Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor

Whether or not the Giants can afford to trade Benetiz is definitely a matter for discussion, but ESPN's Rumor Central recently posted this trade rumor:

M's do their homework on Benitez
Mar 21 - The Mariners had a scout assigned to watch Giants reliever Armando Benitez almost exclusively for the past week, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Seattle reportedly might offer Ben Broussard and ask the Giants to eat some of Benitez's contract.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants may make a decision on whether to trade or keep Benitez by early next week.

My view: Broussard's pop would fit in well with our lineup, though it would spell the end for Sweeney and take ABs from Aurilia and Klesko.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
I forgot to mention: Broussard can play right & left field as well, making him, at least positionally, more valuable than Sweeney or Ellison.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
The last thing the Giants need is another mediocre 1B.  Yes he does have some pop (.465 career slugging) but his OBP isn't great and it's really not worth getting rid of our best reliever for a duplicate of what we already have.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
4 spring training innings doesn't prove he's our best reliever.  The man had a 1.57 WHIP last year with a .353 batting average against.  He may be stronger this year but arthritis doesn't exactly disappear as you get older.

However, I agree with you that we don't need another mediocre 1B.  He is, however, the best name I've heard yet in return for Benetiz and it wasn't so long ago that people were advocating DFA.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the bullpen is more of a concern for the Giants right now than 1B.  I'm all for getting a respectable player in return for Benitez, but at the same time I'd like to hold out for someone more helpful, either now or in the future, than Broussard.

To me, it comes down to the chance that Benitez has a good season and helps the Giants win vs. the chance that Broussard is significantly better than Aurelia/Klesko and helps the Giants win more than those two.  Personally, I'm leaning towards Benitez, at this point.  I think he's worth the risk.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
You are most likely right.  I just think it's ironic that two weeks ago nobody would've even believed a report like this one.

Just FYI Benetiz just gave up his first ER of the season on two singles.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
I read Benitez and ER, and immdeiately thought you were talking about the emergency room.

Just goes to show how I think of our esteemed closer.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
He tried to jump over the foul line on his way to the dugout and his legs literally fell off at the knees.

In all seriousness he gave up 3 singles, a stolen base (not much Molina could've done) and 1 ER.

Shoulda traded lardo last week
Like I said: His value was at its peak with his last scoreless outing -- Sabean should have struck.

From here on out, Meat's trade value spirals to nothingness, then his knees cave, and it's the DL.

Keeping this guy just to watch him collapse in the regular season gives the Giants nothing.

Re: Shoulda traded lardo last week
None, Zero, Nada of the three hits off Benitez today where hit hard they all just had eyes and somehow found holes.  Benitez was throwing his sinker almost exclusively today like he threw his slider almost exclusively his last outing and his fastball the outing before.  From here on out we can expect Benitez to mix up all three and even be more effective.

Re: Shoulda traded lardo last week
You have the choice of keeping Benitez and hoping he has a good year, or trading him for nothing AND eating his contract. I think it has to be the former by default. As you guys perfectly put it, the last thing we need is another mediocre first baseman. I have hopes for guys like Chulk, Correia, Wilson and Sanchez this year, but they have done nothing this spring to convince the Giants that they can afford to trade their closer.

Re: best reliever?
I guess I shouldn't have tried to slide that by.  But to be fair, it's not like anyone in the bullpen is that great, so in some hypothetical universe Benitez could be the best reliever on the team.

So somebody actually watched Benitez for a week? Wow that's rough man. With or without the aid of alcohol?

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
It would force the team's hand on Niekro and Sweeney.

I think I made the joke before about the Giants forming a band with Zito and Broussard on guitar and Omar on drums. The trade would cover the rock music requirements.

I really want to get into this recent Rumor Mill market.  There's some serious money to be made here.

I mean how hard can it be to continually fling my own poo onto a wall just to see what sticks.

Latest rumor has Blowmeatiz going to CNN for Larry King in a two-way salary dump. The trade is conditional on King producing a pulse for 24 uninterrupted hours; something he has been rumored to be working on in the off-season.

Re: Check Out This Benetiz Trade rumor
Nah...even flinging poo is above Larry.  He just interviews it.

As a side note, is it just me, or are people as interested in Donny Deutsch as I am.  That guy has some great interviews to his credit.  Not anything like Charlie Rose, but still, really good.

How good is Broussard in RF?  (Assuming this happens)  If Winn starts to have another year like last year Broussard could start in RF do a platoon of some sort.
