardo(I think in a few years Accardo will show is he was the closer we have needed) and of course the A.J. Pierzinski trade.

Im sure Magowan tells him we have to draft a picther every year in the 1st round , then trade them for rent a players at the deadline every year.

I sick of the excuses , "Sabes" must go now.

Yeah well what about the kent trade in 97.  Im pretty sure he convinced magowan to trade fan favourite Matt Williams for a future hall of famerin Kent. What about in 01 when we traded armando rios and vogelsong for Schmidht.  Two of the greatest trades of all time.  How can you say the Ortiz deal was that bad?  Ortiz sucked after 03, and acutally if it wasn't for his run support in 03 he wouldn't have had nearly as good of a year. His era was around 4.

Re: "Is it Time for Sabean to Rebuild?"
Two points. First, if you haven't noticed Sabean has already been rebuilding this team. The Giants have one the youngest and most talented pitching staffs in baseball. That is not an easy accomplishment. Two, anyone who says they know this year's draft is a disaster is blowing smoke. No one knows how drafts turn out weeks after they happen. Wait until we see if everyone is signed and they have a few years under their belts, and then we can make a sound judgement on the quality of the players drafted.

Oh, and once again, keep DePodesta as far away from the Giants as possible.
