Open Link thread 4/10

"Open Link" because all I've got are two dumb things not worth their own diaries.  Well, one, maybe.

Mark Sweeney is coming off the DL soon, which means crunch time:  Do you DFA Sweeney or Niekro?  (Or go with some insane proposal like dumping Vizquel, putting Aurilia at SS, building a death ray to conquer the world, etc etc.)

(Oh yeah, and the link has something else about Bonds wanting to get 3,000 hits.  He might be joking, who knows.)

In lesser news, Yamid Haad has a job again.  (Scroll down.  It's not exactly headline news.)

Re: Open Link thread 4/10
I'd just DFA Sweeney. Klesko is a 100x better version of him and Niekro, as much as I think he's not very good, can at least mash lefties.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Re: Open Link thread 4/10
Sweeney is redundant baseball-wise. Funny dude, but funny don't score runs, compadres.

Someone will need to take over Giants Idol next year.

Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not fascist: SF Dugout

Re: Open Link thread 4/10
Reliz Feliz, of course. Failing that, I'd send Frandsen or Sanchez down and hope that Bochy can figure out this whole new-fangled "pinch-hitting" thing.

Re: Open Link thread 4/10
To expand: If Klesko's going to be a starter (and surely that's just a matter of time), we need Niekro as his platoon partner and Sweeney as our top lefty pinch-hitter.

Against RHPs, then, the bench would be:
Sweeney from the left
Niekro, Aurilia/Feliz, and Alfonzo from the right
Linden, a switch-hitter.

Against LHPs:
Klesko and Sweeney from the left
Aurilia/Feliz and Alfonzo from the right
Linden

Seems pretty well-balanced, though it would be nice to have a pinch-runner/defense OF replacement type.

Re: Open Link thread 4/10
Assuming Evan doesn't get his wish (and ours), I'd release Sweeney. Unless the rumors about Klesko constantly having to ice his shoulder are true.
Proud papa to Sergio Romo; and looking forward to adopting Josh Vitters!

Lyle, where did you hear that?  It's the first I've heard of it.

Carry 11 pitchers
and add Sweeney to the bench. SF is short LHH on bench - especially when Klesko starts.  Six relievers is plenty - especially when you demand that your starters go deeper into games.

Re: Open Link thread 4/10
Sweeney isn't worthless.  He could be traded for some C prospect or AAA insurance reliever.

Even if Klesko does start, as he should, with Niekro as platoon partner and Aurilia at 3rd, Linden is available to hit lefty off the bench.

Although I like wilriv's idea of having six relievers.  If Kline isn't going anywhere, then send down Agent Jack or Sanchez, especially as Sanchez can be a starter in Fresno.  Or just unload Hennessey.  He isn't good.

Sweeney answer
Just for the record, in case someone looks up this thread months later:  The Giants' answer was:

Keep Sweeney AND Niekro... and demote Frandsen to AAA.  His middle-infield utility can be filled by Aurilia if need be.  Actually seems obvious in hindsight.

Thanks for playing, everyone!
