Villalona Watch!

This from Kevin Goldstein in today's BP (subscription required), wrapping up his review of players who will make their professional debuts in short-season ball:

Saving the best for last, Villalona was the top talent in the Dominican last year, finally signing with the Giants for $2.1 million, or more than the team gave Tim Lincecum as the tenth overall selection in the draft. His hitting skills are remarkably advanced for a person born in 1990, and he has the size and raw power of a college slugger. The only concern is that since he's already six-foot-two and well over two hundred pounds, he'll grow off of third base, but we'll get a sense of just how far he's come since signing when he makes his pro debut in the Arizona League before his 17th birthday.

Must try to be patient and lower immediate expectations... must try to be patient and lower immediate expectations... must try to... ah, screw it! It's on!

Re: Villalona Watch!
I'm psyched, but also wary of getting ahead of myself. No way to project a kid that young with a position, a ceiling, or an ETA to the majors.

Position, ceiling, ETA
Shortstop, the moon, and two weeks from Friday. I don't know what you're talking about... that wasn't hard at all.

2 weeks?
I am set to declare him the biggest bust in Giants history if he has not displaced Feliz from 3rd base by next tuesday.

Re: Position, ceiling, ETA
Defensively, Angel will play two positions simultaneously. More amazingly, they will be opposite corners.  He has a great arm, but when he fields a grounder at first base, he will merely run the ball to the bag, since he will be playing there as well.

Needing to field only eight players, the Giants will save tons of money.  And even in the National League, they will have their own designated hitter, substituting for the eliminated position.

Re: Villalona Watch!
Hed splody AZL Giants debut wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!

The more coherent version of that would be "very good. I look forward to seeing the young man play professional baseball."

Squee!

Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not fascist: SF Dugout

Damn. I knew it was unlikely but I was holding out hope he might start in Salem. I'll be at the Volcanoes game on Sunday and was hoping I might get a sneak peak.

Your poll was funny, Pants. And who are the idiots that voted for "17"?  We all know he'll be at least 18 when he wins MVP. Sheesh, some people...

If he outgrows 3rd base, we could have an Angel in the oufield.

Hey Pants Man, Can you have another Diary again sometime where we all get to yell at you and call you names? I think that was fun last time and it really helped my overall outlook on life. Regards,

I'm too lazy to post a whipping boy diary today, Whipping Boy, but if you feel you absolutely have to, you'd probably be justified in cursing me out here...

I think being signed and developed by the Giants will have more to do with any kind of disappointment than us jinxing him.
Good news: Brian Sabean has left us in position to be in contention by the next century, at least.

Re: Villalona Watch!
Pants Man,
I think E started that "Blast Pants Man Diary" whether you know it or not. It looks like you waste your money on valuable, fun, baseball information when you should be spending it wisely on porn. Unamerican at the least.

Besides Pants Man what are you thinking even discussing a young player! This is the SF Giants for goodness sakes, get a life. Get with the system Pants Man! It's tired, old, used up players here with lots of veteran savvy. Enough of these useles Diarys about hot young players that will be traded or never have what it takes to sit next to the Ryan Klesko's and the Ray Durham's of the world.

Re: Villalona Watch!
Thanks for coming to my defense, whip, but I think e was blasting the "outgrow third base" idea rather than me.  And he may have a point... how much bigger than Troy Glaus do you have to get before you outgrow third base? Anyway, I've seen e's work; I'm quite sure I'd have some gaping wounds right now if he were actually blasting me. Although for a hopeless stat geek like myself, Baseball Prospectus is porn, so the last part of his comment just confused me.
