It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter

We all new it was coming. Since the average ERA for a 5th starter in this league is over a 6.00 I think this can work out for us.

It's better than Tomko.....

'Gratz to Russ. Sounds like the hard work over the winter has paid off. Here's hoping to a Comeback Player of the Year award for him.

Anyone know if the Giants are immediately settling into the Zito/Cain/Morris/Lowry/Ortiz rotation next week? Since I have tickets to Thursday night's game, I'd prefer to see Cain pitch rather than Morris, but it sounds like I'm SOL.

Re: It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter
I'm very happy for Russ too, but it'l be rough for him to win the comeback award.  We're already clearing space on our mantle in anticipation of Ryan winning it.

(Just think how obnoxious I'll be if Klesko actually does do well this year.)

you can't handle the truth or Ryan Klesko!

For a second, I thought you meant Ryan Jensen.

I thought he meant Nolan Ryan. Now that would be The Comeback of the Year.

For a minute I thought you were talking about Armando Benitez. (Armando rhymes with Klesko en espanol)

Comeback player of the year?? Armando has that locked up. Klesko and Ortiz are playing for second.

Re: It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter
In all seriousness, it's not too hard to imagine all three of those guys bouncing back and having good seasons.  If Russ, Armando and Ryan are really competing for comeback player of the year, I'd say that would being going pretty darn well well for the Giants.

Re: It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter
The thing I like about the Giants, which the national media does not get at all, (and most fans) is that all of these guys do not have to have big years for the Giants to do well. If Klesko is done, it's irrelevant, because guys like Aurilia and Niekro can hold the fort at first base. If Ortiz reverts to his form of the last two years, Tim Lincecum is waiting at Fresno. I'm not sure if we have an alternative if Armando stinks it up, but Bruce Bochy has a reputation of being able to think of something. And if guys like Klesko and Ortiz DO have big years, watch out. I can just hear the national media idiots now, "Duh, I picked the Giants for last, but I DID say that anyone could win that division, so I was kind of right, wasn't I??"

You are SOL. Zito, Cain, and then Morris will start against the Padres.

I would rather watch Blowmeatiz pitch than Morris. I would rather have teeth extracted without benefit of novacaine than watch Morris pitch.

Watching Morris pitch is like watching a housekeeper change the sheets in a whorehouse.

Re: It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter
Hmmm... they're actually set up nicely to go Zito-Ortiz-Cain-Morris-Lowry and keep everyone on schedule and on full rest, assuming Lowry pitches to minor leaguers or has a lengthy bullpen session on Monday. No, I don't think Ortiz is a #2 starter (although damned if Lowry hasn't been pitching like a #5 lately), but the order they're lined up doesn't make much difference to me, as long as they're all fully rested (but not too rested) when the season starts.

Of course, with Lowry as a #5 you have your two lefties back-to-back, which freaks some people out, but I don't know if it's really a big deal, because... ah, who am I kidding? I don't care about any of this nonsense... I'm just killing time until Tuesday.

Play ball, already!

Re: It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter
If he stinks, Lincecum.  If he puts up a 4.50 ERA, then welcome back Russ!

Either way, I am happy.

Re: It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter
Noah Lowry is the one looking over his shoulder at Tim Lincecum right now. What a spring Lowry has had. He's lucky he signed that long term deal last year, because instead of working on Lowry's release point, they would be working on his release!!

I think Lowry earned himself a fair amount of leash with his first two seasons.

Re: It's Official: Ortiz 5th starter
Maybe 2005, but last year was pretty lousy. You certainly don't lose your job based on spring training, but I would think the leash wouldn't be that long.

Spring training stats are useless.
Let's give Lowry at least till June to prove himself. Remember how Cain started last year... and spring training stats are pretty much useless.

Lowry is basically a .500 pitcher, and I predicnt an ERA of 4.20. On the plus side, he can toss 200 innings, and for his career has allowed less hits than innings pitched. But Noah is really nothing more than a #4 or #5 pitcher. Unlike Morris, at least Lowry is getting paid like a back-of-the-rotation pitcher.

Imagine Lincecum emerging, and Lowry moving to the pen as primary lefty, or even closer. Interesting. Switching leagues might also benefit Lowry, but I'm hoping he sticks with the Giants and can win around 13 games this year.

The slate wipes clean at the beginning of the regular season.

Defender of Noah Lowry.

Interview with Sabean from this morning if anyone is interested.  As usual, nothing earth shattering. He talked about Ortiz, Benitez, how they felt Brian Wilson would be farther along, the Niekro, Ellison, Sweeney battle, and other things that I can't remember off the top of my head.
