The new Billy Beane

Kevin Towers of the Padres is looking like the new Billy Beane of the NL. First he trades Adam Eaton to Texas for Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young, then he trades Josh Barfield to Cleveland for another hitting prospect in Kevin Kouzmanoff, then signs Greg Maddux, David Wells and Marcus Giles, and now he trades for disgruntled catcher Michael Barrett!

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2910079

Now Barrett may be a better fantasy catcher than real life catcher, but he still has hit 48 homers and batted .290 over the past 3 seasons, including .307 last year. He is also the hero who punched out Pierzynski. The Padres gave up their backup catcher and a minor league outfielder who was a first round compensation pick last year. That's not that expensive! The Fathers will now boast the best hitting catching duo in the league with Josh Bard and Barrett. If we could have traded Yorvit Torrealba (backup catcher at the time) and Brad Hennessey (late first round pick in 2001) to get Pierzynski we might have had a World Series title by now.

Padres win the West

Re: The new Billy Beane
Since Los Pdres were the team I grew up with, I still have a soft spot in my heart for them.  I definitely pull for them once the Giants are out of it.

That said, I'll still be rooting for the G-men in the upcoming series.

Re: The new Billy Beane
Yeah, but it seems to me like he is a reputation between pitchers is that he doesn't call a good game.  He basically fought 2 out of five on the staff.

Those 2 out of 5 didn't recommend Trident.

Re: The new Billy Beane
If you're going to compare Towers to Beane, there are much more compelling facts you could point to. I do not have any idea what I am talking about, so I will leave it to other people, but I seem to remember something about .OBP, playing to the park's strengths, "professional hitters", serious pitcher development with emphasis on strike-throwing (seems like a "duh"), etc., focus on good D, blah blah blah.

You know
More than anything else, I think this tells us we should be looking to trade with the Cubs, if at all possible. Their GM is apparently more brain-dead than our own.

Sabean should offer them Mark Sweeney for Derek Lee, straight up. You never know.

Re: You know
Angle:

Lee is obviously a troublemaker- look at the fight he started. Mark, on the other hand a) looks like a slugger, b) is a Sweeney, so he must be good (see: Mike), and c) created Giants Idol- clearly, the guy brings all kinds of lala feelgood grooviness to the clubhouse.

Re: The new Billy Beane
Yeah, Towers is one of the best guys in the business, especially when it comes to trades.

Remember how the other half of that catching platoon came to be a Padre? Towers got Doug Mirabelli from the Sox at the beginning of the season to be a backup for Mark Loretta (nothing special, and blocked by Josh Barfield). and then when the Sox couldn't find a guy to catch Tim Wakefield he traded Mirabelli back for Bard AND Cla Merideth.

Re: The new Billy Beane
Poor syntax there, I mean, he acquired Bard to be a backup in exchange for Mark Loretta.

Sandy Alderson
Alderson is the common denominater here.  He taught Billy Beane everything Beane knows.  Towers was even more worthless as a GM than Brian Sabean until Alderson arrived from the league to take over the team.  Alderson brought along his longtime scouting dirctor too.  I forget his name, but he's the guy Moneyball dumped all over for drafting Jeremy Bonderman.  Hey, look where Bonderman is now!

Re: The new Billy Beane
I think this trade is stupid.  Bard is a good hitter capable of playing every day, he just was injured the beginning of the year (now i have to drop him from my fantasy team.  And the Padres gave up 18 year old Burke, their first round pick from last year.

we'll see how good this trade is in 4 years..

Re: The new Billy Beane
For what it's worth, Burke is hitting only .200 with 1 homer in 200 ABs with a OPS of .600, so its not like he's tearing up the place. I think it's a fair value, trading a catcher for a catcher and then a prospect to make up for the fact that one catcher is significantly better than the other. Towers made a fair trade and took advantage of the situation. Sabean has been a chronic overpayer in all his trades starting with "that which shall not be named", and even likes to overpay his free agents. He has clearly lost touch with the market and how he evaluates his own talent and as a result, the Giants will now lose every single game for the rest of the season on a record 98 game losing streak
