Dukes

Sabes should follow Kevin Towers to trade for a talented player while their stock is low.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2913605

D-Rays seem willing to let go of Dukes, and we could probably get him for pretty cheap. Maybe watching a classy veteran like Bonds will inspire him to keep his act in line. Travis Blackley (Jason Ellison) for Elijah Dukes!

Re: Dukes
I think the Gigantes could get him on the cheap and I say YES! YES! YES! Do it. Little risk and much reward in my book.

Re: Dukes
Wait , isn't Dukes the wife - beating idiot (or , more accurately , idiot wife - beating idiot)?

No. Just on general , moral , ethical principle.
One Arizona D-Blanks - caliber organization in the NL West TempestTeapot is enough...our storied franchise should exhibit more class and self respect than to stoop so low as to take on trash like that shitheap.

I'm sick. And I'm tired. And I can't take any more pain.

Re: Dukes
Did he actually beat his wife or just threaten to do so?? I think he sent her a threatening message and emailed her a picture of a gun. Who hasn't done that to the ex?? Ok, that's pretty bad, I have to admit I would have to carefully look into his background before I take a chance. But if he hasn't had any other incidents besides a messy divorce, I would take a chance with his talent. As for Bonds keeping him in line, wasn't Barry accused of the same thing by his first wife? The best part of your post was that you said Sabean "should follow Kevin Towers." I think you had it backwards though. Towers should follow Brian Sabean as the next GM of the Giants.

Re: Dukes
The one that really got me was this, where he impregnated a 17-year-old foster child staying with a relative. Classy.

I am usually up for these kinds of deals, but Dukes seems like a whole new level of asshole.  I think i'll pass.

Re: Dukes
I'm in, but only if Sabean gets Milton Bradley to join the outfield as well.

I mean, if we're going to go Cincinnati Bengals out there, let's COMMIT to it and go full bore...

Dukes' character is just too scary to take a chance on... I'd pass, more from the potential for headaches than anything else.

No, no, and no
Guys like Elijiah Dukes are always going to have their ugly personal lives overwhelming their professional careers, to the point where whatever benefit they may bring to a team on the field just isn't worth the headache. He's not going to make a difference to the Giants, anyway.

Maybe we can get Stephen Jackson to take him under his wing.  It would be nice to have those guys in the same town.

Re: Dukes
I'd take him on the cheap. Milton Bradley hasn't been in trouble for two years - admittedly he was never as bad but maybe getting Dukes away from his estranged family would be good for all parties. Besides, if he ends up in jail or something, well, we didn't have to give up much to get him, and if he doesn't we have a center fielder of the future.

Just out of curiosity...

Just wondering. My own level of sensitivity and color recognition jumped through the stratosphere when I became a parent...baby , you should have known me when...

Not for Blackley. I'm leaning toward not at all, but Blackley's actually worth something if he stays.

Re: Dukes
Ah yes.  Barry Bonds, renowned across the sport for his class, sportsmanship and quiet dignity.

Don't get me wrong, I like watching Barry play, I just don't think he's really classy.

Re: Dukes
Except for when he opens his big, high pitched mouth to the media, I think that Barry carries himself extremely well, and especially on the field. He's probably one of the classiest on field players I've seen in my time, in fact.

Re: Dukes
Count me out on Dukes. He's too emotionally unstable to make a lasting positive impact for any team, and too stupid to do anything about it. He's not exactly a superstar worth the trouble, too.

Re: Dukes
Where is the line?  Yes, this is a baseball team and not a morality convention, so we shouldn't care if a particular player is a great guy or not (although some people will).  The organization, however, is still a business, and at some point, the business must decide whether the employee is so much of a problem that it isn't worth the investment.

What would a player have to do for people not to want him?

No violent crime?  No threats of violent crime?  No domestic violence?  No threats of domestic violence?  No drugs?  No steroids?  No problems whatsoever?  No vices at all?  No vices and a love for Jesus (are you a Rockies fan)?

Basically, I don't need saints on my club, but if I would be worried about the guy living on my street, then I get worried.  And from what I have heard, I wouldn't want Elijah Dukes living on my street.

That said, does anyone have any faith that getting Dukes out of Florida and away from that environment will eliminate/alleviate the problems?

If playing a pickup game with the fellas
If we are out playing ball at the park on a Sunday and he is on your team so be it. But do you really want this guy to be wearing your company logo "San Francisco" on his chest and representing you in the community, NO.

Re: Dukes
Absolutely, positively for-f****ng-get it.

And what, Pacman Jones for the 49ers? God no, there has to be a limit. I realize that a few pro athletes need a little guidance off the field, but by "guidance" I am NOT referring to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation-----which, given his past, he's going to come in contact with at some point. No way.

Re: Dukes
I have mixed feelings about it.  But think of it this way - are his kids going to be better off or worse off if he has a ML career?

He's 22.  I don't know about you saints, but my life wasn't exactly mistake free at 22.

If he has committed crimes, prosecute him.  Otherwise - what do you really know about the guy other than what is reported in the papers?   And I think we all know about the veracity of newspapers when it comes to reporting on the habits of celebrities and pro atheletes.
