Braves looking for a 5th starter

Looks like they gave up on Mark Redman and released him.  Now the Braves are looking for a 5th starter, and you have to wonder if they'd trade for Russ Ortiz.

All the Braves young hitters I know about are not changing uni's for Russ Ortiz, so I don't know what's realistic.  But maybe something is.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
Don't think Russ is gonna get that one done, Lyle. Back to the drawing board with you...

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
I wonder what would get that done. Maybe Lowry and a minor league guy. I am not on the bandwagon of trading Lowry and Sanchez. I would say one or the other.

Is Lowry's good start enough to give him the value of a Lowry for Salty straight up?

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
I'd say Atlanta's in a little bind on this. They're clearly looking at a good shot at the National League pennant this year if they can get a third decent starter.  On the other hand, in the long run they need to make up for the impending loss of Andruw Jones' offense (come to think of it, they need to make up for that this year, too) and Salty's bat can help do that. So I would guess Schuerholz is thinking he doesn't need to make this deal unless somebody blows him away.  Probably more likely to dangle a lesser prospect (Brandon Jones?) and hope he gets lucky the way St. Louis did last year with Weaver.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
Oh, I know, Roger. I was simply pointing to someone in the Braves' organization that we'd want and that might be available (since McCann is doing well). No way two Russ Ortizs (?) is/are worth one Salty. I just wanted to start the discussion. Jarrod is a capable to excellent catcher, and could be easily converted to 1B if we needed him there more. I really hoped the Giants would draft him; I also wanted Kurt Suzuki. Maybe we'll get Canham this year.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
I have long since decided that Matt Wieters will magically drop to us in a position player repeat of last year's steal.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
Absolutely in a heartbeat.  At the risk of raising Goofus' ire I'd even toss in Klesko to clear a space for him in the lineup.

+1
Don't think the Braves would be up for it though. They would probably want a more proven starter.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
Don't make me angry...you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Klesko to the Braves would be interesting since he started there.  They'd probably welcome him back.  His final two years there is when he cut his strikouts in half and started the upward trend on his OBP.  (Pretty remarkable improvement and hope for Feliz fans, I suppose.)

Once Ryan Klesko is finished turning the Giants around he's headed to the delta to turn those stupid whales around. (307/371/466 as of 5/22/07)

Lowry for Salty would be worth it
I don't think they'd do it, but that'd be great because it would be getting a guy for the present and future.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
The Braves have been sort of digging all year for a 3 to 5 starter.  They have two solid 1-2's, but then follow it up with three 5's.  Dangling Morris or Lowry may interest them, but as I've said before, why break up whats good on this team?  Especially for someone who just started taking to 1B this year.  Is he that good of a hitting prospect?

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
In a word: yes. The Giants have Molina under contract for two years after this one, but it's easily conceivable that he'd push Molina to backup by the third.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
So from what I gather, we'd be (based on current performances) significantly weakening this team (by trading Lowry or Morris) to pick up someone who is an above average backup?  I'm all for the future, but I really like Morris/Lowry (especially currently) over Ortiz as the Giants' fifth starter.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
No, he's certainly better than a backup (I don't think he's necessarily strictly major-league ready ATM though, he's only up to be shopped) - I was saying that he'd make Molina the backup. Of course, he's also been playing first, but his real value is behind the plate IMO.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
Also, 1B is an option, which is what the Braves will probably do if they keep him.

Can't we not even trade Ortiz for like another month and a half or something like that?

Saltalamacchia is a lot of fun to say.  I don't know anything about him but it would be nice to have him around for that alone.

it'll take lowry/misch or something like that to get salty, but i think hes completely worth it.  big pop, good behind the plate, excellent guy.

Re: Braves looking for a 5th starter
I hate to rain on the parade, but either the Braves are not going to trade Saltalamacchia, or they're going to get ELITE prospects or players for him.  I think two years ago he was touted as one of the best hitting prospects in all of baseball, but then he had a poor year last season.  Here's some info on him:
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/pecota/SALTALAMA19850502A.php

I don't understand a lot of that, but I can tell that he's really good, and the Braves could get more than Lowry, Morris, or Sanchez.  I think we're over-valuing our own players.  It's fun and all, but ultimately it'd be more realistic to look at someone like Kala Ka'aihue, which is just an awesome name.  He's a first baseman with Galarraga-like power potential, although he's only in A-ball, I think.

Adopted Giant: Mark Sweeney. Yes, he's still on the team.
