Old? - Check
Overpaid? - Check
Likely to be matched, production wise, by average AAA player? - Check

Sounds like a deal!

Re: Why Won't This DIE????
Yeah but Melvin Mora could always stat a signing duo with Melba Moore, which I always thought would be fun.

A signing duo would be cool, but what I meant was them to form a SINGING duo - Melvin Mora and Melba Moore.

They should bring in Jim Mora and then they can call themselves "Mora, Mora, Moore" and be the first ever Andrea True Connection tribute band.

On the fence????
Are you kidding me?  Now way SF is on the fence. Let's say it all together:  BUYERS. They were buyers last season, they will be buyers this season and they will be buyers next season.

I can understand SF wanting a corner IF and OF field help. A solid arm in the bullpen would be useful too.

And why doesn't Bonds pull that Bryant crap and tell SF to trade him so he can win a championship elsewhere. The brother could be a kings ransom.

Re: On the fence????
Yeah, but the key is getting "help". I don't see where Mora comes into that discussion.

Re: On the fence????
SF finished third last season, they'll finish fourth this season, and they'll finish third or fourth next season. They need to stop being buyers and start thinking about the future. I swear to god, if this team trades for Melvin Mora and bullpen help I'll only watch Tim Lincecum's starts from now until when Sabean is fired.

"When does Sabean get axed date" pool
Regular season ends September 20, 2007. World Series begins October 24,2007 and ends November 1, 2097 (at the latest). I'm going with Sabean being bounced October 12, 2007.

It certainly feels that way
especially with the WS Champ being determined in the month of November, obviously the year 2007.

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
At a glance, the only true sluggers out there that would warrant dealing Lowry (or Morris) are Dunn and Teixera (and no, I don't think Crawford is out there). I'd prefer the former, but would definitely take the latter.
What could also warrant parting with a current member of the rotation is a deal for a lesser slugger, like Ryan Church, who is still young. Do we think the Gnats would do Church and Cordero for Lowry and Benitez?

by BigO on May 31, 2007 10:45 AM PDT reply actions

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
No. Let's be realistic here. They want the world for Cordero - what possible need could they have for Benitez?

by Aadik on May 31, 2007 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
You're probably right about Cordero, mainly because so many teams need pen help. However, I don't think anyone thinks of Cordero as a top flight closer anymore (anyone know what's happened to him?) - his line looks just as bad a Benitez' does, and they are on the hook with him for another season (where they could just use Benitez to save the two or three games they'll need saving this year, and dump him). I would actually prefer Jon Rauch to Cordero, but I figured the Gnats are likely looking to dump Cordero.

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
Dunno where I got the Cordero contract. Looks like he's just on a one-year deal. Will he be a free agent?

by BigO on May 31, 2007 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
Cordero was hurt last year wasn't he?  I seem to remember he was.

In any case, a brief glance at his stats seems to show that he seems to have lost some control.  Comparing 2005 to 2006, most everything is the same except for walks and HRs he gave up.  His ERA was significantly higher, and may be a by-product of those extra walks and dingers.

He's still arbitration eligible (I think), so I don't know how that'll play into trade negotiations.

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
As a DC resident who watches quite a few Nats games, can I just say the word "slugger" really shouldn't ever be used in a sentence with Ryan Church? He's a nice little player, he's not a "lesser slugger."

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
In the original article from the Washington Post (no longer available for free) it made him out to be more of the instigator, than the short blurb does. His subsequent apology made it worse. He seemed to protest a bit too much against the anti-semite accusation, which actually made more people think that maybe he was slightly anti-Semitic. As opposed to truly looking for guidance.

Sorry. I guess I meant slugger in the relative sense of the term; using, say, Melvin Mora as a reference point.

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
Mora has hit .274/.340/.429 over the past three seasons, numbers that are helped by his solid 2005. If Mora isn't on a one-way slide (and that's a pretty big assumption), this is a realistic-to-slightly-optimistic estimate of what we could expect from him in the second half.

I'd much rather keep Sanchez, save the $7M+, and call up Justin Leone.

Exactly! Why must we acquire other teams' overpaid mediocre players when we have perfectly good underpaid mediocre players in our minor league system. Some even say that's what the minors are for.

Re: Giants interested in Melvin Mora..
I put this up about Mora on the 27th . . .guess you didn't get the memo about the TPS Reports =).

We should stay away from Mora, and Chad Cordero as well.  Mora's not worth trading for, and Cordero would command too much talent in return for a 25 year old version of Bob Wickman.  No thanks.
