Rough Stretch Ahead

Rockies series at home then we're going to be in survival mode for the month of June:

3 vs. Rocks at home
3 @ NY Mets
3 @ Philly
3 @ AZ
3 vs. A's at home
3 vs. Toronto at home
3 @ Boston
3 @ Milwaukee
3 vs. Yanks at home
3 vs. San Diego at home
3 vs. AZ at home

If they can come out of this within striking distance at the All-Star break, they'll be in pretty good shape.  By the time they're home for the Yanks series, will they be buyers or sellers?

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Buyers, but that's regardless of their performance; Sabean doesn't now how to sell.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Is it possible for anyone to say anything even remotely negative about Brian Sabean here without you accusing them of bias?

I, for one, am pretty bored with that particular line.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Go back a re-read Jake's Four Part Review Diaries of Sabean's performance and you will see that I too joined in in some Sabean bashing.  But, what I refuse to do (and call others out for doing) is to assume Sabean will make a bad move before he does so or to be blind to the good moves Sabean does make and labeling them as break even moves at best.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Assuming he won't sell isn't the same as assuming bad moves. It's a long-stated policy of the management/ownership. They won't be sellers; they don't believe their fans would allow it.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
That's all well and good, but when you respond so often with "you're just biased against Sabean", eventually it just turns into noise and it makes people (well, me at least) pay less attention to whatever else you say.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Yeah, I pretty much ignore everything giantsrainman has to say and have for quite awhile. He has a rather irritating "moral certainty" that he's right about everything with no room for doubt. It just turns me off.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Two points of clarification:
  1. Having an opinion is not the same as being biased. We've all formed our opinions of Sabean by now, and sometimes (speaking for myself) that spills over into knee-jerk pessimism, but we're all happy and give him full credit when he does something we like.
  2. Disagreeing with someone is not the same as being dismissive of them. Sparks fly around here sometimes, but for the most part everyone remembers that we're all on the same side and enjoys the arguments. But if you're consistently dismissive of other people's opinions -- if you tell them that their thoughts and ideas are just delusions generated by "bias" -- they're going to start tuning you out.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Yeah, you're right, that statement is completely biased. Sabean totally knows how to sell. Like that one time when he... Wait, he didn't sell then. But there WAS that other time when he... Okay, no, he didn't sell then either. But when could he really sell? I mean, they've been making the playoffs every year since... Well, okay, maybe not, but it's not like they had proven vets with expiring contracts the last couple years. Only Alou. And Durham. And Schmidt...

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
During Sabean's regime have the Giants ever been out of it at the trade deadline? You might say that the last two years they were only in it because of the weakness of the NL west, but the fact remains that there was no reason for him to ever have been a seller. We did see him dump lesser guys like Michael Tucker and Jason Christenson after being out of it in August two years ago. And this certainly looks like another year when they are going to be in it all the way. By the way, the road trip upcoming is actually a TEN game trip, as the Giants are playing four in Philadelphia, not three.

Buyers, as usual
Especially with the All-Star game, Bonds under contract and the open mild West, Sabean & Co. will be on the look-out for another stick and possible a bullpen arm. Here's hoping Messers Sanchez, Schierholtz and EME remain in the organization.

by wilriv21 on May 24, 2007 8:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
I hope all those "messers" stay with the Giants' organization, but the fact remains that if a good young hitter who will be in the middle of this lineup for years becomes available, Sabean is going to have to go out there and give up what he has to to get him. Anyone who saw that ball that Carlos Lee hit the other night not go out, knows that free agency is not going to bring the Giants the great offensive player they need. Those type players are always going to choose the big market teams and the friendly ballparks.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Mark, what in Brian Sabean's past makes you think he could or would ever trade for a "good young hitter?"  You are assuming:
  • He knows what you mean by that phrase
  • He would recognize one when he saw one
Until he proves otherwise, I will expect Sabean to trade Billy Sadler and Sergio Romo for Emil Brown this July.

Sorry, rainman. I don't hate Sabean - but why would anyone reasonably expect a leopard to change his spots? Until said spots actually...change.

by Lyle on May 25, 2007 8:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
yeah, I agree with that. I meant theoretically of course. If a good young hitter became available, he would have to do what it takes to get him, even if it meant sacrificing guys like Sadler, Wilson, or even Schierholz. What I do disagree with is your characterization of Sabean as unchanging. This was a guy who used to purposely forfeit number one picks, and who is now stockpiling them. Of course it took him much longer to come around to this way of thinking that it should have, but at least he finally has.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
Not sure if this is the right diary to post this question, but here goes:

A lot of people on this site have advocated trading Morris/Lowry at this point for a bat. We clearly need a bat, but given how excellent our rotation is, wouldn't this hurt the organization? Seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Of course, this presumes that Morris/Lowry will continue to pitch well. I don't see why presuming that is any more valid than presuming they'll stink up the joint as soon as we decide not to trade them. Perhaps it's naive optimism, but I have this strong feeling that Morris and Lowry have both turned a corner, and that they will be above average pitchers for us the rest of the year. I may be branded a heretic, but I'd rather trade some of the young guys currently in Fresno (except for Sanchez- I think that guy has huge potential).

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
The Giants have scored the most runs in the NL West (two more then the Dodgers in one fewer game and 14 more then the Padres also in one fewer game) and lead the NL West in both Team SLG and Team OPS.  The Giants have given up the second fewest runs in the NL West (28 more then the Padres in one fewer game) but they are closing the gap fast since Lincecum replaced Ortiz in the rotation.  In total the Giants have the second largest run differential in the NL West at +21 trailing only the Padres at +35.

Bottom line, we don't yet know that we need a bat and we need to be patient to see if our pitching can't close the gap with San Diego and lead us to a NL West Championship.

Re: Rough Stretch Ahead
I agree.  The Giants probably DON'T need a bat this year.  They almost certainly need two.
