Schizophrenic over Benitez

On the eve of the McCovey Holy Season...

I'm lighting a candle and praying for Benitez tonight, whether it's to continue his outrageous luck or his outrageous command of the voodoo that helped him collect outs like they were bottle caps this spring.

Count me as one who has not been in this guy's corner, despite the late returns. After sucking it up and repeatedly trying to defend Armando for two seasons, I just gave up the effort by August of last year. Too much evidence stacked up against him, and I jettisoned my optimism and allegiance. I couldn't take it no mo'.

I send my respects to youse guys who still can.

But I will make this concession: As much as a fit Bonds, the Giants desperately need a strong Benitez performance to stay in the race. And because I love local laundry to the last stitch, I cannot actively root against the galoot. He's wearing my favorite colors, fer crissakes, even if sometimes it looks more like two uniforms than one.

I'll cheer for Benitez in a roundabout fashion, because much more than Armando is at stake. At the top of my Giants Wish Heap, I desire that the Giants stay in contention so Barry's comeback season -- in which he passes Aaron with ease -- will have the utmost dramatic meaning.

But...Benitez. I sense that on April 3 the stone reality sets in for Benitez because of the tough, professional, break-your-heart major league hitters who are stacked against a closer in the ninth inning of games THAT COUNT.

Man, that inning -- that final, desperate ninth -- is a tough assignment to pitch through. And it is one facet of regular season baseball that just does not have a true parallel in the sleepy Cactus games. I can't trust the results from Scottsdale, boys.

So I am taking a deep breath, lighting the taper, and intoning:

Go, Blow!

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
I also tried to defend Benitez really hard the first two years, but lost patience. But I will say... I'm willing to give him another chance. I would like nothing more than to have him put up a dominant year as a closer. But if we're in May and it's the same crap... blown saves, poor peripherals, poor attitude, I'm done with him for good.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
The Giants have little choice at this point but to rely on Armando.  The guy the Giants were hoping would become the closer was sent to the minors for poor spring performance.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
Who is this Mando you speak of?  I once knew a Mando, but vowed to erase the memory after he egged on us fans, his teammates, and members of the media.  I'm done with him and have been done with him for a long time now.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
I have a hard time believing that the 89mph heaters and hanging breaking balls he was getting people out with during ST are different than the ones he was blowing saves with last year.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
I'm with this.  I didn't see anything about his pitching this spring that would lead me to believe he's improved one iota over the wretched pitcher he was last year, and his personality flaws are as evident as ever.  He'll get his share of saves due to luck, but with stuff like he's shown over Spring, it won't be long until last year's cycle starts to repeat itself - blown saves, followed by lame excuses.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
You make good points. I'm kind of hoping he was saving his best fastball for the regular season and will come out today throwing 93-95 mph. If not, it's going to be a tough season. He can strike out kids on those pitches of his that drop out of the strike zone, but hitters like Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzalez are going to lay off those pitches. In fact, if I were the manager and those guys were coming up in the ninth inning, I would go with one of my three lefties.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
Why the F do 30 teams get to play on opening day, but the Giants and our opponents have to wait an extra day?
We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
So we don't have to share an opening day with the stupid Dodgers.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
I'd rather them not play on the same day as them. Less chance of catching an std.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
I'm rooting for Mando because I have no choice.  I just wish he hadn't been such an a-hole last season.  It would be much easier to pull for him this year if his probablems were merely physical.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
I'm willing to wipe the slate clean and forget about his previous adventures in the closer role as it is a new season. After all, that's pretty much all any of us can hope for. That and to sell more Mando t-shirts.

Oh yeah, I guess I promised to buy a shirt if he's on the opening day roster.  Will do it this week.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
So it's agreed then? After all the yelling and screaming and endless debate, we've uh, decided to forgive and forget, and get on with a new season of baseball. It's for the best. It takes a big msg board to look forward and give a $7 million Closer another chance.

Getting all teary eyed here...

Forgive and forget?  I'm not saying I'm that generous.  But I am willing to give him another chance and will applaud his efforts if he does well.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
I feel your pain, but wishing the worst for Mando is, in turn, wishing the worst for the Giants.  Like it or nor, the current team is depending on him.

My love for the Giants supercedes any and all ill feelings toward Mando.

Let's hope the decision to keep Mando doesn't blow up in our feces.

Re: Schizophrenic over Benitez
Well, who knows?  If he sucks massive ass early on, maybe he'll be traded so he can't blow really important saves as the season winds on.  That may actually be better for the Giants...

Man, this generic Armando Hate is disappointing.
I thought I'd get Rainman or Frank or someone in here to sing for Armando. This is too one-sided.

I may have to switch sides on this thing.

I'd just like to thank whoever advised me to dump Ian "1/4 1R 1RBI 1HR yesterday" Kinsler for our Giant Choad of a closer.
