Some excerpts from the official:
"As expected, the Giants optioned left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to Triple-A Fresno to clear roster room for right-hander Russ Ortiz, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list and joined the bullpen Monday."
"Manager Bruce Bochy said that Sanchez likely will pitch two or more innings of relief every two or three days to give the 24-year-old a chance to gain consistency, a regimen similar to one followed by Fresno left-hander Pat Misch."
"Bochy reiterated that although the organization still envisions Sanchez as a starter in the future, he'll likely remain a reliever this season."
Ok, question:
If the team wants him to start long term, why are they having him work out in relief now? We've got a full 'pen, and I don't see him doing any better than Kline or SA Taschner. So why prolong his reliever-dom?
The way I see things, we have 4 starters set for next season: Zito, Cain, The Enchanter, and Lowrey.
That leaves Morris, Ortiz and Sanchez as possible #5's. So the question is: Does this move indicate to anyone that Morris is more likely to be traded, moving ortiz back into the rotation this year? That, to me, is the only reason they'd keep Sanchez in the reliever role.
