Spring Training

I just returned from my first ever trip to Phoenix for spring training and wanted to share my thoughts on the experience.

Number one: It was AWESOME.

Ok, with that out of the way, here's some details: I stayed in a hotel about a 15 minute drive from the stadium. The stadium is quite nice. Pretty, well designed, easy to get around. Decent concessions although my dad complained over the lack of vegetarian options. Beer just as expensive as ever. For Saturday's game I was sitting on the grassy hill behind the left field fence. The atmosphere out there was very, very chill. The fans seemed to know the players pretty well based on what I overheard from people.

The quality of play on the field was ok. The intensity seemed a bit off, but that is to be expected. Zito started and was up in the zone pretty consistently, didn't seem to be getting a lot of break on his curveball. At the plate Linden looked great, I really hope we get that guy some ABs this year. I was watching through binoculars when Bonds hit his homerun. Man, that swing is pretty. I had no doubt it was gone just from watching the swing. By the time I took my eyes off the binocs to try to pick up the ball it was over the fence.

One amusing thing was when about 30 guys in full Dodger gear slowly walked all the way from one side of the stadium to the other along a walkway that splits the upper and lower parts of the stands. They got a lot of crap from fans and seemed to be loving the attention. Guy next to me said they do it practically every game. Those losers need to buy some tickets to Florida already.

Yesterday I went to see the split squad game at the A's stadium (sadly missing the Enchanter by doing so). Phoenix municipal isn't as nice as the scottsdale park, but is ok. It is actually interesting how the two parks mirror the ones out here. Scottsdale stadium is right next to downtown scottsdale, sorta integrated into the community like Mays field is. Phoenix municipal is more like the coliseum with a big parking lot next to it and no neighbourhood feel.

The Giants didn't send any of their starters down for that game except for Feliz (oh joy), but Linden played center and again looked impressive at the plate. Unlike the 13-9 contest I watched on Saturday this one felt like a real game with a 3-2 final score. Hennessy looked good starting, the guys that followed so-so.

Beyond the games I also had a fun time. Checked out some art in Scottsdale (reminded me a bit of Carmel... how the hell do all those galleries manage to stay open?), ate some good mexican, and drove over to Casino Arizona Sat night for some blackjack (only about 15 min from downtown scottsdale for those of u who gamble.)

So it was a fun trip and I highly reccomend that anyone who can figure out the means to get down there does so. I'm already planning for next year!

Re: Spring Training
Sounds like you had a great time, Spring Training is always a joy for me.

The Dodger fans that show up, are probably the same ones that have shown up the past two years. If it's the people I'm thinking about, I'm sure they cannot afford tickets to Florida. Two years ago I shouted that they should get back to selling oranges on the corner, and one guy took offense to it.

I've never enjoyed games at Phoenix Municipal, but I think it fits the A's just right.

If anyone reading this wants a ticket to tomorrows game at night vs the A's and happens to be in the area let me know. My friend was supposed to go, but he never requested the time off for work. So I'm charging him anyways, and if anyone wants it just let me know. stretfordend@gmail.com

Re: Spring Training
Hey, that sounds great.

I'm actually going to spring training for the first time next week, though just for a day. It'll be the first big league game for my 9-year-old son.

We have tickets for the lawn, as that was all that was available. How is out there? Should we get there early? Any advice? Is batting practice open to the public?

I think my wife and son are going to get sick of me talking about it soon.

Re: Spring Training
Lawn was nice. Pretty crowded. Grass isn't too thick so bring cushions (chairs not allowed). Park opened at 11am for a 1pm game, got to see only about 5 minutes of batting practice.

Re: Spring Training
Did you guys hit the guy with the giant wok? He fried up some amazing noodles and veggies last year, a huge carton of the stuff for like $5.

My friend and colleague took that photo while we were waiting for our fried noodle dish.

I got a smoothie (and got lei'd) and my sometimes vegetarian tastes were quite satisfied.

That's him all right. We went to the World Baseball Classic and spring training last year. We used to work together at a defunct sports website when I wrote A's content.

...hush. I had to get started somewhere.

Hey now, as I recall, you two still work on a website together, just not always at the same times.  :)

Not bad Baron...not bad at all.  The fried noodle thing...is it like Mongolian grill kinda sorta?  Looks damn good, that's for sure.

A fried noodle thingy, smoothie, and getting lei'd...that's quite the day!

Re: Spring Training
It was Mongolian-ish and they had chopsticks so I was happier than a pig in...well, you know. I got an orange lei to match the orange on my jersey and I met a cool elderly couple from Novato in the bleachers that day. The gentleman was very impressed that I had my scorecard that day.

Re: Spring Training
I witnessed the wok, and in fact suggested it as an option for my pops. Alas, he declined.

I, meanwhile, was scarfing up nachos.

Re: Spring Training
Your dad missed the best vegetarian-friendly food in the Cactus League by passing up the wok guy.

They do something called the Southwestern Bento at Peoria; basically it's a poor man's ChaCha Bowl. The salsa is rather bland and the chicken is not jerk chicken. You can opt for teriyaki sauce instead of salsa with the Bento. They have decent pizza there too.

HoHoKam Park in Mesa has almost nothing for people who don't eat a lot of meat. I was relegated to pretzel and water there.

LEMONADE LEMONADE LIKE GRANDMA MADE
Oh and speaking of Scottsdale, I could hear the lemonade guy on the radio this weekend. We about died when we met that guy last year. He is freaking awesome and a story unto himself.

That might be as close to a Grease reference as I've ever seen on this site.

Unless anybody can think of one that came before it, congratulations for first times, hornet.

Re: LEMONADE LEMONADE LIKE GRANDMA MADE
There's a particular lemonade vendor at Scottsdale Stadium. You'll know him when you see him and more importantly, when you hear him. He yells "LEMONADE LEMONADE LIKE GRANDMA MADE" and when you call his attention to buy one he points to you and yells, "YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT"

He's awesome. And the blue lemonade on those warm sunny days=A+.

Re: LEMONADE LEMONADE LIKE GRANDMA MADE
Yea...unfortunately, he can't reach where I've been to sell to me.  I've thought about trying to get his attention through the press box window, but I think the regular beat writers would respect me even less (if they could).
