ESPN and Bonds

ESPN's anti-Bonds bias is, I think (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), well-documented and well-known by the McCoven.

From Karl Ravech openly pulling for A-Rod to break the career HR mark Bonds doesn't even hold yet so that it's more "pure" (no link or video, but I saw this on "Baseball Tonight" with my own eyes), to the current asterisked cover of ESPN: The Magazine, to the plague that is the ongoing Pedro Gomez commentary, ESPN has made their feelings on Bonds crystal clear.

But this article by Wayne Drehs (currently front-paged on ESPN.com), ostensibly about the security personnel who guard Bonds during games, is the closest I think ESPN has come to actually wishing someone would take action to stop Bonds's pursuit of 755.

Okay, so maybe I'm overreacting.  But (after comparing a potential attack on Bonds to the Robert DeNiro character stalking Wesley Snipes in The Fan), did Drehs really have to include this line:

"So, as it pertains to Bonds, could life horrifically imitate art? Nobody knows."

I have mixed feelings about Bonds and the allegations and all of that, but I am increasingly annoyed with the way ESPN has covered his career, and this Drehs column goes just a bit too far as far as I'm concerned.

Someone please shoot me down if I'm way off here.

Re: ESPN and Bonds
Okay: you're way off here. The article really is about security questions, and it's even kind of interesting.

I don't think ESPN as such has any anti-Bonds bias. All they really care about is meeting their endless, voracious need for content. When in doubt, they turn to Bonds.

Fair enough.  I stand shot down.

I probably should have used my first diary entry here on something a little less tinfoil-hat-ish...

I'm a Giants fan because my dad realized at a very young age that the Phillies suck.

Re: ESPN and Bonds
I have never really felt like ESPN has been against Bonds.  They did air his Reality series.  They do regularly interupt scheduled programming to show every single at bat when he gets close to records.  I do feel, however, that ESPN is totally East Coast centric and possibly run by Yankee fans.  It was sickening when the Yankees were on national TV three times in one week, and then we have to watch Roger Clemens pitch in Scranton the next week.  Yuck.

Re: ESPN and Bonds
I'd rather watch Roger Clemens pitch in Scranton than almost any regular season game that doesn't involve the Giants, for what that's worth.

Re: ESPN and Bonds
I actually get sick of how much ESPN covers Bonds. For a few weeks when I was back at school, I made the mistake of turning on Sportscenter/Baseball Tonight to see some non-grainy Giants highlights and all they would show were every Bonds at bat and then one token play that didn't involve Bonds. It got pretty annoying, especially when it was a game where a lot happened and Bonds didn't do anything.

Re: ESPN and Bonds
I've come to the conclusion that Selig will suspend Bonds when he gets with a few homers of the record.

They are determined to stop Bonds from getting the record, and the only way to do that is to prevent him from playing at all. So the suspension will be long. The Union will back Selig. They're gonna sell out Bonds.

They'll probably cite the game of shadows story as evidence of past roids use that needs to be retroactively punished. Look for a Giambi retroactive punishment (based on his "admission") as a trial baloon for this.

Re: Bonds tells ESPN to fuck off and die
Here's hoping they have another mega WWE Bonds video package to open the game. The egg-on-face will be tremendous.
The bright side: Brian Sabean should be out of a job in a few months.

Re: ESPN and Bonds
Well, that broadcast certainly wasn't biased. Dusty sucks in the booth, but it was enjoyable overall.

Except the game, but not like that matters with this team...

Re: ESPN and Bonds
I'm actually getting annoyed with the massive coverage of Bonds on ESPN. I mean, who cares if Bonds goes 1 for 3 with a dribbler and an intentional walk, what about those awesome plays that Vizquel made or that clutch hit by Bengie?
