Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade

Article from Insidebayarea.com

I never thought I needed a signature until I read this Bonds quote:

<quote>"They can trade me," Bonds said. "They can do that. I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."</quote>

And so we are.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
I love reading Bonds' quotes, they are always sprinkled with so many 'dudes' and 'mans' its like hearing a 8th grader talk.

I think Bonds realizes that he's un-tradeable. No team on earth is going to pick him up as he creeps towards Aaron's 755.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
Barry should get the 756 before the trading deadline of July 31st.  After the record Barry will be very tradable to playoff contenters in need of an impact bat.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
Combined with the way he's hitting and teams going back to walking him twice a game I don't know that he would break the record in six week's time. Of course, he could get hot and tear ass through NL pitching. I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
He's hitting .340 in June, and came within an eyelash of 2 homers on the weekend. A little upsurge isn't out of the question.  Historically he's hit pretty well in Miller Park as well, especially if the roof's closed, they seem to have a little jet stream that goes out to the RF alley.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
Even if the breaking of the record were to be delayed to August it sure won't be delayed until September and a waiver trade of Barry in August after he breaks the record should not be hard to do.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
This is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've had to listen to since my aunt and mother called my house giving out financial advice to my grandmother. My aunt and mother who regularly can't make rent because it interferes with their money to buy drugs. Telling my grandmother what to do with her money.

Personal grudges, losing face in front of the press, legal issues, whatever, it's not enough to place a player who's making a fuckload of money and can still contribute on the waiver wire in hopes you can trade him. Despite what you or anyone else thinks, the man can still hit enough to where he's valuable in the lineup. I was really meh on waiving Mando because of the chunk of money the team would be blowing by making the move. This would be exponentially worse in loss of money and yeah, we'd have a big fat hole in the lineup. No. That doesn't work.

Congratulations, you've made my head explode with the dumb. It's one thing to hate Bonds. I don't hate people who hate Bonds. I don't blame people who hate Bonds. I hate people who say completely retarded things when trying to make a point about Bonds, thus failing altogether and looking like a big asshole.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
I don't hate Barry Bonds.  In fact Barry still remains my favorite all time baseball player since he displaced the trio of Mays, McCovey, and Marichal back in 2001.

But, I do not like the way he is playing this year and the way he has allowed his persuit of the record to become more important then helping the team win.  The old Barry (the one I love) will return after the record is broken but it will be too late to help the Giants in 2007.

I want Barry traded not just because i think we will be better next year without him and with what we can get him, but, because I want him to win a ring and that is not going to happen with the Giants this year.  We can't recover from the damage Barry's approach this year in persuit of the record has already done.

He'd be a very useful player on a playoff team that actually had good complementary players (he'd be a great fit for the Twins at DH or the Tigers in LF), but I would be seriously surprised if (a) anyone actually wanted to trade for him and (b) anyone would give up players of value for him.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
when he was a free agent, no other team wanted the baggage. You think they're now going to give up something to get him?? And from the Giants' point of view, if they continue to fade, the Bonds' chase of Aaron is one of the few attractions they have to sell tickets. I hope the young Giant players turn out to be great, but right now few fans are going to pay to see them.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
Most of the baggage is gone after the record is gone.  Other teams did indeed shy away from having him break the record while with them.  But, after the record is already broken this is a non issue and all that matters is that he improves you chances of getting to and suceeding in the post season.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
I agree that the baggage would be gone, but would be surprised if any offer the Giants would receive would be better than the compensatory draft pick we'd get after the season if we keep him.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
Is that true? Is the baggage going to disappear the day after he breaks the record? I had never really considered this as a possibility. The hoards of "home run chase" media would thin, I guess, although if he were traded, the hoards of "OMG... Barry Bonds has been traded to a contender in a city where all the fans hate him!" media would be substantial.

I hope you guys are right; I just don't imagine that fans, media, and federal prosecutors are that eager to let go of their whipping boy.

I'm not necessarily saying the Giants should trade Bonds, but I'd have trouble imagining the Angels not wanting him at DH instead of Shea Hillenbrand. The big question, of course, is what they'd give up to get him for a couple of months...

More on Elijah Dukes
Sorry it's fairly off-topic, but I didn't want to open a diary just to talk about this. As if what we've heard recently about the threats wasn't enough, now the Chicago Tribune reports this...

"According to sources, the Devil Rays are open to trading troubled outfielder Elijah Dukes. The 22-year-old was back in the news last week with reports that he was facing paternity issues with a sixth child born to a fifth different woman, the latest being a teenager who told police Dukes got her pregnant during consensual sex while she was a 17-year-old foster child at the home of Dukes' step-grandmother."

Stay away from him, Sabean. Far, far, far away.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
Okay, Bonds aside (there's zero chance of a Bonds trade, really), this is the important quote from the article:

"You try to win every year, and we've certainly done that," Sabean said. "The last two years, even given our fallibility, the races were still something we could be a part of.

"But there are years, and this could be one of those years, that you have to take a step back and try to be realistic about it."

Sabean is open to a fire sale. Stop the presses. This is very encouraging, I think.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
Skaldheim, please make a diary with this money quote. I've been waiting to see a shred of evidence that a fire sale might happen. I've never believed that it couldn't- even if we don't get A-list prospects, anything is better than what we got, and each of our vets has qualities that teams will look for heading into the great chase. I don't know if this really is proof that the great "what if" will materialize, but it's put a big fat smile on my face!

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
That does seem like a very reasonable quote. I think we would have seen a fire sale last season if our collapse had occurred a week or two earlier; by all accounts Sabean was scrambling to find a good offer for Schmidt as the team started to fall apart at the deadline.

Now will he be very good at selling? I mean, the Pirates have a fire sale every July and still manage to suck the next year. Sabean's made a couple of solid low-level "Tucker for Pichardo" deals, but I have no idea what he would be able to get for the likes of Morris, Durham, Feliz, and Klesko. It would be interesting to find out.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
The Angels don't strike me as a likely buyer of Bonds; their pretty conservative, more likely to just leave the money in the account and draw interest.
The Yankees, tho, seem like a very likely target, if they can get close enough.  Te Red Sox?  Maybe, just to keep him out of NY.  I am not sure any other AL team is willing/likely to fork over the $10 mil, let alone prospect, for Barry.  If Sabean/McGowan decided to trade Barry, I don';t think they would demand/expect much in return.  They would want a bona fide, A level prospect, but the benefits would be in saving the $10 mil and giving Shierholtz and everyday opportunity.

Yankees, maybe, and he would also look pretty good in the middle of the Tigers' or Twins' lineups (though the Sheffield feud might keep him from Detroit.) But the Red Sox, unless they gave us Youkilis in return, don't really have a spot for him.

You are forgetting the desire to win now.  There are lots of examples of trades like this including our own trade of one catcher who's initials are AJ.  Surely, Barry Bonds and Matt Morris will do alot more for Seattle's playoff chances and post season chances then Sabean had any hope AJ whould do for the Giants' chances.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
These trades have happened before,  but it seems to me like they really don't happen as often as they used to anymore. I can't think of a deal in the last two years or so where a team traded two of its very best prospects for players they only had under control for 1-2 more years.

Re: Bonds open to, doesn't expect trade
It seems like it's becoming more of a buyer's market every year. A fire sale would be interesting at the very least, and it could bulk up our low minors and maybe get us a cheap and decent everyday player like Xavier Nady. Trading for a future superstar seems highly unlikely, though, when you look at the quality of propsect that has moved at the deadline the past two seasons.

I am all for a fire sale, but my expectations aren't sky high. I'd be happy if they got a few B+ prospects, cleared out some payroll, and managed to avoid something stupid like including Oliver Perez as a "throw in" in a Roberto Hernandez for Xavier Nady deal.

Acquiring young talent
I think jponry is right. I think there's been a sea change in the game, and those kinds of deals aren't happening. It would seem even Sabean has come to understand this (though a bit late for some of us) in his not trading Cain or Lincecum. This gets us back to the fundamentals: scouting and drafting your young future stars. Hopefully, the Villalona signing was a step in this direction. And that's why our recent draft was so disappointing; the times have changed, and this was our opportunity to rectify the last several years of our poor drafts in one fell swoop. If you've read Roger's post about the money that MLB is awash in, you know that we could have afforded to draft actual high-ceiling players with all our early picks. The fact that we didn't, and that the ones we did choose to spend money on were 2 HS pitchers and one HS hitter, makes me think Sabean only half-understands the new paradigm.
