Fun with Numbers

Obviously, this is cherry picking - but still - I found this amusing in light of another discussion.

Pitcher A in his free agent season - 27 year old LHP: ERA+ of 139, 217 IP, 99 BB, 151K's, and 10 HR's.

Zito: 28 year old LHP: ERA+ of 116, ERA+ of 116, 221 IP, 99 BB, 151K's, and 27 HR's.

Ladies and gents, we've signed Mike Hampton.

Don't hate the player. Hate the written legal obligation to the player.

Re: Fun with Numbers
I was speaking for myself, but that motto isn't far off from how I feel about most players.

Except Pedro and Mando.

Re: Fun with Numbers
Eh, I was going for a "don't hate the player, hate the game" sort of thing, but since the game is baseball and we can't hate that, I had to do something else.

It didn't come across very well. I guess that's strike two for me over the last week.

Re: Fun with Numbers
Mike is indeed one of Barry's top 10 comps at age 28.  In fact, I believe he's in the top five.

Re: Fun with Numbers
More alarming (and stolen from the original poster on another board at that)

Zito's K/9 - 2004 to 2007: 6.89, 6.74, 6.15, 5.54
Zito's K/BB - 2004 to 2007: 2.01, 1.92, 1.53, 1.32

Can we call it a trend now?

Re: Fun with Numbers
Apparently the Giants saw those numbere and mistook  them for ERA and WHIP, leading them to believe that Barry was consistently improving.  :)

A MONSTROUS one.

Re: Fun with Numbers
Dammit, if it wasn't for this stupid deal I would almost be at peace with the current trainwreck. We came this close to making it through the winter without trading any prospects or signing any crippling longterm backloaded deals. The stage for the inevitable rebuild would have already been set.

Re: Fun with Numbers
How long do we have to watch the current Barry before he can move into the much more desirable Jamie Moyer phase of low-speed leftydom?

Re: Fun with Numbers
I understand the effect of declining peripherals, but I don't understand at all how/why Zito would be in decline.  He has not reached the age of decline, he doesn't have an injury history, he doesn't throw hard enough for a slight decline in pitch speed to matter.  What they hell accounts for loss of performance??
I wasn't nearly as alarmed about the salami (first inning, it happens) but the 2 runs in the 3rd were killer.

by allfrank on Jun 20, 2007 6:52 PM PDT reply actions

Re: Fun with Numbers
Pitchers decline earlier than position players at least physically, which could explain the loss of velocity. I actually feel the opposite about him throwing hard however - he's such a soft-tosser that even a small loss in velocity is the difference between fringe stuff and batting practice stuff. He can survive with 88, he can't with 84 and that's what we've been getting.

Re: Fun with Numbers
Isn't it possible that a decline in pitch speed is even more deadly for a soft tosser than for a hard thrower?

by Dan from NM on Jun 20, 2007 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: Fun with Numbers
It is possible the ever-reliable Zito has been overworked.  Over the past six seasons, Barry has thrown more pitches than any other pitcher aside from Livan Hernandez.

Re: Fun with Numbers
I liked the Zito signing because I viewed the Giants as contenders. They're not, and they should now be considering rebuilding. And if you're going to rebuild the Zito contract is just horrendous.

Did you just say "rebuild the Zito contract"? Because I'd love to know if the Giants have that option.

Re: Fun with Numbers
I disliked the Zito signing becauseI viewed it as a gross overpayment for a declining veteran.  That I didnt't view the Giants as legitimate contenders didn't have much impact in my decision.  I had the seven-year itch even BEFORE the contract started.  :)

The Zito Signing
I was right there with you, sharksrog. Independent of our contention-status, I didn't and don't like the deal. I'm pleased that he's a swell fellow, and donates to charities, and doesn't sulk or pop off to the press, and has a hot wife (based on the softball photo posted here some time back); but for that kind of money I'd expect Clemensesque results.  Heck, I'd even be happier if that were Cain's contract terms; at least I believe MattC has a good chance of justifying that kind of money.

I don't hate Zito, and certainly hope he turns things around.  I just don't envisage him doing enough to justify that contract.  Best case for me: we trade him.  But I doubt that happens.
