Re: Apologies to the Onion....
I have to point out that the joke with Ms. Toffler has nothing to do with anything we know about Randy Messenger. Rather, she has a whole bunch of reasons to hate Messenger, but still thinks the Giants came out ahead in the trade.

Carry on.

what we do know about Messenger is that he's a big guy (6 foot 6, 250 pounds) with a bad temper. He punched out a teammate last year. (Olsen) If he starts to blame teammates for his failings, they better not argue with him!!

Best. Post. Ever.

LMAO.

Thank you Grant. BTW, is this quote real?
"I'm really happy to be going to get a fresh start, but did it have to be to a franchise that isn't committed to spending the money to put a winner on the field? And what's with having to have that lame-ass doofus Linden on my team again? And how can a Closer such as myself be expected to do anything but close? I feel mightily disrespected."

I would have been happy with this trade if we received an actual Marlin, like the one from the Old Man and the Sea.  The fact that it's someone that can actually throw a baseball at a major league level just makes me happier.  mazing post, BTW, Grant

Re: Apologies to the Onion....
My brother TM me yesterday with this "so long armando." I have to admit that many possibilities ran through my head - Bob Deniero going "The Fan" on him, Nathan's hot dog eating contest recruiting him for its Latin America leg, the gods of baseball decency striking him down with a errant bullpen toss to the head causing severe injury, etc. I never once even considered what we got, who we got, if anything.

Re: Apologies to the Onion....
I'm sort of in E's camp. I'm happy Benitez was traded for a guy who's going to be 26 in August, but on the other hand, that shiny 2.66 ERA is a total abberation, as the guy washed out as a minor league starter and then had two pretty good seasons as a minor league reliever before getting whacked around in the bigs. He's probably a left-handed Hennessey, which means he probably will make the about the same present-day contribution to winning as Benitez would have. That's decent enough, given the state of things now, but couldn't we have gotten somebody a notch better than Messenger if we'd pulled the trigger before the season? Classic case of selling low; now that everyone knows what Benitez is this year, we can't leverage any optimism.

In any event, here's hoping Sabes doesn't move the Enchanter into the closer role, and if he moves Sanchez there that he makes it clear it's only for this season. Here's also hoping that Sabes doesn't use this as an excuse to trade someone useful for Proven Closer(tm) Chad Cordero.

Re: Apologies to the Onion....
Dammit. I heard someone on the radio say he was lefty, and I didn't look for handedness on his stat pages. Of course, that pretty much rules out the Jeff Fassero career path. And kinda bolsters my point that Sabes sold low.

If the price isn't too high, Chad Cordero would be a great guy to pick up.  Yeah, he has struggled this year, but didn't his grandma die after battling cancer?

Take away his early struggles this year, and he has been excellent.

Re: Apologies to the Onion....
Hilarious.  I am not disappointed that Benitez is gone, don't get me wrong.  However, I am not jubilant today.  This trade and the modest return we got only highlights what a horrible signing it was.  I am also concerned what Sabean does next.  He is on a long cold streak.

I don't think the answers are out there for this season, and of course, he is probably on his way out.  This could end up being a scorched earth, lame duck orgy of desperation moves that we will regret.  I would rather see less movement of our value players until Sabean's future is determined.  But good trade anyway.

Sabean falls on sword, yet saves the pitchers
This team cannot be repaired from resources within, or from trading the modest roster talent that is available for July deadline dealmaking.

After he recovered from his brain aneuysm in mid-interview yesterday, Sabean said to Ralph that front line starters will not be traded, period.

That's okay by me. If Sabean loses his job this year -- yet keeps the pitching intact -- I will take care to remember him fondly.

Not a good way for Messenger to start his Giant's career, however long that may be.  I mean, think about it...how would you feel knowing that you had just been traded for Armondo?  Talk about self esteem issues....

Re: Apologies to the Onion....
And furthermore:

How is this trade different if Benitez blows that 12 inning save a little differently?  Say, no balks - just a 2-run walk-off to Delgado?  Or balks in the tying run, but gets Delgado out, and the Giants win it in 13? Lose it in 13?

And finally:

Now what am I going to do all summer?  I had like 383 hours of Benitez mocking penciled in.

I have good and bad news for you
Benitez mocking will still be the most interesting thing about this team for the next four months.

Re: Apologies to the Onion....
E and Moggee both have it right, but let me add one last bit of Niefi Perez-quality angst to this dialogue: Sabean HAS gone cold, but let's not  forget Peter McG and his stingy-ass ways three-four years ago. We'd be in a VERY different place today if we'd signed Vlad or Delgado or even Mike Lowell and Overbay. But nooooooo!. . . .

So now there's no one out there really worth trading for -- not if the guy's just a rent-a-player or a roll of the dice (ie.Melky Cabbrera, Lastings M., Carlos Gomez, et al.

Enjoy the diversion of Mondo's passing, buit it aint over till it's over and it aint over till Sept. 30th.

Have a nice day.

We still have problems.
this team (offense) is still made up of a bunch of part-time injury-prone (or inexperienced) players. As currently made up, it will never score runs consistently, i.e., score more than 3 runs per game on a regular basis. That simply won't cut it, if its going to be a division contender this year. We still need a bat. I'm willing to go with some cheap arms in the bullpen, but we NEED more offense.

This team is Sabean's team. He put it together. Getting rid of Mando helps in the clubhouse more than it does on the field. It doesn't make the team score more runs. The bullpen isn't better. Sabean has his work cut out for him to get this team on track. With the restrictions of the ownership, i.e., not permitting even one season of rebuilding/youth movement, I don't think he can get it done. Since ownership won't fire itself, Sabean is probably going down with this old ship.
