Misery...according to ESPN

So ESPN put together a list of the fan bases in sports that have suffered the most over the years. They've put the Giants at 16th overall, which is good (or bad?) for second in baseball behind the Houston Astros.

uh yeah, who knew that signing the best player EVER would not produce a championship. We got real close and it wasn't his fault we didn't. It was Dusty's.
We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

I think it was more referring to the PR nightmare that's been caused since then.

Re: Misery...according to ESPN
It's funny. These guys are always going to point to Bonds as our big goat, but it just isn't accurate. The guy had the best World Series anyone ever had when the pitching staff let everyone down.

Silly me for thinking they'd actually listen to Giants fans.

Re: Misery...according to ESPN
as much as I hated Dusty as a manager, I didn't blame him for that game six debacle. That was all on F.Rod as far as I'm concerned. Glad to see him released today. Hope I never have to hear his name again.

Re: Misery...according to ESPN
I agree with you rx.  At the time I thought Russ was beginning to implode and we had the best "Final 3" in our bullpen that we've ever had.  Although, maybe Dusty shouldn't have shown up the Angel bench and given Ortiz the ball.  Bad time to give your opponent extra motivation.

Just think, if Nen gets out of the 8th with a lead, how in the hell does he pitch the bottom of the 9th??  His arm was hanging by a thread.

oh, no-- Dusty carries most burden
As I never tire of pointing out, WE SHOULD HAVE WON GAME 2!  We had that damn thing won, and I said to lots of people in the living room at the moment that Dusty did whatever it was he did (I can't remember, sorry), that we were going to lose and it was the fault of this move Dusty was making. We lost.  If we had won Game 2 AS WE SHOULD HAVE, it's over in 5 and we don't even GET to Game 6.

And hell yes, I will blame Dusty for Game 6.  You're cruising along, doing fine, but 7 outs is not insignificant... your pitcher is doing fine, and you KNOW that your bullpen could be good or could be fragile... so why the hell pull your good horse?  And THEN do a dickhead showboat move like give the departing pitcher the ball so that the other team gets pissed off?

I will always blame Dusty for pulling Russ prematurely.  And for screwing up Game 2.  And the pretentious wristbands.

Angels fly because they take Brian Sabean lightly.

El Mayorino, I couldn't read past your first sentence. Why must we revisit such painful agony?

All I remember about 2002 was that the World Series was canceled. Nothing else. Don't remind me otherwise.

Re: oh, no-- Dusty carries most burden
I couldn't remember what Dusty did either, and after looking up the box score on retrosheet I still can't figure it out.  That was the game where Ortiz sucked and got pulled in the 2nd inning. The Giants led 9-7 at one point, but that was in the 5th, which hardly seems like having the game won.

Then again, maybe I just dreamed the whole thing. Cancelled, you say?

Re: Misery...according to ESPN
Felix Rodriguez, Tim Worrell and Robb Nen each failed in that horribly ironic game.  Ironic because I can't remember even TWO of the three failing in the same game that season, let alone all three.

During the regular season Nen was the "worst" of the three in yielding hits, giving up "only" 9 2/3 fewer hits than innings pitched.  Worrell yielded 17 fewer hits than innings pitched, and Hernandez gave up 16 fewer.  The trio gave up only 172 hits in 214 2/3 innings, or just 7.21 per nine innings.

I grew up a Padre fan, am now a Giants fan and have always been a Charger fan.  It's a wonder I don't buy puppies just to kick around the house.

I've never suffered rooting for any of the teams I favor.  Every minute has been wonderful, even if wonderful in an agonizing manner.

This is pretty cute.

Can you remember 1992? Baseball had four divisions. Bobby Bonilla was the highest-paid player at $6.1 million. Jack McDowell had 13 complete games. Only two players hit more than 35 home runs (Mark McGwire, Juan Gonzalez). Barry Bonds led the majors in OPS, and Roger Clemens led the AL in ERA (OK, some things don't change).
