OT: Official MCC writing group?

Seeing as a number of us are into writing, I thought maybe we'd like to form a writing group where we'd share and critique each other's works. I'd like to gauge the possible interest first before laying the infrastructure (I'm thinking a Yahoo! Group or somesuch) -- who's in like Flynn?

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
I was originally thinking fiction, probably of the short variety, but if enough people are willing to share and critique poetry, non-fic, journalistic pieces, etc., then I don't see any reason to rule those out.
This world you take to be 'the' world will die, and descend into Hell, and all history after that will belong properly to the history of Hell.

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
Also, assuming we get enough interested parties, are there any other ideas for a host/communication medium besides Yahoo groups?

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
I did this with my cousin a while back. She set up a password protected web site on typepad, and we all submitted every few weeks. We've since stopped.

I am a huge fan of this idea... the only problem is I might end up being a flake on submitting stuff. I do a lot of writing for work and for fun, and I'm not sure if I'd have the time to do more. But I'd love to be involved and read some of the stuff that goes up.

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
A password-protected blog could be set up on WordPress or Blogger. Maybe we can end up publishing a weekly newsletter, or the like.

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
Sounds like a great idea, hope I'm not too late. I'd mostly just be submiting journalistic pieces (if one can call them that).

OK, I'm just going to set an arbitrary goal of 15 people before I'll call this thing a reality. (Subject to me ignoring it completely if we miss the mark.)

Well then, let me recommend this diary to try to get it back into the public consciousness.

No big swing, Howie lays down a bunt for the team
Makes perfect sense.

I see by the lineup you are the No. 2 hitter.

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
Man, I want to, but I'm not sure I have the available commitment/concentration. Mainly I want to read everything. I'm attempting to write a magazine article about reading all those baseball books. Maybe that counts.

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
Excellent! Forget about that quota business above (besides, quotas are illegal), I think we can move onto the mechanics of the thing.

At the moment, the hosting options are:

  • Yahoo! Groups
  • Wordpress
  • Blogger
  • Typepad
  • Livejournal (continuing the blog tip)

Someone will have to clue me in on how to make this work on a blog, since I'm more used to uploading files onto a Y!G and sharing that way. I guess that people'd post their pieces as a blog post -- do we need to worry about word count  limits? And I suppose readers would make critiques in the comments section?

El Person -- tell me more about this newsletter idea! E.g. what's the content, who's the audience?

More general question: Would people post whenever they have something they want to share? Or should we set up some kinda schedule, like, a couple people per week? In this second case, I think that'd help the authors get the attention they'd deserve -- but then again, a schedule might not fit w/ some people's free/leisure time, and I don't want to turn this into too much of a class if people aren't down with that. THEN AGAIN then again, I know I'm more productive when I have a deadline, however nominal it is.

Anyway, feel free to kick around ideas!

Count me in...
...unless I'm too late, or people are worried I'll pick too many pointless little nits. (I'll restrain myself, really!)
I like the idea of scheduling a couple of people per week; we could arrange for more flexibility by establishing a waiting list for those who want to submit pieces early, and if someone's turn comes up and they don't feel ready to submit something, they could give up their turn to (or switch turns with) the next person on the waiting list.

Re: Count me in...
Don't worry, you're in -- and whoever wants in can get in, there isn't going to be any deadline to join. I'm not updating the list anymore is all.

Well, it might be a compendium of the best Giants-related blog posts from the past week/month, with some original content. The audience would be anyone interested in the Giants, I guess.

Re: OT: Official MCC writing group?
I don't have much of a preference for forum or for how we organize it. Deadlines are good, but can also be a problem for people.

I figure we'll probably end up with a system a little different from what we start with anyway, just as problems get ironed out.

But however we're starting, just let us know and I'm ready to go with this.

I'm most familiar with yahoo! and LJ, if that helps the decision along, but I'm willing to learn any of the others if we go to those.
