I was going to wait until Steve S posted his minor lines thread to post this but I cant wait. Ive been a fan of this guy for the last couple years, ever since I saw him make an unbelievable diving catch in CF in Spring Training and Ive always wondered why people aren't higher on him. Given, I know there are a lot of red flags about him, little HR or XBH pop, low walk rate. However there seems to be so much more to like about him, he plays hard, Ive heard reports that he could be a Gold Glover right now if he started in the majors, high primary avg.
Today Timpner led off for the grizzlies and went 3-4 with an RBI and 2 BBs. For the season he is hitting:
.446/.483/.482 with 4 sb 2 cs 24 H 2 XBH
There has to be value in a guy who hits for a high average (albeit singles) and play steller defense. He was a 4th round pick after a great college career at Central Florida so its not like he's come out of obscurity...And his name is Clay Timpner...it just sounds like a baseball name.
Here are my questions,
1)Why cant this guy be a productive CF at the ML level?
2)Can he steal a bag? he stole 43 in his last year of college ball and 34 at San Jose in '03 but since then he hasn't been good at all at stealing a bag. Has he lost his speed or is it something teachable, like he's just not good at getting jumps and reading pitchers?
3)Why does no one seem to be high on this guy but me? (that might just be another way of asking question 1.
Someone please explain this to me, Thanks!
