Longevity indicates someone doing a job well, and for Miller, that also entails being truthful despite a club's difficult times, telling fans what's happening on the field and off without being the ultimate "homer."

He is very much a homer, and all the better for it.

I beg to differ..
He may root for the Giants sure, but that does not detract at all from his calling.  He does not call routine plays for the Giants like they were amazing efforts and downplay the amazing efforts of the other team (as some other Bay Area team's announcers do).  He will call out badly performing Giants as well.  See: The Benitez Skirmish.
Here's to a good 2007. Or 2008. Or 2009. Or 2010. Or...

What are you talking about?  Benitez got Miller's (Millers')(Millers's)(Muellers's) player of the game several times after the skirmish.  giggle

Absolutely right, Walrus. You characterized a homer broadcaster perfectly: overstates his team's successes and understates the other team's successes.  I would add another facet: there's a difference between a broadcaster's rooting for his own team because HE wants them to win and feels part of that team, versus a guy who might convey that he would like the team to win because he understands that most of his listeners want that and he is relating to them.  

Jon Miller is in that latter category: the prime reason we can feel he wants the Giants to do well is because we listeners want it, but I don't think he personally cares either way.  I think he is such a great broadcaster and teller of the baseball story that it doesn't matter if the Giants win-- it's still a great, rich tapestry of a story.

Love Giants; get heart and mind fried by Giants; repeat.

He should do his impressions more often, he's great at them. When the Giants are kicking the Dodgers' asses, I would love to hear him do the game in his Scully voice!!
