Jason Schmidt on DL
Hey all. First timer from Ohio. I'm on here because of my interest in Lincecum (have him in two fantasy leagues). Anyway here's some breaking news I thought Giants fans might enjoy.
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-hander Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with shoulder inflammation. The move was retroactive to Sunday.
Schmidt had an MRI Monday in Phoenix and there is no timeframe for his return. The team is going to give him a few days off to see if the irritation subsides.
"We are going to give it a few days to let it calm down. Hopefully it's just a short term thing," Dodgers manager Grady Little said.

Re: Jason Schmidt on DL
Regarding Schmidt, if there's one thing the Dodgers have, it's lots of starting pitching. I'm guessing they're going to plug Hendrickson in there, which probably makes them worse than if they put Kuo or Billingsley in, so I'm not complaining. But now that their rotation has Tomko and Hendrickson, it's really not that imposing at all.

Re: Jason Schmidt on DL
Certainly this latest news impacts Schmidy's ability to outperform Barry this season. And Barry DID pitch was was EASILY his best outing of the season.
All I can say is let's wait and see how it turns out. As I have long said, the more that is known, the more likely it is to work out for me.
I will say THIS: It is amazing to me that Jason could strike out more than a batter per inning with his arm in this bad a shape. With regard to the impact of the injury on Jason's ability to outpitch Barry with regard to the length and cost of their respective contracts, a lot will depend on how long it takes Jason to recover and the degree of his recovery.
Am I as confident that Jason would outpitch Barry as I was before the injury? No. On the other hand, it explains at least part of why Jason was giving up so many runs.
Believe it or not, even with this latest news I would still prefer that the Giants had re-signed Jason instead of Barry. For one thing, Tim would likely be being called up now. But even more importantly, after three years the Giants would be out from under Jason's contract. In Barry's case, they'll still have four more years to go -- and not likely the four most productive years of the contract.

So yes, definitely a fake injury.

Re: Jason Schmidt on DL
You say that Jason will probably spend the time off trying to reinvent himself as sa finesse pitcher. If he's smart, he will do rest and rehab in hopes that his shoulder will heal to the point where at least a considerable portion of his velocity comes back.
Mark, you should know better than to talk about a "fake" injury. As you know, last summer our good friend Randy called Mike Matheny's injury a "sham injury." He has never really apologize for that remark, but it certainly wasn't one his wisest, most accurate or more sensitive ones.
Oh, yeah. He also told us not to worry about Noah Lowry's injury a year ago. And now a year later we're STILL worrying a bit about it.

My personal philosophy is that when arm problems begin, it is usually best to react quickly before they escalate.
Incidentally, I know you don't like Dusty Baker's managing. I think the strongest case against Dusty is that late in 2003 he allowed both Kerry Wood and Mark Prior to rack up consistently high pitch counts. Neither has been nearly the same since.
