Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .
"Bonds was on deck when Rangers reliever Eric Gagne, making his first Major League appearance since last June, ended the fifth inning. Most onlookers anticipated a renewal of the Bonds-Gagne matchups that enlivened Giants-Dodgers games of recent vintage, but such wasn't the case.
"It's too early in the spring to face him," said Gagne, who's trying to overcome elbow and back injuries. "You see what he did in his last at-bat? I don't need to face him. I've got enough to work on."
April 16th, 2002. Quite possibly the best at bat I have ever seen. . . That was just phenominal. I think I cry every time I see it. . .

Our Best vs Your Best .
A great NFL matchup lasts 8 seconds. An AB for the ages can last minutes. Rock meet Hard Place. Immovable Object Meet Irristable Force. Ali meet Frazier. And it doesn't matter where you are in the standings.

Sometimes, a single moment...
The set-up wasn't quite as GameSix remembers it, though a Giants loss did result; the actual game situation is part of what made it so memorable -- but the historical context played an even greater role. Gagne had thrown 22+ consecutive scoreless innings coming in, the Giants were getting shut out three nothing, and the game was just over. Jeffrey Hammonds drew a walk, but Grissom flew out, and with anyone but Bonds at the plate, there would have been no life in the park and no hope. And then the battle, and then the drive, way out to center field, and suddenly Gagne's streak was smashed, and the Dodgers' shutout with it, and suddenly the Giants were in a one run ballgame, with two outs still to live. Okay, they didn't pull it out, but in that moment, with the perrenial MVP facing off against the reigning Cy Young winner, it didn't matter that the next two batters would make their outs and end the game. The age-old rivalry was focused for the length of that at-bat on our hero and their Beast ... and the hero won.
(Thanks to Baseball-Reference for the specific game information, and Some Random CNN/SI article for the tip on the Gagne streak.)

I loved my life that night. . .I could care less that they lost. I saw greatness.

Re: Spoken Like a True Dodger. . . .
In this morning's SF Chron he referred to Bonds as the best ever. He also mentioned that the Giants showed interest in him during the off-season. Man, I'd never be able to get used to seeing him in a SF uni.

Early? Sun is setting on Spring Training
Yo, FrenchFry, get your shredded elbow ready. Camps break in a week.
Give Sabean a pat on the ass. Nice non-sign, saving $6 million.

Sorry if you were coming out in optimism toward Lowry... I just see Tomko and expect pessimism.
If I was right the first time, though, refer to that comment.
