Steve Kline Trivia

Check out this list, pitchers sorted by strikeout rate.  (Min 300 IP)

Steve Kline is the second-worst all-time!

Well maybe not all-time, as the database "only" goes back 5 decades.  It makes me wonder how he has been so successful (career 3.26 ERA!) even though he never strikes anyone out.  His walk and HR rates are good, but not off-the-charts like his K rate.

Some more trivia: #1 all-time is Brad Lidge, and our buddy Mando is #6.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
It's fun to see how many pitchers have a worse K-rate than Kirk Rueter.
Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

People do realize this diary is mistaken, right?
That the real Steve Kline clocks in right under Danny Haren in strikeouts per 9, at 6.66

Of course, it IS interesting
That there are two Steve Klines in the list. I suppose that alone is worth a diary.

A whole diary about Steve Kline.  groug will be somewhat pleased, or indifferent.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
I guess it is worth noting that this is a different Steve Kline, as ours doesn't have 34 complete games in his career.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
The Steve Kline on the Giants right now comes in at 6.66 K/9, between Bob Wickman and Cliff Lee.

He's Nunezesque, baby.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
When will people realize that strikeouts don't necessarily mean that the guy is a good pitcher or not?  The pitcher is paid to keep hitters off balance, so that when they do make contact, it's not a hot line drive or something hit over the fence.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
Exactly.  A pitcher with really good K rates may mean that he's a pretty good pitcher (at that time anyway), but just because a K rate is bad, it does not mean the pitcher is bad.

I don't think its that people think strikeouts is a way to judge a pitcher because it's a good way to do so.  It's one of the easiest ways.

To get a really solid idea, one would have to analyze all of the various stats available.  Some stats to take into consideration, for example, would be WHIP, BAA, BB/9, K/9, GB vs FB ratio, etc.  It's hard to quantify all of those values into one measure of how good a pitcher is.

Monster-sized package?
What does Zito's contract have to do with this?

It makes up for it if he's lacking in the...package department. But that only applies to size queens.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
I actually found it extremely interesting how serviceable almost all of the pitchers on that list have been. Granted, there are a few at the bottom with outrageous home run rates like .28 over nine innings, and to rack up 300 innings (especially as a reliever) you probably have to be at least servieceable, but it's still very interesting to see all these guys at the bottom of the list putting up decent career lines.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
K-rate certainly isn't the only thing... but it is one factor. And it is really hard for a pitcher to succeed in the majors if he can't strike out, say, more than four batters per nine innings.

At the same time, I think it's important to look at everything like sfgfan said. A pitcher can survive with a low strikeout rate if he keeps his walks down and can get lots of groundballs, for example.

So yeah, it's not everything, but I do think it's pretty important.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
The thing about making weak contact is that almost all major-league pitchers seem to do that bout equally well - with a few exceptions on both ends of the spectrum most guys give up roughly the same number of hits on balls in play - the way you keep BAA down is by avoiding balls being put in play at all: with strikeouts.

Re: Steve Kline Trivia
A pitcher doesn't have to have high K rates to be an effective major-league pitcher.  The only way that a guy with a really low K rate can consistently live in the majors, though, is if he walks significantly fewer people than he strikes out.  Like Chien-Ming Wang.  Or Carlos Silva, until he started walking guys.  Remember Nate Cornejo?  That is usually how it turns out when you have very low K rates, especially when your K rate is lower than your BB rate.  A little luck, and then BLAM!  You suck.

Except Kirk Rueter.  But remember the rule:  There can be only one (Kirk Rueter).

Really, Rueter had a consistently low BABIP, and it happened every year (his 2002 was the really low outlier).  So he was really tricky with a skill for inducing weak contact.  But that is very rare, and Rueter wasn't really that good (although he was damn lucky in 2002).  He also was magic.  You know, because of the lucky shamrock.

Way way too nerdy, and not that funny either
Sabermetricians who calculate ERA+ don't use a leaguewide ERA.  They just use Steve Kline's.
