Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .

"Bonds was on deck when Rangers reliever Eric Gagne, making his first Major League appearance since last June, ended the fifth inning. Most onlookers anticipated a renewal of the Bonds-Gagne matchups that enlivened Giants-Dodgers games of recent vintage, but such wasn't the case.

"It's too early in the spring to face him," said Gagne, who's trying to overcome elbow and back injuries. "You see what he did in his last at-bat? I don't need to face him. I've got enough to work on."

April 16th, 2002. Quite possibly the best at bat I have ever seen. . . That was just phenominal. I think I cry every time I see it. . .

Bonds turned around his 101 mph fastballs. He knows what Bonds will do to his 89 mph meatballs.
We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

Our Best vs Your Best .
"April 16th, 2002. Quite possibly the best at bat I have ever seen. . . That was just phenomenal. I think I cry every time I see it. . ."

A great NFL matchup lasts 8 seconds. An AB for the ages can last minutes. Rock meet Hard Place. Immovable Object Meet Irristable Force. Ali meet Frazier. And it doesn't matter where you are in the standings.

Save Matt Morris. Save The Pitchers. Save The World.

Meh
My brother and I were at the game and question, and he too dubbed it an at bat for the ages.  What people fail to remember is that we were down two w/no men on.  There was nothing on the line.  Feliz flied out shortly thereafter and we lost.

Yours truly,

Aguafiesta

Sometimes, a single moment...
...transcends the game in which it was played.  (The game was actually in '04, not '02, by the way, but we all knew which one was meant....)
The set-up wasn't quite as GameSix remembers it, though a Giants loss did result; the actual game situation is part of what made it so memorable -- but the historical context played an even greater role.  Gagne had thrown 22+ consecutive scoreless innings coming in, the Giants were getting shut out three nothing, and the game was just over.  Jeffrey Hammonds drew a walk, but Grissom flew out, and with anyone but Bonds at the plate, there would have been no life in the park and no hope.  And then the battle, and then the drive, way out to center field, and suddenly Gagne's streak was smashed, and the Dodgers' shutout with it, and suddenly the Giants were in a one run ballgame, with two outs still to live.  Okay, they didn't pull it out, but in that moment, with the perrenial MVP facing off against the reigning Cy Young winner, it didn't matter that the next two batters would make their outs and end the game.  The age-old rivalry was focused for the length of that at-bat on our hero and their Beast ... and the hero won.
(Thanks to Baseball-Reference for the specific game information, and Some Random CNN/SI article for the tip on the Gagne streak.)
Ever hopeful for all our rising stars, like Tim and Cain ... and David B. Flemming!

Re: Sometimes, a single moment...
Ah yeah I forgot about the scoreless stuff...thanks for picking me up!  However, for me the "meh" still stands.  Of course Gagne was pumping in fastballs; he had nothing to lose, and it would've been detrimental to him to put the tying run on for free.  Twas no battle!

Re: Sometimes, a single moment...
I mean it was great, you couldn't script it any better. I haven't seen it in a month, but there's a first pitch fastball right over the plate, letting bonds know it was on. Then there's a high 90's on the inside corner, bonds swings and misses, couldn't catch up to it, gagne made bonds look silly. Then there's an 0-2 paint on the outside corner, painted, I mean painted, any other day it would be a strike. The ump implicitly lets gagne know he's not getting off that easy. A 100mph+ drilled 500 feet foul. Gagne's not backing off. Bonds has got the timing down. The next pitch. . . . .

"Hits it Hiiiigh. . . .Hits it deeeeeeep. . . its outta here!"

I loved my life that night. . .I could care less that they lost. I saw greatness.

For WilltheThrill, this is Jon Miller saying goodnight. . . .

Re: Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .
In fairness, he is trying to recover from major injuries. I'd call it being realistic and a mountain of respect for Bonds's ability as a hitter.

In this morning's SF Chron he referred to Bonds as the best ever.  He also mentioned that the Giants showed interest in him during the off-season.  Man, I'd never be able to get used to seeing him in a SF uni.

Biggest mankinder in the history of no brain. I adopted Klesko; guess that makes me his "padre".

Re: Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .
Its Frenchy we're talking about here. Fairness has nothing to do with it. No consorting with Orcs, past, present, future; living or deceased. Frenchy is merely attemting to escape years long captivity in the land of DeNile. Acknowledging that Barry Lamar Bonds is the best ever requires no courage, no decencey, no great intellect. It simply requires acceptance of life on earth the way it exists. Something even a retarded Rottweiler is capable of. Which by the way is where Frenchy belongs on the scale of evolution.
Save Matt Morris. Save The Pitchers. Save The World.

Early? Sun is setting on Spring Training
Note that Gagne said it's "too early in spring."

Yo, FrenchFry, get your shredded elbow ready. Camps break in a week.

Give Sabean a pat on the ass. Nice non-sign, saving $6 million.

Franny's quote about being a Dodger hater was brilliance. Good man, Franny. Good man.
Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not fascist: SF Dugout

Likewise, if Lowry doesn't turn it around this season, I might start calling him out his Dodger fan roots.

Re: Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .
Thing is, Noah and Tomko are good friends. Tomko has taken Lowry under his wing during the past couple of  offseasons to teach him conditioning.

Thanks a lot Bombko...apparently the pupil has learned his lessons well.

Re: Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .
I like to think that you can't teach crazy. And that there, that's Tomko's defining characteristic. Lowry hasn't followed that path... not by instruction, anyway. You'll see.

You'll all see.

Re: Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .
Oh... or you were actually talking about the great shape that Lowry gets himself into. I hear he works hard enough in the offseason that his body requires 6000 calories a day just to maintain.

Sorry if you were coming out in optimism toward Lowry... I just see Tomko and expect pessimism.

If I was right the first time, though, refer to that comment.
