Oh, this is not good.
From RotoWorld.com
Ryan Klesko is expected to miss the next week with a strained muscle in his left side.A healthy Klesko is the Giants' best option as a first baseman against right-handers, but it's anyone's guess whether he'll be 100 percent at any point during the season. As a result, Rich Aurilia seems like a safe bet to get at least 400 and maybe 500 at-bats.

Re: Oh, this is not good.
Wonderful. So what, realistically, has to happen to this infield for Feliz to rack up 600 ABs? I mean, Murphy's law here, but it already doesn't seem all that far off to me with just Klesko gone.

Re: Oh, this is not good.
I don't know. I like Frandsen as much as the next guy, but I don't see him hitting .285/.325, especially with enough power to hold off a Feliz hitting anywhere in the .260-.270/.300 range.
But that's not what I was asking to begin with. Question was: What has to happen to this team for Feliz to rack up 600 ABs (let's say 580-620, for some leeway)? I didn't ask "why won't Feliz be starting every day this year" because, yeah, we've been over that question.
Now, mine is a bit of a more pointless question I know, but the idea of Klesko hurt got me thinking that we're not as far off as we might have thought from Feliz starting every day, and I want to know what those circumstances are.
So: I'm wondering this. Say, Klesko busts. That leaves Aurilia and Sweeney at first, no (and Aurilia can play third, so that works out a bit, but how well does that platoon work anyway... I don't know)? And, assuming DL, does Niekro get a callup and would it even matter (he played third, and he's got a little power, so he's kind of like the beta version for Klesko... even so, I don't see Niek taking ABs from Feliz)? Then, there's utility Frandsen. He can't cover Feliz every day because he's got Durham and Vizquel to spell. And since Feliz plays short and second, too, well he could get middle IF ABs hypothetically as well. But if Frandsen's here, how well does he have to play to keep PF on the bench?
I'm just wondering here. Even some of our optimistic crew have Feliz getting well over 500 ABs with a healthy Klesko, so how far do we have to dig for that to get in the 580-620 range?
Yeah, it's a hypothetical, but we know the state of our infield (Klesko and Durham = hope they stay off the DL, Sweeney is just there, Vizquel can't play every day - or rather, really really shouldn't - and Aurilia has to magically not regress to the serious multi-year slump he maybe came out of last year), so I just want to know about the possibility.

Re: Oh, this is not good.
If he hits 280, he'll get 550 - 600 ABs. 270 and he'll get 450 - 500. If he hits 260, he'll get 350 - 400 ABs.
There are a few reasons for this: last year, there were no options. Feliz was the guy, come hell or high water (which, as we all know, both came). This year there are not one, but two options: Aurelia and Frandsen. Bochy has demonstrated he is a) not afraid to play young guys (Green, Barfield) and, while he will go with a veteran and give hbim time to find his stroke, he's not afraid of cutting him loose (V Castilla, last year).

Re: Oh, this is not good.
On the other hand, I would prefer Pedro at .250/.310/.485/.795 to Kevin at .310/.350/.420/.770 because Pedro is by far the better fielder at the hot corner.
The problem, of course, is that Pedro isn't likely to put up an OPS that good if he hits only .250 -- and Kevin isn't likely to hit .310 in 450 at bats.

Re: Oh, this is not good.
So, hopefully, the injury isn't too bad, and the time off is a precaution.
