Fenway Trip Advice?

So I splurged a couple of months back and bought tickets to Saturday's game up at Fenway, and even though the team is stinking it up right now, I'm ridiculously excited. I've never been to Fenway, and never hung out near the park when I've been in Boston, so I would love some advice on how to spend 3-4 hours before the game if anyone has any. On a purely practical note, my friend is driving us up and we're thinking we should park out in Newton and take the subway in rather than brave parking near Fenway. Any better ideas than that?

Re: Fenway Trip Advice?
The T (D-line) can be wild and crowded on gamedays, but it will definitely be better (and less expensive) than trying to park near Fenway. If you go down to Fenway early (3-4 hours before the game, as you said) it shouldn't be too bad, though.

As for what to do before the game... somehow, I've yet to go to a single Red Sox game in my first two school years, so I can't help you all that much on that. But the area around the park is really lively on gamedays, and there are restaurants, bars and shops all in the area, so there are definitely things to do.

Re: Fenway Trip Advice?
On the night Clemens struck out 20, I was sitting with a bunch of friends at the Pizzeria Unos in Kenmore Sq. and we were all going to the game, but somehow we kept ordering pitchers and never managed to get up and walk across the way to the stadium. It wasn't until around the 6th inning we realized history was in the making and quickly stumbled over there to grab some bleacher seats for final innings. I think I got to see about 4 of the Ks.

Re: Fenway Trip Advice?
I'm living in Boston right now (going to Sunday's game, yay!) but I'm not from here so take what I say with a grain of salt.
  1. Do NOT attempt to park near Fenway. It will suck and be super expensive. A lot of people park in Newton, or at the Riverside T stop which is the end of the D Green line.
  2. The area near Fenway has about a million huge sports bars, so if that's your scene you're set.
  3. The Boston Common is a short T ride away so if it is a nice day you can go throw a ball around or something.
Have fun!

If it's a nice day and you're up to it, the walk from Fenway/Kenmore to Boston Common is actually really nice and not horribly long. The Prudential Center is also within walking distance of the park.

Didn't we just do this for Goofus last summer? Goof, do you still have your notes?

My advice is get there early and enter the park early!  Between the little street inside the ticketed area and the mandatory "see the park from every vantage point" walk inside, you can easily spend an hour or two having fun before the game starts.

They don't allow people directly on top of the Green Monster unless they have tickets for those seats, but if you go up the centerfield side, you basically get all the way up there.

Another cool spot to check out is the bar they built on top of the roof over the right-field seats.  Good picture spot.

The area behind the outfield seats with all the food concessions is also very cool.

Fenway is a great experience; have fun!

Don't blame Ryan Klesko for this mess. (.311/.406/.479 as of 6/11/07)

Re: Fenway Trip Advice?
Once you're at your seat, my advice is to avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis. It's a great, intimate ballpark, with knowledgable, enthusiastic, deeply sarcastic fans -- but the spacing between rows was designed for early 20th century males who apparently were Napolean's height. If you're over 6 feet tall like I am, it can be very uncomfortable for a three-hour game. Make sure you get up and stretch!

Re: Fenway Trip Advice?
Yeah, you can take any of the lines to the Kenmore station, and get out there - no need to take the D line. Its a lot of fun, but parking will run 30 bucks anywhere near the park - if you're lucky enough to find it. Lots and lots of bars/food places - my favorite is Boston Beer Works, which has good grub as well.

Re: Fenway Trip Advice?
Also, being taller than 5 foot 7 is likely to be a challenge. The seats were built for slightly shorter people. ;)

Re: Fenway Trip Advice?
Thanks for all the tips. Thrombosis, LOL. I'm going to have 6 inches of tibia removed in preparation. Which isn't half as bad as it'll be for the friend I'm taking, who is a legitimate OCD case.
