Bonds' chase + Bonds' race

ESPN/ABC conducted a poll which reveals how starkly people's opinions on Bonds fall along racial divides. For most of us, this could probably be filed under "no kidding"; but the extreme nature of the results are rather interesting. Here is the link:

One thing that is not mentioned in the article, but was brought up this morning in an "Outside the Lines" feature which focused on the poll, is that back when Aaron was chasing Ruth, apparently about 75% of Americans were rooting for Aaron. So beyond race, there is definitely a personality issue at play as well (again, file that under "no shit", but to actually quantify a perception/assumption can be an intriguing exercise). Any thoughts on the data? (sample size, locale of respondants, and other issues which always come into play when conducting a poll). And, of course, any analysis of your own?

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
I think, in general, the black community feels more strongly that Barry has been singled out and is being ganged up upon by being made the poster boy for the steroids era.  I think they also see a guy who's been unwilling to do things anyway but his own and for that he's respected. (He's never kissed up to anyone.)

Whether they admire or respect an individual or not, a minority race will often stick up for "one of their own" if they feel he's being treated unfairly.

I'm suprised that only 52% are hoping he won't break the record.

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
I agree. After the constant drumbeat of negativity in the press, both in the sports section and out of it, I'd say only 52% being against him is almost a valentine to Barry.

Never Mind
If I had known the ESPN crew was going to bring this poll up every two minutes on the broadcast tonight, I never would have posted it. If you still want to weigh in with your thoughts, great...there's actually some compelling data...if you're completely over it, I don't blame you. I should have seen it coming, I s'pose.
For just pennies a day, you too can make a difference in the life of a Giants player...like Kevin Correia.

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
One figure I find compelling - 37% are rooting for him to break the record. Now I'd like to think 37% of baseball fans are Giants fans, but I'm not enough of a blind fanboy to believe it is anywhere close to that. Can we now please stop hearing how only Giants fans are cheering for Barry? I guess that is too much to ask.

I kinda expected that you, as is the case with all mad scientists seeking the inner most mysteries of life, would have some late night hours (need I say, victor, I expect you to work the graveyard shift.) Moggeee I just assumed this of as well; well, because he's Moggeee - complete with that sticky "eee" key. But I was unaware of the Baron's nocturnal talents. As I said, I'm impressed. Is it part of the noblesse oblige?

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
I felt like heckling the ESPN  camera crew I saw out by the Mays statue 2 hours before the game.  They found this guy with a Bonds jersey and asked him to stand in a certain spot so they could do an artsy pan from the back of this guy's shirt up to the statue.  Long story short, I felt like yelling at them and saying that Barry wasn't playing tonight and that they'd be wasting their time.  Not only that, but it's a team sport and there's plenty of other things to watch even if he's on the field.

From what it sounds like, they spent a good amount of time talking about that attention whore Clemens...so very typical for ESPN, no surprise there eh?  Maybe they should of found the idiot Yankee fans sitting behind me and asked them what they thought of the Clemens happenings, because there wasn't a Giant's Phills game breaking out or anything.

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
I was pleased to see that ESPN (unfortunately, using Jon Miller) had this nice big intro on the Bonds chase and then immediately Miller had to announce that Bonds wasn't playing. I bet a million people turned off their tv's right at that moment (which is too bad b/c they missed Tim's debut, but if you're the avg fan not from here or Phily, do you care that much? Probably not.)

Basically, fuck ESPN's baseball coverage. It sucks. I really wish Jon Miller didn't have to be a part of it because he is the best ever. He isn't enough to save it from itself, though.

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
What I don't understand why ESPN felt the need to hype him when they knew that he wasn't going to be playing more than a day in advance.  Could they have saved all their fancy "scientific" polls and racial commentary for a game he actually appears in, maybe?

More frustrating than anything is the fact that so many shows on "The World's Sports Leader" feed off of each other.  This whole race thing was brought up by Outside the Lines, was it not?  Then you've Sportscenter talking about it, and I'm sure Baseball Tonight brought it up as well.  That's three right there, and we haven't even mentioned that there was an actual game being played somewhere in there.

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
there is no realy news here. White people don't like Bonds and black people think Bonds is being treated differently than others (McGwire) because Bonds is black and McGwire is white. However, since race is such a hot topic these days ESPN went out and tried to create some sensationalistic news by taking a poll.

What the poll doesn't take into account is that it reflects the media coverage of Bonds. Of course a lot of people are anti-Bonds, that's all they see and read from the media. If they ran 100 pro Bonds stories for each anti-Bonds story, the results would show overwhelming support for Bonds to breakt he record. These results can't exist in a vacuum.

Again, the worst thing about this whole episode is MLB's reluctance to change people's minds and promote THE FRIGGIN HOMERUN RACE! It's the biggest story of the year and they are ignoring it. They didn't ignore Ripken's ascent to Gehrig's record. they didn't ignore the chase of Maris' record. Black people see that and the Big Mac treatment and think they treat Bonds differently because he's black.

I don't think they're necessarily right, but it may be, at least, a reasonable view. I mean, a black man is about to break the all time homer record and all of a sudden roids is an issue, when it was not during the 1998 season even though everyone knew what was going on.

Re: Bonds' chase + Bonds' race
I could tell Jon was going "Oh PLEASE" in his head but he has such grace and poise on air that he didn't show it one bit. I'm sure he gets tired of all the BS he's told to feed the masses on those broadcasts, but he has to love what he's doing to put up with it. And to put up with Joe Morgan every Sunday for six months.

I wanted Jon to tell stories and talk about the kid and I'm pretty sure that's what he wanted to do too.
