Trade Rumor!

Breaking!...

Rumor has it out on the tradewire that Sabean's working on a deal to bring a hitter to the team.  Apparently he's working on Lowry and Sanchez for Kirby Puckett.

I know what you're saying.  You're saying "Kirby Puckett?!, how could that be?  Kirby's dead, blind and old - in that order!"

Nonetheless, that's the rumor - I just report what I hear.  We'll see how it plays out.

BAD TASTE
Seriously, Kirby was awesome. He stuck with the same team for his whole career, had a great attitude facing adversity, and died at a tragically young age.

Shame on you.

Re: BAD TASTE
He was 66 and significantly overweight, I wouldn't consider that more tragically young than the average death.

I think he was only 46, he was born in the 1960's I think.

Re: BAD TASTE
Er, yeah, my bad with the math. I didn't get into baseball til after Puckett had been retired a while, but I still should have known that didn't sound right.

I guess 46 qualifies as tragically young then, but I still have no problem with the joke. Don't see how it hurts anybody.

Re: BAD TASTE
Eh. He also dragged a stripper through a Hooters' bathroom by her hair, so I wouldn't nominate him for sainthood either.

Re: BAD TASTE
Ah, I stand corrected, actually. It was just a random bar, not a Hooters.

And I believe she had extensions, so technically it wasn't her hair.

I apologize
Believe it or not, I actually meant no offense whatsoever to Kirby, I was going after Sabean.

I actually was a huge Kirby Puckett fan and was really sad when he died.

Bad humor.  Sorry about that.

Maybe replace Kirby Puckett with Ty Cobb.

Re: I apologize
Yeah- Ty Cobb is the only argument anybody ever needs to make in defense of Barry going into the HOF, because Cobb was probably the worst human being that has ever been famous in sports in this country, and he's in the HOF. Seriously. If Cobb gets a pass, then so should Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, and every other "controversial" superstar. The bar was set a long time ago.

Re: I apologize
At the risk of starting a huge thread... Rose (and Joe Jackson) are special cases.  They are not out because they are bad people or because they played fast and loose with the rules - but Gambling (on games he was manager!) and Throwing Games!*

Unlike steroids, that really could destroy a sport.

*Disclaimer:  I am assuming guilt here.  You want to argue they were innocent, fine.

And I don't even think gambling is in any way immoral...

Re: Trade Rumor!
That's just ridiculously offensive.

I mean, there's no way we'd go for a youngster like Kirby. Now, I hear Thurmon Munson might be able to handle third, there's a guy I'm really high on.

Kirby Memory Atonement post
I lived in Mpls from '84 to '93.  I used to go to the Metrodome (worst park in baseball - a serious crime against the game) and watch Kirby and Hrbek (buy a f-ing vowel, Kent) and Gaetti and Glavine et al.  They were a fun team to watch, but Kirby, of course was everyone's favorite.  I remember they used to play "I Feel Good" by James Brown when he came to the plate.

Kirby was impossibly stocky to be as good an outfielder as he was.  My wife and I used to talk about his "shelf butt".  It looked like you could set your beer on his butt when he was upright.  He was just a flat-out great hitter.  I think I heard that he had more hits in his first 10 years than any player in MLB history (or something like that.)  His career was only 12 years long, so it was a little unusual, but very warranted that he made the HOF.

R.I.P. Kirby, I meant no offense.

Re: Trade Rumor!
I find no offense in that at all. Good attempt at humor. If you can't laugh at dead people, who can you laugh at?

It may have been more funny if it were Timmy, Sanchez and Brian Wilson for Mike Redmond, but that's just me.

something interesting.

Re: Trade Rumor!
Oh, so the joke was that Sabean likes to sign old players!

Oh gosh, that's just so cutting and true.  How come no one's ever thought to make that kind of joke before?

You know what else would be funny?  A joke about trading young pitchers for A.J. Pierzynski.  Didn't anyone else notice how that wasn't a very good trade?

Re: Trade Rumor!
That trade was so taguchi, we're still talking about how bad it was!

I think taguchi is going to be a catch-all adjective for me from now on. Cool.

Brian Sabean signs players who are so taguchi, they walk very tenderly on their collective hips!

Man, I'm on a roll.

Re: Trade Rumor!
I will note here that a Stanford opthamologist was quoted in the San Jose Mercury saying that the use of steroids can lead to glaucoma, which, of course, is the usual eye disease that ended Puckett's career prematurely.

Doesn't mean he did it, but that bit of info is out there, in the Mercury a couple of years ago, in their 2nd page setup in the sports page.

One reason I remember this is because he's the doctor who is monitoring my wife's detached retina that was fixed up about 10-11 years ago.

Re: Trade Rumor!
That's a side effect I hadn't heard about. Along with the other stuff, man does it seem stupid to juice. I suppose it makes you rich and all, but losing your eye sight at a relatively young age would probably counter that. And I know. I'm going on 23 and have glaucoma in my left eye. It's not even really advanced at this point and already it feels like I'm wearing an eye patch all the time.
Good news: Brian Sabean has left us in position to be in contention by the next century, at least.
