Official Enchanter Debut Prediction Diary

So now that we've all heard the Good News, time to get down to business: how will Tim Lincecum do in his major league debut?  My prediction: 6 ip, 9 SO, 2 BB, 0 H, 0 R.  Only 6 innings due to pitch count limitations.

Post yours below.

Not quite as optimistic... 6 IP, 7 SO, 4 BB, 2 H, 2 R.  I mean, who ISN'T going to be nervous making their debut on ESPN?  At least he's pitching at home.

Re: Official Enchanter Debut Prediction Diary
2 IP, 1 SO (the pitcher), 8 BB, 5 H, 10 R.

Giants prospects suck. Just look at that Matt Cain guy. What a colossal disappointment.

Seriously, though, I don't think he'll be dominant. I think at best he puts up a line of 6 IP, 4 SO, 3 BB, 4 H, 4 R and gives up a couple of gopher balls along the way. But it'll be cool just to finally see him up in the bigs where he belongs.

The bright side: Brian Sabean will be out of a job in a few months.

I'm setting my standards low so as not to be disappointed. I'm also accounting for first start jitters.

Re: Official Enchanter Debut Prediction Diary
I'm kind of with you. See my projection below, which leaves him just south of a 4.50 ERA to start his MLB career, with 8 K in 6.1 IP to go with 3+ walks and a HR (given up, not hit by his highness).

Re: Official Enchanter Debut Prediction Diary
Tim will no doubt give up quite a few homers over the years, mostly on high fastballs and changes, as well as hanging curves.  But he has yet to yield one this season, and over the past four years of college and professional ball, he has given up just 15.

I have seen Tim yield only one home run in the 40 2/3 innings I have seen him pitch, although I will be the first to admit that one homer went out a lot faster than the 95 mph it came in.  Sucker came on Tim's final pitch of the first game I saw him pitch, and it was just CRUSHED.

To be honest, though, I have seen only three other balls hit hard to the outfield against Tim in the equivalent of four and a half complete games.  Tim has yielded only three extra base hits this season, and all were doubles.  One was hit very hard, another was hit hard but was in the fielder's glove before being dropped, and the last was an easy fly lost in the blinding left-field sun last Sunday.

Andrew says the sun comes through the concourse of the park, and is just brutal.  Justin Leone seemed intent mostly on not getting hit.  Can't say I blamed him.

Re: Official Enchanter Debut Prediction Diary
I agree with you, but I see about a strikeout an inning. Remember Phillip Hughes' debut a couple of weeks ago where he was hit pretty hard by the Blue Jays. He then turned around a pitched a no hitter in his next start until he was injured.

Re: Official Enchanter Debut Prediction Diary
Tim is quite capable of more than a whiff per inning, even at the major league level, but there have been times at Fresno where it appeared he was also trying (wisely) to keep his pitch count down.

That was particularly the case in his 6 1/3 inning "no-hitter."  He came within two outs of a full game no-no, since it was the first of two 7-inning games in the double header a week ago Monday night.

Tim was far from sharp, but he didn't allow a hit -- and despite having HORRID control, still averaged only 15.3 pitches per inning.

It certainly wouldn't be unreasonable to expect Tim to be nervous and possibly give up lots of walks and/or hits.  But I don't think it is unreasonable, either, that he could pitch a very nice game.

Even if he gets bombed Sunday night, I'm behind him all the way.  It's been a long while since we have seen Giants pitching talent like this -- and like Tim and Matt Cain.

Cain and Lincecum, Bonds and then some.  Unfortunately it is the "and then some" that is missing.  :)

My prediction
First of all, I was stoked at the news, because I had told my wife after the bad Ortiz start: "Watch, they'll give Ortiz a phantom injury, and have Lincecum start on Sunday." Personally, I feel that is what they did (regarding the injury).

Anyway, I'll give my inning-by-inning prediction:

1st inning: gives up 2 runs on a rally that includes walks and wildness.

2nd-5th inning: gives up 1 run on a homer, but strikes out 5, adding to the 2 strikeouts from the first inning.

6th inning: walks 2, strikes out 1, is taken out of game after 6.1 IP and 93 pitches.

Giants win 6-4. Lincecum gets his first MLB victory.

In your scenario, I think Tim either throws more than 93 pitches, or more likely, doesn't get in 6 1/3 innings.

Re: Official Enchanter Debut Prediction Diary
a phantom injury?? It was just a coincidence that when Russ Ortiz opened his hotel room door he was immediately attacked by a swarm of killer bees. This injury is legitimate and those bees could have been in anyone's room. And I also have a prediction for the all star game this year in San Francisco. NL 4 AL 0. Four solo homeruns from Bonds, and three scoreless innings apiece from Zito, Cain and Lincecum.
