Giants interested in another Dominican prospect

According to Baseball America, the Giants, as well as the Blue Jays, Mets and Rangers, are interested in 16-year old Jose Ricardo Garcia.

I feel guilty for copy and pasting directly from the page, as it's members only, but I'll summarize it:

Garcia is a 6'2", 190 lb OF.  He's rigid in his approach, but has real raw power, and there are apparently no questions about his ability to drive the ball.  He's strong enough to hit in the Bigs right now.  He's a below average runner, but when he gets going his momentum helps him.  He doesn't have that strong of an arm, so he is a Left Fielder in the making.

There are some questions on his approach, and how he handles pitches in on the hands and solid offspeed pitches are going to be key for him when he moves on to the States.

There wasn't any information on his handedness, but I assume he's a righty in both the field and at the plate.  He sounds pretty impressive . . .speculate and discuss away, McCovenites!

Man these kids are B-I-G.

I can barely scrape 185 when I'm fat.

I have to say, though, the prospect of Villalona bating 3rd and "Jacks" Garcia batting fourth for years to come can get pretty drool worthy when we focus only on the upside.

And "Jacks" not because Jack is an American name. That's an unfortunate side effect. "Jacks" because it's my favorite word for a homerun. JACKED IT! Booya!

Don't worry.  It will come.  I was 6'1" 140 lbs when I got out of HS.  Now I am 6'3" 200 lbs.

It also helps to move to the midwest, home of giant portions.

Re: Giants in another Dominican prospect
It helps my cause that I'm 3/4ths of a whole foot shorter than you.

But the closer I get to 30, the closer I'm likely to get. That is, assuming I keep up my habit of not remotely exercising.

Get married and have a kid (if you don't already). If anything can put on weight it's marriage and fatherhood.

Having a kid and drinking more beer go hand in hand.

Re: Giants interested in another Dominican prospec
It makes some sense.  Why would the organization allow Sabean to splurge on just one big time Dominican prospect?  I think there was indeed a bit of a philosophy switch indicated by the Villalona signing-- maybe the team will be willing to shell out the big bucks for the occasional really good young hitter..

Re: Giants interested in another Dominican prospec
there should be a wide swath of latin american talents signed.  Jose Tabata? 550,000.  Some pan out, most don't, but they make for good trade bait and some become special.
this is a split signature of solidarity for Palestine and the current Giants "team".

Re: Giants interested in another Dominican prospec
I say the younger we get 'em the better! Maybe at 16 we're more likely to have time to change poor hitting habits? I don't know. But it can't hurt can it?
Or is joining the Giants organization exactly what hurts young hitters?!? I think I just epiphanated all over the place.

16 Years Old.
I'm as excited as anybody about Big V, but sending a 16 year old kid out to play ball and basically live with a bunch of adult men, many of whom are at least 5-7 years older strikes me as coming darn close to child abuse.  I really hope these big league teams that are signing these kids have given that some thought and are doing something to compensate.  From what I've read recently about the living conditions of our AA players in CT, I really have my doubts that the Giants organization is paying enough attention to be even aware of that problem.

I can't tell you how uncomfortable I am with people talking about teenagers like they're human traffic.

If I continue to be a sportswriter, and have any sort of success, my goal is to write an expose on how different countries treat their young kids in teaching them baseball...and the things they do to try and produce stars.

I love this sport, but the way the people that don't actually play it treat the people who do is truly disturbing.

Re: Giants interested in another Dominican
The counter argument of course is that the kid got over $2M and gets to play baseball for a living. I grew up in the bay area far from poverty and I still would have traded anything to have that opportunity.

$2 M
Short of a catastrophic event in his life, the $2 M would still be there at age 18.

Re: Garcia
I don't like the chances of the Giants' landing him if the Mets are involved. They have more money than us, and their GM, Omar Minaya is Dominican and loves to play the Dominican card. To a 16 year old kid about to be torn from his family, Omar would have a natural advantage. Unless the Giants have been close to this kid for a long time like they were with Villalona, I would expect the Mets to be the clear favorites.
