Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
ESPN/ABC conducted a poll which reveals how starkly people's opinions on Bonds fall along racial divides. For most of us, this could probably be filed under "no kidding"; but the extreme nature of the results are rather interesting. Here is the link:
One thing that is not mentioned in the article, but was brought up this morning in an "Outside the Lines" feature which focused on the poll, is that back when Aaron was chasing Ruth, apparently about 75% of Americans were rooting for Aaron. So beyond race, there is definitely a personality issue at play as well (again, file that under "no shit", but to actually quantify a perception/assumption can be an intriguing exercise). Any thoughts on the data? (sample size, locale of respondants, and other issues which always come into play when conducting a poll). And, of course, any analysis of your own?

Whether they admire or respect an individual or not, a minority race will often stick up for "one of their own" if they feel he's being treated unfairly.

From what it sounds like, they spent a good amount of time talking about that attention whore Clemens...so very typical for ESPN, no surprise there eh? Maybe they should of found the idiot Yankee fans sitting behind me and asked them what they thought of the Clemens happenings, because there wasn't a Giant's Phills game breaking out or anything.

Basically, fuck ESPN's baseball coverage. It sucks. I really wish Jon Miller didn't have to be a part of it because he is the best ever. He isn't enough to save it from itself, though.

More frustrating than anything is the fact that so many shows on "The World's Sports Leader" feed off of each other. This whole race thing was brought up by Outside the Lines, was it not? Then you've Sportscenter talking about it, and I'm sure Baseball Tonight brought it up as well. That's three right there, and we haven't even mentioned that there was an actual game being played somewhere in there.

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
What the poll doesn't take into account is that it reflects the media coverage of Bonds. Of course a lot of people are anti-Bonds, that's all they see and read from the media. If they ran 100 pro Bonds stories for each anti-Bonds story, the results would show overwhelming support for Bonds to breakt he record. These results can't exist in a vacuum.
Again, the worst thing about this whole episode is MLB's reluctance to change people's minds and promote THE FRIGGIN HOMERUN RACE! It's the biggest story of the year and they are ignoring it. They didn't ignore Ripken's ascent to Gehrig's record. they didn't ignore the chase of Maris' record. Black people see that and the Big Mac treatment and think they treat Bonds differently because he's black.
I don't think they're necessarily right, but it may be, at least, a reasonable view. I mean, a black man is about to break the all time homer record and all of a sudden roids is an issue, when it was not during the 1998 season even though everyone knew what was going on.

I wanted Jon to tell stories and talk about the kid and I'm pretty sure that's what he wanted to do too.
