The Debate

Our offense blows. Our pitching is amazing. There is a bat available. He carries with him some baggage remarkably similar to that of Bonds. Should we take it?

Re: The Debate
No.

Older player with injury concerns linked to steroids? No thanks. He can't play 1B either at this point and I don't see any use for him on the Giants.

Details
He's also making 17 million per year until 2008, when he has a 22 million player option (5 million buyout on the option).

He is 36 this year and also has a full no-trade clause.

Unless the Yankees ate a gigantic sum of money and we sent them a few scrubs (realistically they'll want much more) I would still have a hard time saying yes to a Giambi deal.

Typo
Meant to say his option kicks in 2009.

Re: Typo
And it's a club option, not a player.

We really need an edit function on our posts ^_^

Re: Details
Realistically they'll want a quality arm and a prospect or two. They are also looking into the possibility of voiding Giambi's contract, however I think a trade is more likely. The no-trade clause is the biggest "if" factor here. The Giants are perfectly accepting of older, broken-down players to play positions they're no longer able to perform at. And it would give us a second big bat in the lineup, one to either protect Barry by batting behind him, or to see some great pitches to hit by batting in front of him.

To me, if we got rid of Barry Zito for Giambi it would be so win-win, but that's just fantasy talk.

Re: Details
And furthermore it would make for big headlines, which seem to be the only types of deals the Yankees do nowadays.

Re: Details
I just don't like Giambi's chances of staying healthy enough to bat. He's 36, like I said, and has injury concerns. Tread lightly with this one.

I wonder how his bat would play at AT&T? Yankee Stadium has that really short porch and AT&T really zaps a lot of left handers power.

As for a Barry Zito for Giambi swap, that'll never happen.

Re: The Debate
At this point Giambi is a natural DH.

However, he's still a pretty good natural DH, and I think it's extremely unlikely that the Yankees will trade him or release him.  They've got nobody else who can provide his production as a DH right now.  He's also 36, with a fat contract and a history of injury problems.  Why on Earth would the Giants (or any NL team) even be interested in picking up his tab?

Even if the Yankees were sufficiently desperate for pitching that they'd take Zito for Giambi - and I think Roger Clemens would have to implode for that to happen - there's no way the Giants will trade the new Face of the Franchise barely three months into his contract.  No way at all.

Re: The Debate
He might get healthier, but at the moment, Giambi isn't healthy enough to play first base... at all. The Yankees just played a three game series at Shea and they played the immortal Josh Phelps/Doug Mientikiewicz at first all three games. Giambi was limited to pinch hitting, even though even in a down year he's about 100 times better than Phelps or Minky. Somehow I think that if Giambi was healthy enough to even play one of the three at first, they would have let him... but he's not.

Maybe he'll get healthier, but in his late-30s I wouldn't be all that optimistic about it. I wouldn't mind picking him up if I thought he could play first at least like... 3 games a week. But I honestly don't think he's even healthy enough for that at the moment. For what it would possibly take to get him, I don't think it's worth it at all, at least not for an NL team.

Re: The Debate
I don't agree that he's available.

That being said, I don't think a trade for him is at all a good idea.  Too old, too slow, too much money, and not worth the price in a trade.

Re: The Debate
I don't think the Yankees really have a desperate need for pitching anymore, with You-Know-Who about to come back.  A rotation of Wang, Clemens, Pettite, and Mussina is not too shabby, and since Hughes is going to come back in a month or a little more, they only need to fill that 5th starter spot for that long.  It's not worth it to trade Giambi for a month of a Lowry/Morris who is only going to be marginally better than DeSalvo/Clippard.

Plus I don't want Giambi.

Adopted Giant: Mark Sweeney. Yes, he's still on the team.

Re: The Debate
I like Mark Texeira alot.

Young.
Power.
Somewhat available.

Expensive..... but maybe Sabes can work out something decent for the Rangers, Such as Lowry, Misch, and EME... best i could come up with in 2 minutes.

Re: The Debate
Yeah... the Rangers will be able to get a much better return on Teixeira if they make him available.

Re: The Debate
I just see trading for Mark as a win win situation, as it would be a decently young proven power hitter with good contact for a proven lefty that is decent, a reliever with upside, and a prospect bat. Fairly equal trade.

by Giant Voodoo on May 22, 2007 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: The Debate
No, that's not really a very equal trade at all. If the Rangers decided to trade Teixeira, they could get a pretty amazing return for him... a lot better than a cost-controlled 3rd/4th starter, a LOOGY and a DH who doesn't seem to be that great of a hitter in the first place.

The Debate
NO, NO, NO!  Hell, go get Sexson or Beltre, but not Giambi.

On another note, fuck the Yankees.  Isn't it just like them to now cry foul because they were stupid enough to sign Giambi to that back-loaded contract?  I predicted them to miss the play-offs this season and am reveling in their poor play and losses.  You all watch, we're going to start seeing "leaked" reports about X and Y and attempts by those assholes to screw Giambi.  Void his contract?!?!?  (Contempt-laden comment)

On another note, I want to see more players go to the fuck NYC mold.  Go to the Yankees, the "biggest stage" and get booed for not being clutch (read: hitting a home run each AB).  Go to the Mets and get booed the first game of the season, like Beltran last year?  I know that the money's good there, but it's also more expensive to live and heavily taxed.  Ridiculous.
