Everybody Hates Cammy

During a recent game, I got pissed off about having to see Cammy Blackstone yet again on an FSN broadcast, so I dashed off a lawyerly-like email to FSN complaining about her.  And hey, I actually received a response:

Dear Mr. Stamm:

Thank you for your recent comments regarding our station in general and our coverage of San Francisco Giants games in particular.

A decision was made in the off-season to try a roving reporter  at a select number (12) of San Francisco Giants home games.  The idea is to show some of the sights and sounds of the ballpark and interview some fans having fun at the game.  We selected lifelong Giants fan and local (KFRC) radio personalty Cammy Blackstone.  Some fans have enjoyed Cammy's reports, many other - like yourself - have not.

We appreciate your feedback and will take your comments in mind when we re-evaluate our game coverage strategy at the All-Star break and at the end of the season.

Again, thank you for taking the time to tell us what you think about our broadcasts of San Francisco Giants baseball.  Your opinion is very important to us.

Regards

So... who are these people who enjoyed Cammy?  I think they are made up.  Anyway, the line that caught my attention was the one about the decision to "re-evaluate our game coverage strategy" at the All-Star break.  Important stuff, because now, more than ever, you guys need to send your complaint emails to FSN to ensure that Cammy goes away for good.

I just went to FSN Bay Area's website and clicked on "Contact Us" to send my email.  They read them, so barrage their inbox with complaints.  You owe it to yourself and to every Giants fan to get rid of Cammy.  Go to it.

the problem here is that the Giants spend so much money on Kruk, Kuip and Miller (and Lon's pension) that they can't afford the rest of a real broadcasting crew (Flem's not yet arbitration eligible, so he's still affordable.) That's why we get FP and Cammie and other total scrubs.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
She basically does a "man on the street"-type interview with fans in the stands.  These interviews have nothing to do with baseball and are pointless and stupid.  Plus, Cammy has an annoying whiny voice, and the crap takes away from the game - usually, they have to cut back after something has already happened in the game that we missed.

Let's put it this way:  even if she were smoking hot, it would still be annoying and take away from baseball.  There are no redeeming qualities with Cammy, and there is nothing compelling about her being on the broadcast.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
Also, there is no pre-interview preparation, so the interviewees are invariably struck completely speechless by questions that they can't possibly see coming. It's awkward and not entertaining.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
OK.  That is absolutely taking it too far.  I don't like Cammy on the broadcasts, but I don't wish her any ill will.  For all we know, Cammy is a totally nice woman who helps the elderly, gives blood, recycles, etc...  and hey, she is a "lifelong Giants fan."

I know that my diary post isn't the best, but really, being mean about it and posting on her blog?  That isn't very cool.  I don't like her schtick and I don't want her on the broadcasts, but that isn't just her, because I don't want anyone on the broadcasts doing what she does.

Directing mean comments at Cammy herself isn't going to accomplish anything productive.  Besides, you are on Grant's blog.  Grant writes for FSN Bay Area.  Cammy works for FSN Bay Area.  From her blog, you can see that she reads Baseball Prospectus.  In addition to that being pretty cool, we also can be pretty sure that she reads baseball websites, and it isn't a stretch to think that Cammy could check out McC.

Does it look good if Grant's readers are behind personal, nasty attacks on Cammy?  Not so much.  Is it bad to make these pointless personal attacks anyway?  Yeah, even if Grant didn't write for FSN Bay Area and he didn't desire to work in the field.  So let's not go there.  If you don't want Cammy on the broadcasts, voice your displeasure to FSN.  And keep it professional.

Wow, I just saw the comments on there, I'm embarassed to be a giants fan.  I'm not even a huge fan of this diary in and of itself.  Asking for someone's job is just bad form unless they're doing something truly detrimental...the fact that she "annoys" some people, who gives a shit?  You're too stressed out.  Find a different hobby.  Put down the pad and pencil, stop writing networks and pretending they care, and plant a tree.

I think you missed what I was trying to say.  I wasn't suggesting personal attacks (maybe by encouraging people to write something mean gave the wrong message, although in fairness most people disaprove of her). I was simply encouraging people to express their negative feelings first hand on her blog.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
I'd much rather of Kruk and Kuip telling stories during the "downtime" than have any reporter in the stands talking to snot-nosed kids who are pretending to stand in line to run bases, but really were just trying to get on TV since 5 minutes later the camera showed them back in their seats.

But we really are lucky. At least FSN/Giants decided to hire an actual baseball fan as opposed to a plastic, albeit smoking hot, soon-to-be meteorologist, who mispronounces players names and needs to wear halter tops so people will forget she isn't making any sense.

Do they know to win the game a team has to actually score at least once?

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
I think the "Dump Cammy" movement would get more mileage if folks refrained from focusing on her appearance and jokes about her "face for radio", etc.

The fact that she's not exactly easy on the eyes would be irrelevant if she were even slightly funny and had less of a PR-shill-type presence. Not to mention the voice...oh, the voice.

That said, someone must enjoy her less-than-witty repartee, given that she's been a mainstay in Bay Area radio for a long time. While I personally change the dial the millisecond her voice hits my eardrums, others must find her enchanting for some reason.

One of the reasons Cammy sticks out so unpleasantly on Giants broadcasts is because we are blessed with some of the best on-air talent in the country in Kruk, Kuip and Miller. These guys are wry, informed and fun to listen to, even during these dark days. So in contrast, Cammy's schtick (and FP's as well) sounds like fingernails on a blackboard.

To FSN I say: nothing wrong with adding a "fan in the stands" reporter. Just find someone who is in or who aspires the same class as the rest of the b'casting crew. Maybe find a local comedian who's a ballfan. And definitely lose the shilling.

It's never too early to panic.

Exactly. But sadly I think a dump Cammie campaign would have less support if she were hot.

When my fiancé saw her on tv she asked, "Don't teams usually hire hot chicks with huge tits to do that kind of thing?"

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
First, you acknowledge that in the eyes of FSN and the Giants she's a PR shill, then you ask for her to lose the shill...Not going to happen.  While hating Cammy is the popular thing to do, look a little deeper into the boardroom that came up with this brilliant idea.  No doubt there's a bunch of people slapping each other on the back after another "successful" shill segment is transmitted into outer space.

My point in all this is that you should look to the organization/broadcasters who feel the need to shill, rather than the horribly horrible woman they chose to perform said act.

If they could get John Shea or Hank Shulman to do something like that, it would add more to the game.  Actually, Ray Ratto would be awesome, he used to be pretty frickin' hilarious when he'd come Alex Bennett's show on Live 105 back in the day.

My email to FSN
I hope this doesn't sound too rude, but this port inspired me to send FSN an email. Here's what I wrote:

When will you be holding auditions for the new post-all-star break FSN Giants roving reporter? I understand you will be re-evalusting your Giants coverage during the all star break, and undoubtedly you will realize that your roving reporter is not only performing way below average, but is slightly distracting. A call up is much needed. So, if you could post an advertisement or some kind of notice of when you will be holding auditions for a new roving reporter, that would be great. There are a lot of life-long Giants fans that would love the chance.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
She's really not that bad and compared to the other "Roving Reporters" she's above average. I'd even dare say that of the ones I've watched this season she is the best.

Actually she works in two ways for non-serious baseball fans.

  1. She takes a break in the action and shows (although this usually isn't her intention) how stupid fans can be.
  2. She's annoying enough so that the non-serious fan will realize that the game is actually pretty interesting comparatively.
Now having a roving reporter at a baseball game is pretty lame. Especially one that only talks to the fans and doesn't do interviews with Giants staff/management, but people in the Bay Area don't realize how bad it could be.

I suppose that this could be another instance of Giants  fans being really spoiled, but I'm getting very frustrated by what feels like FSN focusing less and less on the on-field activities. It's not even Cammy (though she doesn't help). It's just the fact that the focus isn't on the game (and they usually go to her when there is stuff going on and ignore the game for the 3 minutes or so it takes for her to conduct another worthless interview.)

I remember reading an article about how Giants game coverage changed dramatcially when the new ballpark opened.  The producers looked at the popularity of the park are trying to treat their coverage like being there.  They try to show more views inside and outside, more people in the stands and more of the peripheral activity that's going on.  All these things have made the big phone geometrically more popular than the stick.

I'd guess that Cammy is intended to be an extension of that.

Despite having a "For Sale" sign stapled to his forehead, Ryan Klesko's OPS+ is 123 as of 6/25/07. (Platoon shmlatoon; it's 195 vs. LHP)

Dammit, FSN, I want to watch the game!
Word, my friend. So much word.

Tangent alert! I noted this in my last few visits to the ballpark: parents and their young-ish children. I'm talking kids under 10 when I say this. The kids get restless and need to walk around, or the familt has to leave early altogether. I HATE having to leave early on weeknight games and the only reason I do is to get enough sleep so I can wake up and function at work the next day. I hate getting up from my seat during any time during the game. I'm there for the game, I'm paying to watch the players play, and I don't want to miss any of it. I guess I should take off my hat and hand it to the parents who are brave enough to bring the kidlets to the yard and sacrifice watching the game. I couldn't do that.

Cammie's schpiels are just another annoying distraction to the game. It's one notch better than watching the game on FOX, where they routinely focus the camera angles and/or topic of conversation on air to anything but the game at hand. STFU people. Give me the game I came for, and nobody gets hurt.

Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not fascist: SF Dugout

Re: Dammit, FSN, I want to watch the game!
I'm proud to say that last night, 11-year-old Goofus Jr. stayed focused on all 11 innings and the only time he left his seat was for one trip to bathroom and a couple trips to see the monitors in front of the press box to check the replays on controversial calls. (My buddies and I were booing the Durham out at 3rd call when he came back to tell us that the ump got the call right.)

Gamer!

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
This is the problem with Extra Innings I only see non-giants games every so often.

Apparently she is good. At least according to a friend and red sox fan.

During the Rockies series, however, two separate times she repeated what the announcers had been talking about earlier in the broadcast, nearly verbatim. It annoyed me and I assumed that was her shtick. Be hot and repeat what others say.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
The Braves have a sideline reporter guy.  He doesn't add much, but when they do cut to him, it is for baseball stuff - injury reports, "Bobby Cox said X," that sort of thing.

It isn't necessary, because that info could just be relayed to the booth, but at least he isn't out there with an Indian headdress on asking fans about the damn Tomahawk Chop.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
cammy is the devil.  her reports make me vomit and my head spin around.  here is my take, if you want a sideline/roving reporter fine.  no offense to women, but if it is going to be a woman who knows nothing about baseball, then at least make her hot.  she know nothing about baseball and looks like my dogs ass.  when me and the old lady are going about our marital obligations during commercial breaks, and yes like true giants fans we start during one break, stop when the game comes back on and continue when the next commercial break happens (damn i love a lot of pitching changes) and when the game comes back on and cammy is on the screen, it is tough for me to get back going after seeing her ugly mug.

I could give a shit about her looks, but you do make a good point.  If we're forced to tolerate a sideline reporter as amazingly annoying as Cammy (with the faux enthusiasm for EVERYTHING), she may as well be hot.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
She's like that family member that you have to see from time to time, but always makes a family get together unbearable.  No matter how much or how little you're enjoying yourself, just the sight of her makes your stomach sink, because you know that annoyance is soon to follow.

The only real difference is that at least you can change the channel when Cammy comes on (I usually don't, though, because that would require getting up and finding the remote).

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
There seems to be two basic camps on this subject - those that think that Cammy is simply horrible & those that think the concept (of a roving reporter) is terrible, regardless of who is doing it.

I think that both camps are correct.

Her shtick is awful & she's annoying.  Her routine doesn't add entertainment value to the experience of watching a game.  It detracts and distracts from the enjoyment of watching a game that is going well, and makes an unpleasant game all the more unpleasant.  I cringe when she comes on and I begin to yell uncontrollably at the TV.

However, I'm not sure that anyone else doing the same thing would add to the experience of watching a game.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
did you see cammy over the weekend with that dumbass hat on?  if she just stood there and said nothing, at least i would respect her.  i hate because she is annoying and she looks like crap and she has nothing of value to say.  but in her defense, there are only a handful of sideline reporters that have anything of value to say in general.  so make everybody happy and have her go away and get rid of the roaming reporter all together.

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
No, fortunately, I didn't have to watch Saturday's or Sunday's games on TV because I was in the stands with my Dad, brother and son (a rare treat for us because we live over 225 miles away).  We had the pleasure of being able to watch the boys break their seemingly endless loosing streak.  Especially great was the fact that we beat the dreaded Yankees, which I hate almost as much as the Dodgers...

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
When did sports broadcasts stop giving the viewer any credit whatsoever (for being a sports fan)?  The FSN broadcasts are bad, but the National broadcasts are even worse.  There can't be a moment of peace between pitches.  "Ohh, there's a ball from Mussina.  Take a look at this graphic.  It shows you that in his career, Mussina is 60% more likely to throw a strike after a ball, but so far this year, he's only 54% more likely.  And there's a strike.  This graphic shows that the Red Sox have a 33-10 record when leading by 4 runs after 3 innings in the past four years, but their record this year is 4-0.  There's a ball.  Let's go to the booth for an update on the Cardinals game."  Etc, etc.

Does this pandering actually bring in more viewers?

Re: Everybody Hates Cammy
that leads me into a topic i would have liked to have started a diary over and that was (speaking of national broadcasts) the saturday game against the yankees thom brennaman (i think he spells tom with the "h") read a comment that omar said about being traded.  omar basically said he didn't want to be traded to a team that he wouldn't start for just to win a ring.  and the dumbass announcers ripped him for being selfish.   i think omar's point was he just wants to play everyday and not sit on the bench and not contribute to the success of the team, if it were to win the championship.  i don't consider that selfish, i think that is someone who is at the end of his career  and knows it who wants to play and have fun for however long he has left.  stupid-ass national announcers.
