The last thing we need is another so-so first baseman. Between Aurilla, Klesko, Neikro and Pedro we are full up.

Youkilis is no world-beater, but he's certainly better than those four options. Worlds better than Pedro or Niekro.

Throw Niekro in the deal if the Sox ask.  Isn't he out of options, anyway?

A Klesko/Youkilis platoon would be sweet and allow Richie to be the full-time 3rd baseman.

I don't know, I think the Red Sox are pretty good at judging talent.  Aren't they a moneyball/peripherals disciple?  If they are interested, I would think that is some indication they think the past 2 years have been injury related.

Well there's some uncertainity on whose running things. But yes, Theo Epstein was a Billy Beane understudy, whose approach is somewhat misunderstood by some.  Valuation of certain player apptitudes in the marketplace vs one's competition valuation for similar apptitudes. Some are statistical, some are traditional physical evaluations. All are weighed on a budgetary scale. Thats as brief a synopsis as I can come up with.

We should throw in Matt Morris.
he's probably the most expensive 4th starter in all of baseball.

And then I read this quote:

"Going to the minors is more realistic at this point," he said.

After Lincecum struck out four batters and surrendered two singles, mostly baffling the Mariners with his 95-mph fastball, curve and splitter, manager Bruce Bochy all but confirmed it.

"We're staying open-minded," he said. "But to be honest, it's a long shot for him to be on this club. If he's not here, there's a good chance he'll be starting in (Triple-A) Fresno. We'll go with who we think our best arms are. Mostly, he hasn't pitched a lot in professional ball."

So Bruce, which is it, the "best arms" or the guys who have pitched the most in professional ball? You know who's pitched a lot in professional ball? Matt Morris. Is he better than Lincecum? if he is, he certainly hasn't pitched like it spring training.

Today's Morris line against a legit Cubs lineup: 2 ip, 8 hits, 7 runs, 4 er, 1 bb, 1 k. His ST era in 6.2 innings: 16.20. I know it's spring traning and that's a small sample size, but c'mon. As you can see, we're going with the best arms, even if they're falling off.

We'd be pretty good if we didn't suck so bad.

by nostocksjustbonds on Mar 12, 2007 2:32 PM PDT reply actions

Re: We should throw in Matt Morris.
As tempting as it is, I like Lincecum at least starting in AAA and notch a few more professional innings.  You then have the ability to call in the calvary with a call up if Morris doesn't straighten things out in his first three or four starts.

As bad as Morris has looked, they need to give him a chance to try and work it out.  He might be the most expenive #4 starter in the league, but he'd be the most expenisve long reliever in history if they have to move him to the bullpen.

Morris sucks big green rocks and blows big brown chunks. He is horrible, terrible, brutal, old, injured, washed up, and he looks even worse than El Mando.

Both of these suckbag loserfreeks from Musuem World Hell need to be shown the elevator shaft. Strap them to an Al Qaeda suitcase nuke. Get them the hell out of here before we do a deja vu all over again.  I would rather chance sucking with the new guys than be assured of being average with Morris and Blowmeat.
